Peat, barbecue smoke and a dry earthy bite lead here — the Islay whisky finish takes over almost completely. Underneath sit yellow fruit, light caramel, orange and soft spice, but several tasters felt the smoke "emporte tout" and left little room for New Grove's usual fruit. One reviewer also found it dialed down a touch too far in strength.

#4955 Whisky Live in Paris 27.09.2024-30.09.2024. Another great event meeting a lot of RumX new and old friends. This year three weren't as many new releases as in 2023, but I still had a great time. Nose Light wood, faint caramel, light smoke, faint peat, light citrus, light orange, faint chocolate. Palate Round, light wood, faint smoke, light peat, light earthy, spice, light orange, light salty. Finish Medium to long, light wood, light peat, faint smoke, light salty, fruits, spice.

Qu’attendre d’un rhum avec une finition en fût de whisky écossais bien lourd ? Eh bah des notes de whisky évidemment qui ne passe absolument pas en fraude au nez. Le côté terreux, tourbé, fumé et même soufré nous plonge direct dans le bain. Les agrumes, le caramel et les épices douces subsistent encore, ce qui en fait un nez plutôt agréable et si unidimensionnel que cela. Le whisky arrive directement en bouche avec une attaque sèche, terreuse et tourbée qui n’est pas sans rappeler le terroir écossais. Malgré tout, les épices et les notes fruitées réussissent à produire un mélange cohérent et pas si déséquilibré que cela (contrairement à la version finie en Rozelieures). L’alcool est pas trop mal intégré, même si le whisky le fait ressortir. On pouvait clairement s’attendre à pire pour cette cuvée. La finale est longue, sèche et très concentrée sur les arômes fumés, épicés, salés et tourbés. Si la facette du rhum s’est effacée, le produit reste assez caractéristique et intense en fin de bouche. Si ce n’est pas le plus abouti des rhums ayant eu ce type de finition, tant de la gamme de New Grove qu’en général, cela reste un spiritueux qui ravira les amateurs du genre, à mi-chemin entre le whisky et le rhum.

Tasted at RhumFest Paris 2025 after the 2008 and the Rozelieure finish. And in my opinion it's the least successful. I like peated whisky but here it takes over everything and leaves little room for the usually so pleasant fruits of New Grove. A shame.

Nez assez doux sur le caramel leger, les fruits jaunes, le café torrefié et une fumée assez épaisse. Puis vient la peche. La bouche confirme le nez, fruits jaunes, caramel et fumée. Le finish est bien présent, mais pas trop. Ce qui me dérange, c est cette réduction trop importante. Dommage, cela aura pu etre bien plus intéressant. La peche ressort bien, une fois le verre vide.
