That's the whole story of this Enmore: a lovely single-still Demerara held back by the 40% reduction. Well I was very exited to try those single still releases… this is exactly what I would hope for DDL released on a larger scale (and hopefully at a half reasonable price). All three show the common characteristics you would expect and love about DDL‘s stills. No need for blended in the barrel / finishes / obscure leftover casks. Unfortunately, the reduction to 40% ABV is basically a crime against humanity 🙈 While the noses are surprisingly intense, on the palate all three releases are way to thin to deliver the profile competently. Nevertheless all seem in a good place after 12 years of tropical aging and as there are also limited higher ABV bottles available there is a chance for genuinely amazing OB release from DDL in the future. Fingers crossed.

Quick taste at the Rhumfest. Once again, I have trouble understanding the El Dorado "policy". It sells for twice the price of 15ans. Basically, it's very close to Enmore 96 but reduced to 40% (sawdust, molasses). It's perfect for discovering a simple still without increasing the alcohol content, but the price isn't quite right. And for the enthusiast who wants the typical Enmore product, the price won't get in the way, but the rum clearly lacks intensity... In short, it's a good rum that's easy to access, but if you're not a Guyana specialist, you'll take a 15-year-old without hesitation to indulge yourself at a nice price, and if you're a hard-core enthusiast, you'll have to pass on it because you'll be missing something.

Today, a comparison of three El Dorado from 2009. Port Mourant RX13844, Enmore RX13123, and Versailles RX14577. Unfortunately, all are reduced to 40%, otherwise something very good could have emerged. Personally a bit too thin for me. Otherwise quite successful bottlings for entering the El Dorado universe, although I would prefer the El Dorado 12, 15, or 21 here.

Delicious nose with lots of vanilla, caramel and crème notes, nice wood as well as coconut, pepper, citrus, chocolate. Not overly intense but really very good after 13 tropical years. On the palate, unfortunately - as expected at 40% - very thin and watered down. Still with the same flavors but unfortunately disturbingly and irreducibly thin. Really very tasty on the nose ... would certainly have been a hit as a >55% version and, in my opinion, more appropriate for the target group of single still / single mark enthusiasts.

Could have been a nice bottling but the dilution here is so badly chosen that there simply isn't much of the aroma left. The viscosity is extremely watery and thin, but thanks to the enmore profile there is at least enough aroma behind it to assert itself, but overall it is rather disappointing, especially at this price. I don't understand what El dorado was thinking here....

Light version of the US version with 54.3%? The parallels are at least clearly present, even if there is a league between them in terms of quality. Unfortunately, this release seems a bit too sweet, to the detriment of complexity. The maple syrup caramel note is pleasant to drink, but slays the profile. Wood, dark spices, although with level, but apart from that just relatively flat.

Nose Wood, light roated, light varnish, light coffee, herbs, faint caramel, banana. Palate Oily, fresh, wood, light glue, banana, light citrus, faint mint, light tobacco, clove, faint chocolate. Finish Medium to long, wood, dried fruit, clove, light chocolate, faint herbs. Empty glass Vanilla, chocolate, faint caramel, light orange, faint smoke, light coffee.

Compared to the other Single Stills, surprisingly similar to Versailles. Nicely rounded but not spectacular. On the nose a delicious date note, on the palate too thin, but the finish quite long, primarily from the cask.

Edit: I'm raising the rating by one point, giving it a 7 because the rum remains pleasant, but the gap between quality and price is enormous. Today, I'm testing the three single stills from El Dorado in their 40% versions. On the nose, this Enmore presents notes of caramel, a very light woodiness, and, almost imperceptibly, I have toasted almonds. On the nose, this is my least favorite of the three; it's very classic and not particularly interesting. On the palate, I have caramel, vanilla, and toasted almonds in the background, but discreetly. Not much is happening here. The finish is short, with somewhat basic hints of wood (but light), tobacco, and a bit of orange zest, which is quite surprising. For me, the conclusion is clear: no. At this price, it's all the more scandalous to offer something so simplistic, I'll pass.

