"Not the best actually not even mediocre," shrugs one taster — yet the 2008 is widely called one of the better vintages in this Velier Saint James vertical. Expect roasted, spicy oak, grassy sugarcane, dried apricots and citrus. The recurring catch is a soapy, perfumed note that surfaces on the palate; some barely notice it, others find it ruins the glass.

Wieder Eiche, erdig, sehr trocken. Und dann - diesmal zurückhaltend - die parfümierte Seife. Im Mund prickelnd und langer, guter Abgang. Intensive Zitrusfrüchte. Ausgewogen, gute Trinkstärke. Von oben (2015) runter verkostet bis jetzt der Beste.

No joke, this is by far the most disgusting "real" rum I've ever drunk. This soap note is so present and disgusting both on the nose and on the palate. Hard to believe Luca bottled something like this...

Franconian tasting gang on 10.05.2024 First a big thank you to DomM who provided this set. Personally, the profile didn't grab me. Except for one exception, this soap taste is too much for me. The leftovers in the glasses ended up thanks to DomM and Serge in a spontaneous and outstanding cocktail.

7,6:On the nose, the first impression we get is fresh and herbaceous sugar cane, dried fruits and pears, roasted, spicy wood, slightly medicinal. On aeration, the cane is flowery, but a bit musty, roastedness brings nuts and dark chocolate.There are citrus fruits, some mild solvents flow underneath... 7,8:On the palate, the attack is fruity with dried fruits like apricots, raisins, grassy and vegetal sugarcane, the wood is roasted with caramel, quite dry and spicy with vanilla, peppery.Resting the rum helps green aspect if cane with flowery, grassy and herbaceous touch, a bit musty, lime and berries, a bitterness is inevitable. 8:The finish is the most pleasant, less dry, more balanced with variety of fruits like dried apricots, currants, cherry, peaches and lime peel, passion fruit in the end.The cane is floral and grassy, fresh with tea, slightly earthy. The DNA of the series remains recognizable, in addition, a sweet mango note as well as light sulfur appears in the nose - extraordinary and still quite interesting. Unfortunately, the tide turns fundamentally in the mouth - it becomes soapy-floral. Although the basic profile remains recognizable, it is too clearly overlaid by the aforementioned off-notes in my perception. Unsurprisingly, no other picture emerges on the palate - thus unfortunately disappointing.

Parallel tasting of the Velier Saint James range in the Franconian Tasting Gang. Thanks Dom for opening them 👌 Overall, the set is not outstandingly good for me but rather average with a few outliers up and down. Brief summary by vintages: 2015 & 2014 were rather unpleasant for me. 2010 & 2012 better but still nothing I would want to drink again. 2008 & 2006 & 2004 were then clearly better and more interesting. 2002 then a total failure again (cat pee that developed into multivitamin tablets and doesn't fit the wood at all). 2000 then good again and 1998 for me the best from the set.

Großes VSGB-Vertical-live-Tasting von und mit Luca Gargano. 22.10.2022, 16:39. Nase: Holzig, aber eher Richtung Karton, kräuterig-wurzelig mit ein wenig Essig, Sahnetoffe mit einem Spritzer Zitrone, säuerlicher Johannisbeere und mehlige Banane. Dazu leicht Sesam. Gaumen: sehr viel Säure zu Beginn, leicht metallisch, bitter und in Zitrone übergehend. Dahinter kommt Heu und grasiges Zuckerrohr. Wirkt verdünnt. Im Abgang bleiben Zitrone und Heu. Platz: N: 5/10 G: 2/10

This set should have been tasted a long time ago. Anyway, the ratings are going downhill right now. I like the nose with wood and mint. On the palate it loses significantly, very silky, grassy and bitter. A pity.

Franconian Rum Tasting Gang, 2024-05-10, Saint James 25 AOC Anniversaire (thanks to Dom): The 2008 is middle-aged in the lineup but is among the better vintages in terms of taste.

This 2008 vintage has some nicely concentrated sweet fruity flavours on the palate. For me, this is its strength compared to the younger vintages from the release. Is it an outstanding rum? I am afraid not. But in general, definitely worth trying! Don't expect too much and you won't be disappointed.
