Mount Gay Black Barrel
Poured neat it reads dry and woody, with vanilla, caramel and toasted oak from the bourbon-cask aging, plus a little orange and a spicy, slightly alcoholic edge. Several members find it thin and one-dimensional on the palate, but it comes alive in a rum and coke. A few whisky drinkers use it as their crossover bottle.

- Great in cola
- But: Thin palate

How does Mount Gay Black Barrel taste?
Summarized by AI from community reviews.
Dry, woody Barbados rum for mixing Most see a dry, woody, bourbon-influenced Barbados rum that mixes better than it sips. Fans call it a reliable everyday pour; critics find the palate thin, hot and short on complexity.

All my Tastings and Scores are purely based on “Rums under £50”. I rarely look at Rums over £50 for my YouTube.

Solo strong alcohol perceptible. A rum that tastes more like whiskey than rum. I don't like whiskey, but it goes well with an old fashioned drink. Use translate 😅
Review by Joachim Guger
The nose is very good for a starter rum. Oak, tobacco, fruit and then polish. Very well balanced. In the mouth then disappointment. Woody, one dimensional and thin. The alcohol stings. As I said, a good introduction to unsweetened rum.
Review by Nicolas Kröger
Classic Barbados rum with balanced cask influence. Can be drunk neat but rather for mixing. Therefore a bit too expensive.
Review by Rumbaer
I had hoped for more, the gap to the Mount Gay XO is huge. It's definitely not bad, but it reminds me quite a bit of the Botucal. Lots of wood on the nose, some vanilla. In the background fruity notes and a bit of smoke. On the palate, lots of woody notes, toasted wood and vanilla.
Review by abaker-rum
This rum has a fruity nose that mixes in well with caramel and vanilla notes. There is a bit of Congac on the nose that shines through even more in the back end of the palate. A good mix of classic molasses rum flavors with a couple unique elements.
Review by DosenZorn
Good Mount Gay, where you can clearly taste the aging in bourbon barrels. Not as complex as the big brother XO, but still definitely one of the better rums.
Review by Gregor
In the smell very nice. Very strongly reminiscent of Spanish style. Then, unfortunately, thin on the palate. Hardly any complexity. Only light caramel vanilla tones with strong wood
Review by Lutz Lungershausen
After years, I remember that I didn't like it as much back then as I do today. Strong vanilla, initial roasted aromas and some fruit on the nose. On the palate, there are distinctive roasted and flamed wood aromas. Not usually my cup of tea, but very harmonious here. For sipping and mixing. . 04.2024 I find my previous impression confirmed. However, I wouldn't buy it again today.

Not too sweet and not too dry, very good balance. A real rum
Review by rum_sk
Revisiting after several years (5+) and it is a trip to the past. Very distinctive & characteristic sweet, fruity 👃. Still great on the 👅, still 🍌 and I mean a proper ripe banana. Green apple, dark chocolate, vanilla with touch of 🥥 & caramel, subtle earthy notes with hint of tobacco & charred barrel. Great neat sipping rum. Medium long finish. I am realizing that I did not appreciate this rum enough back then.
Review by TheJackDrop
Notes taken at Rhum Fest 2024, quick notes and a somewhat heavy palate, sorry :) Here we have: a light rum, vanilla, maybe a bit of toasted coconut, and especially caramel. Short, soft finish. Not bad, but nothing crazy.

Review by pavlix vipax
Like a very gentle, younger and sweeter (in the finish) whisky, super for the money, but less complex than XO, slight sting at the end, on the second try I really liked it, long, spicy but sweet, on the third try we raise from 8.2 to 8.4, weird day (Sunday 10.3.) somehow my tastes are set differently. Really whisky-like sweetness in the taste, but very drinkable.

Sweetish, spicy aroma. Taste: Very mild at the beginning, followed by a good spiciness that leads to a good strength

Good starter rum. The influence of the bourbon barrel is felt in the vanilla and sweet tones of aroma and taste. Herbaceousness and fruitiness are not very pronounced, but you can find them here. The taste is dry, a bit spirity, but it doesn't interfere. In the aftertaste, you can feel a salty sea breeze. Definitely worth trying.
Review by Solidfunk
Some fire pit, vanilla. Maybe apricot, but light. Pale golden pour. A little caramel, some oak. A little notion of dish detergent that i started to pick up later. Had in a Mount Gay flight at Cuba Libre.
Review by frseec
The rum has a light golden color and smells quite woody. On the palate, it is very alcoholic with notes of wood and vanilla. Overall, the taste is rather thin and the finish mainly leaves just the alcoholic flavor.

We couldn't smell or taste the advertised cinnamon note. Perfect for corn n oil
Review by Theo Pohle
A simple Barbados rum, nothing groundbreaking but still good for the price.

very good stuff

Great mixer—makes a really solid rum old fashioned. If you want a decent daily sipper, this works for that too. That said, I think it’s a bit overpriced and doesn’t really add much to the rum conversation. I’d take most longer aged Doorly’s expressions over this if you’re talking about bang for buck.

Aroma: saltiness, moisture, limes, bananas, young coconuts, toffee, sweetness, cream, raisins, coffee chocolate, Taste: sweet-salty, nuts, bananas, coconut, herbal notes, peanuts, dark brownie, lime zest and surprisingly lemon, Aftertaste: sweet, sour cocoa, milk chocolate, coffee, light smoke
Review by Wagnerlicious
If you like some smoke and roasted aromas, you'll find it in MG Black Barrel. Besides smoky, woody notes and citrus, both nose and palate reveal toffee, gingerbread and a bit of lychee. Enjoyable neat, better suited for mixing cocktails.
Review by Mark Leggett
A step up from the Eclipse. A little sweeter and better flavor overall.
Review by Abrahan Reyes
Pretty good for the price. The nose feels like a good Bourbon, delicate and fruity aroma, and some vanilla. The tasting is a little bit alcoholic but not overpowering, with some vanilla and caramel. Add a touch of water and this is where it shines, bringing some banana flavor.
Review by IBzerbasteln
Smells delicious. Tastes quite sharp, alcohol wise. Aromas only kick in when the alcohol fades out, and even then ten it’s not complex at all. You’d expect woodnotes but I’m not really tasting them either.
Review by D.B.
Dry, can be overwhelming at first. Once you get used to it, it's very vanilla-y.
Review by DruNierer
Not as developed as I was hoping for, you really need to struggle to get anything beside the smoky and peppery flavors. There is something funky on the nose I can best describe as sweaty gym clothes.
Review by Pavel Ungr, RumRock
I rate it 6.5 out of 10, average, nothing outstanding.

Nose: Quite alcoholic, not very intense, slightly vanilla, but very spicy. Palate: Sharpness also shows here, licorice and pepper, then wood and delicate caramel. Finish: Slightly smoky or burnt wood as well as tea. From Barbados you also know milder representatives, to me too alcoholic and too spicy without being complex.

this as a rum and coke is the best monry currently can buy .and lovely delicate notes ... Not strong in flavour but everything you want from a mixer rum with caramel and spices... The best rum and coke money can buy
Review by Ruminator
A very good Anchor rum with lots of spice, vanilla notes and caramel, a little sweetness and lots of oak barrel. Alcohol less well integrated compared to the XO Triple Cask.
Review by Mathieu Visiere
Roasted taste really nice final, long tasting and sweet. Better than the eclipse one and well balanced for that price range.
Review by Peter Škabla
Decent dry rum. Would taste much better if the finish was not so harsh.
