Velier Saint James Sélection exclusive Velier 2010
Here's the surprise: the nose pulls people in — dried apricot, mandarin, grassy cane, tobacco, even glue and vanilla — and then the palate hits a soapy, perfumed note that most tasters flag as an off-note. One reviewer said you'd swear you were "sucking on a bar of lavender soap." A minority tastes past it to fruity mandarin and spice, but the split is real.
The community says- Fruity, complex nose
- Grassy cane character
- But: Soapy off-note

How does Velier Saint James Sélection exclusive Velier 2010 taste?
Summarized by AI from community reviews.
Great nose, divisive soapy agricole palate Most agree the aromatic, fruity nose is lovely, then a soapy, perfumed note takes over the palate. A few enjoyed the mandarin-and-spice character; more found the soap too much.

Parallel tasting of the Velier Saint James range in the Franconian Tasting Gang. Thanks Dom for opening them 👌 Overall, the set is not outstandingly good for me but rather average with a few outliers up and down. Brief summary by vintages: 2015 & 2014 were rather unpleasant for me. 2010 & 2012 better but still nothing I would want to drink again. 2008 & 2006 & 2004 were then clearly better and more interesting. 2002 then a total failure again (cat pee that developed into multivitamin tablets and doesn't fit the wood at all). 2000 then good again and 1998 for me the best from the set.

On the nose roasted hazelnuts, nougat, tobacco, grassy freshness and - surprise - perfume/soap. Yuck! In the mouth you feel like sucking on a piece of lavender soap. Plus an excess of tannins... I like it very much on the nose, the aging curve seems to be at its zenith here, but then the typical off-note of this series hits the palate. Something went wrong.

8,2:On the nose, a lot of fruits with dried apricots, banana, citrus like mandarine and lime peel, peaches, pairing grassy sugar cane and roasted wood with allspice, is the first impression we get. On aeration, the fruits are candied, the cane herbaceous, vegetal with mushrooms, earthy with tobacco and flowery, perfumed, a bit mineral.Waxy, medicinal notes arise, stronger roasted notes with caramel, nuts, pastry, a hint of Maggi and red fruits. 8,2:On the palate, the attack is fruity with citrus fruits like lemon, then cherry and peaches, woody with roasted notes like caramel, nuts, coffee, spices like pepper and salt, as the cane is grassy, fresh with tea. Resting the rum helps raisins and lemon peel, chocolate and leather, pastry, flowery and herbaceous touch of cane, some soap. 8,1:The finish is long, dry and bitter with sugarcane honey, grassy and flowery, vegetal with black tea, tobacco, the fruits are yellow, as the wood roasted, smoky with dark chocolate, coffee, peppery...

Big VSGB vertical live tasting by and with Luca Gargano. 22.10.2022, 16:33. Unlike 2012, 2010 was very rainy with hurricanes. Nose: woody-spicy, mandarin and lemon with some vinegar, caramel and toffee, balanced and round, a bit of Maggi at the back. Palate: woody, spicy, soapy, licorice, from lemon to grassy. Score: N: 2/10 P: 3/10

Franconian tasting gang on 10.05.2024 First a big thank you to DomM who provided this set. Personally, the profile didn't grab me. Except for one exception, this soap taste is too much for me. The leftovers in the glasses ended up thanks to DomM and Serge in a spontaneous and outstanding cocktail.

This Saint James was definitely not Velier masterpiece. Just one common filling to co tinue the production.

Interesting nose full of christmas spices - licorice, cloves, cardamom; together with some sweet fruity candies and dried herbs. The taste and finish are also pretty nice, fruity, I got quite pronounced mandarin notes accompanied by the classic vegetal, grassy notes. Don't really understand the lower rating with this rum, I quite liked it. :)

Still reasonably pleasing on the nose, although hints of the soapy off-note are already recognizable here too. This is also clearly evident on the palate, even if it is not completely overpowering. Nevertheless, it should be noted that real enjoyment does not materialize. Too bad.

Tasted at a private tasting. I remember this was a people's favourite. Good flavours not too old not too young. Nose: glue/nail polish. Vanilla. Caramel. Lime. Weird. Nice! Taste: soft agricole at first. Then very flowery. Parfum. Cardemom. Outspoken stuff. Funky in a non high esther way. White pepper. I like this but it's weird.

This set has long wanted to be tasted. The last one today is the 2010, the last three will follow tomorrow. Woody and medicinal on the nose. On the palate mostly wood, but also caramel, soap and grass. Nothing special.

Franconian Rum Tasting Gang, 2024-05-10, Saint James 25 AOC Anniversaire (thanks to Dom): I would like to rate the 2010 a bit higher, but unfortunately this vintage also shows unpleasant soap notes on the palate.
Review by Kevin Sorensen 🇩🇰
Yikes, this one is even worse than the previous one. I thought I got a soap flavour from the previous one but on this one it's pretty clear.
Review by Adrien B
Vertical series Nose increasingly concentrated Mouth spicy bergamot of wood, slight roughness, quite lively, quite, too woody
Review by Oliver
Pleasant nose. But also again unusual soap associations on the palate.
Review by Johan R
Grassy, less perfume but it still lingers. A bit rounder.
Review by Johannes
Again here a clear off-note of soap.
Review by Alex Kunath
Spicy soap... really bad again. :(