Not bad at all. Ok it's only 40% abv but for me it doesn't always need to be cask strenght 🤷♂️ This is very easy to drink. I'm mostly getting a woody profile and caramel flavors 👌 maybe even a hint of coffee in tge background.

Much more earthy than the Versailles and Port Mourant of the series. And also the best for me. Tobacco, leather. Pleasant woodiness. Not bad even if too reduced and sweet.

This is a tasty DDL from the Enmore still. It is big on the caramel notes that we know from DDL. It is a fairly sweet (but not sugary) profile. There is barrel influence to keep things in check but overall the caramel and vanilla notes dominate for me. There is some green pepper in the background that nicely balances out the sweetness.

40% does not suit Enmore... Enmore - a drive distillery, now just a functional distillation device. Probably the only wooden distillation device in the world that enjoys great popularity. Enmore rums have flavors of ash, leather, heavy wood, which especially excites lovers of smoky whiskies. And if the producer adds a bit of molasses to the rum in the traditional Guyanese way, you have a unique, very intense and heavy rum in the bottle. One of my favorites.

The 13 years of cask influence resulted in a strong dominance of oaky notes in this Enmore El Dorado rum. Nevertheless there are little hints of notes from the spirit but unfortunately mostly on the nose. Maybe a higher vol% would have given it a more interesting balance.

Nose: Lots of spiciness and pastry-like aromas. Nice cinnamon, plenty of vanilla beans. Very intense custard and a somewhat toasty side. Cannelés. Some dustiness, a vegetal note like banana leaf in the background. Crème caramel. Nice caramelized brittle and a side like roasted hazelnuts. Maybe a bit of milk chocolate. Some dustiness. Caramelized peanuts. Fried banana and maybe synthetic coffee aroma. Roasted hazelnuts make up most of the complexity. Almost a slight earthy background note. Nice! Palate: Dilution really shows here, quite watery body. Lots of custard and vanilla beans. Crème caramel and crème brûlée; caramel; both liquid and brittle forms. Medium sweetness present. Again synthetic coffee and cocoa aromas. Maybe some red apple and banana. Spices more in the background; maybe some clove and cinnamon. Tobacco! Filter coffee "grounds" add depth to the coffee. Slight vegetal background notes. It's surprising it retains some complexity even with this dilution. I would have liked to give it a higher score but unfortunately it lost a lot in body and complexity. Finish: Here roasted, bread, nuttiness; roasted hazelnuts and plenty of caramelized peanuts with Maillard-like aromas intensify. Reminds a bit of Snickers. Brown sugar forms the background. Slight vegetal note maybe at the very back. Intensity slightly above low, medium-short length finish. Apart from a bit short finish, no significant negatives; just that this shortness cuts off the potential complexity of the rum. General impression: I can't say it's unpleasant but one can't help but ask: "What would I see if I had the barrel proof version?" Actually, no need for barrel proof but a slightly higher strength; 46-50% range would allow this rum to fully express itself. Keeping these stills alive is very challenging but equally valuable. You really feel it transfers a different spirit into the glass. Price-performance: It might be more sensible to add a bit more and get the barrel proof version. Would I buy again?: If it were easy to find and at the right price, I might not turn my nose up but I'd prioritize a craft presentation version.

Port Mourant RX13844, Enmore RX13123 and Versailles RX14577 tested against each other. Unfortunately too thin and too expensive to give more points, but an exciting tasting of the different El Dorados. Delicious Enmore, would certainly have had a lot of potential undiluted.

Gift from my sister. Lovely Enmore stuff. As everyone else states a few more drops of percentage would lift it to the skies. But with that said this is still a mighty fine dram in the evening hours. Never ever will Guyana make me feel lost. Good stuff in a bottle.
