Velier Saint James Sélection exclusive Velier 2006
One taster called this "a breaking point" in the vertical — the 2006 where things step up. Expect grassy sugarcane, lemon and dried fruit over roasted French oak, with vanilla, leather and a dry, slightly bitter finish. A few loved the balance and red-fruit notes; others found the palate thin and the wood a bit much. Genuine aged agricole character.
The community says- Grassy citrus nose
- Roasted oak balance
- But: Thin on palate

Slightly better than the standard 15 year release. Better balance but I'd like a higher ABV 😊 Waiting for the rest if the samples to arrive so I can score them as well (7 samples were broken when they arrived, postal services in Denmark is not always good) .

Franconian tasting gang on 10.05.2024 First a big thank you to DomM who provided this set. Personally, the profile didn't grab me. Except for one exception, this soap taste is too much for me. The leftovers in the glasses ended up thanks to DomM and Serge in a spontaneous and outstanding cocktail.

On the nose, besides wood, spices and sweetness of vanilla and nougat, an appealing floral note reminiscent of citrus-floral perfume. On the palate again quite citrus-fresh aromas combined with smoky and floral notes. The profile itself doesn't completely win me over but will surely find its fans.

Tasted at a private tasting. Pretty woody this one. French oak/Armagnac/cognac with that typical acidity. Red fruits. Cherry. Oak is very present in the nose. Some velpon too. Taste. Delicious. Wood and flowers. Very balanced. Menthol too. This might be one of my favourites of the Velier vintages. A bit of everything that makes Saint James great. Lovely.

8,2:On the nose, typical agricole with grassy, perfumed sugarcane, citrus and dried fruits like raisins, apricots, roasted wood, slightly spicy with nutmeg On aeration, the cane is herbaceous, flowery, we have caramel, nuts and cocoa from roasted notes and yellow fruits. 7,7:On the palate, the attack is a bit imbalanced, sour with spicy, roasted wood with caramel, chocolate and leather, quite dry and yellow, dried fruits, the sugarcane is weaker.Just after resting the rum, the cane releases flowery and herbaceous touch, spices are strong with allspice, salt, weak vanilla, as the wood is smoky. 7,9: The finish is more balanced, still dry, a bit bitter with grassy, flowery, herbaceous cane and black tea, slightly earthy, the wood still roasted with crème brûlée, chocolate, nougat, confectionery, peppery, the fruits are citrus, dried..

This time fresh again in the form of citrus fruits. The floral perfume is now restrained and enriches the profile without tipping it. Great nose. Also good on the palate. Slightly animalistic. Amazing how consistent the series stays on one line.

Parallel tasting of the Velier Saint James range in the Franconian Tasting Gang. Thanks Dom for opening them 👌 Overall, the set is not outstandingly good for me but rather average with a few outliers up and down. Brief summary by vintages: 2015 & 2014 were rather unpleasant for me. 2010 & 2012 better but still nothing I would want to drink again. 2008 & 2006 & 2004 were then clearly better and more interesting. 2002 then a total failure again (cat pee that developed into multivitamin tablets and doesn't fit the wood at all). 2000 then good again and 1998 for me the best from the set.

Nice and round, some wood, citrus, chocolate, maybe a bit thin.
Review by Timo Groeger
This set has been waiting a long time to be tasted. Next up the 2006. Also solid. Wood/oak, as well as vanilla and caramel on the nose. On the palate also lots of wood, plus vanilla, Agricole and sugarcane.

Great VSGB vertical live tasting by and with Luca Gargano. 22.10.2022, 16:42. Weather-wise this was a perfect year. Nose: a bit fresher than the others, yet initially spicy-woody. Lemon and mandarin come with currant, again fragrant sandalwood and at the back some nougat with lovage. Palate: again thin, again distinct acidity, almost metallic. Woody. Lemon peel with vanilla and leather. Overall quite dry. Grassy at the back. So-so. Score: N: 6/10 P: 8/10

Great Agricole! A highlight of the series.

Franconian Rum Tasting Gang, 2024-05-10, Saint James 25 AOC Anniversaire (thanks to Dom): Drinkable, rather in the middle of the range. Fruity, floral, lightly perfumed. But it lacks complexity and here the wood bothers me a bit.
Review by Alex Kunath
Very solid and above all no soapy note.
Review by Pavel Spacek
This Saint James was definitely not Velier masterpiece. Just one common filling to co tinue the production.

I had this rum in a vertical tasting of the 10 vintages from this release and I feel like this exact vintage is a breaking point in terms of quality. Compared to the younger vintages, for me the 2006 steps up the game. Flavour profile as I got it was very fruity, kind of woody, but in a good way and there are also some spicy notes present. Lovely stuff!
Review by Adrien B
Nose: opens little by little from dusty to fruity. Palate: woody, astringent, typical Bally 2006.
Review by Dimitri Van Loo
St James where the woodiness is present but still leaves room for the other aromas
Review by Johan R
A bit oilier, sweet on the attack, perfumed but more restrained. Best so far.
