This one is far more complex than the younger one and especially the wood is more present. I like the herbal, minty and tobacco touch it has. Not your typical Saint James. There is a kind of medicinal note I can't put my finger on.

Subtle fruit on the nose, which comes across as less fresh than in other vintages. In addition, green herbs, tobacco, spices and medicinal-herbal notes. After some time in the glass, I think I detect a slight floral-spicy perfume note here as well. The nose shows a nice complexity and definitely makes you want more. On the palate, the herbs and floral notes become a bit more apparent, along with citrus freshness, light toastiness, and wood and spice. The bottom line is an appealing spectrum of flavors, which unfortunately remains too unbalanced for my taste. After tasting again, however, I round up slightly for the great nose and the basic aromatic complexity.

Franconian tasting gang on 10.05.2024 First a big thank you to DomM who provided this set. Personally, the profile didn't grab me. Except for one exception, this soap taste is too much for me. The leftovers in the glasses ended up thanks to DomM and Serge in a spontaneous and outstanding cocktail.

Parallel tasting of the Velier Saint James range in the Franconian Tasting Gang. Thanks Dom for opening them 👌 Overall, the set is not outstandingly good for me but rather average with a few outliers up and down. Brief summary by vintages: 2015 & 2014 were rather unpleasant for me. 2010 & 2012 better but still nothing I would want to drink again. 2008 & 2006 & 2004 were then clearly better and more interesting. 2002 then a total failure again (cat pee that developed into multivitamin tablets and doesn't fit the wood at all). 2000 then good again and 1998 for me the best from the set.

Great, red-golden color. I really like it on the nose. Woody, cookies and spices. Dried fruits and a hint of flowers. Nice mouthfeel, full and warm. Alcohol just right. The first in the series I would like to have a bottle of to drink.

8,1:On the nose, the first impression we get is very pleasant with roasted wood notes like leather, nuts, fruits like citrus and dried ones, a sugarcane is herbaceous, earthy, musty, flowery, grassy and peppery. On aeration, Maggi note is out, some confectionery, dark chocolate and yellow fruits, currants. 7,8:On the palate, the cane is herbaceous, minty, grassy, earthy, musty, the fruits are red, dried and yellow, some orange and banana join, the wood is roasted with nuts, leather, chocolate and pastry, spicy with vanilla, nutmeg. After resting the rum, it becomes a bit bitter, dry, flowery. 7,8:The finish is medium long, dry and tannic, the cane is green with grass tea, flowery, herbaceous touch, peppery, the wood is still roasted and spicy, a bit smoky with confectionery, dried fruits are weak..

Big VSGB vertical live tasting by and with Luca Gargano. 22.10.2022, 16:48. Another rainy year, little sugar content in the sugarcane. Therefore a rare vintage. Nose: very balanced woody-spicy. Old, aromatic sandalwood with old cardamom and vanilla powder, plus blackcurrant and blood orange. Slightly Maggi-like at the back. No toffee, no soap. Good. Palate: soft and balanced woody-spicy-nutty-minty. A noticeable but rather pleasant acidity quickly turns into aromatic woodiness. Here then pecan nut with nutmeg, vanilla and espresso. A light orange note before grass and green tea take over. Score: N: 9/10 P: 9/10

This set has been waiting a long time to be tasted. With the 2004 you can't go wrong, quite okay. We have wood, vanilla, and especially herbs on the nose and palate. On the palate then slightly bitter.

Franconian Rum Tasting Gang, 2024-05-10, Saint James 25 AOC Anniversaire (thanks to Dom): The 2004 is one of the better releases of the series. Less fruity and sweet, more woody, spicy, floral and again soap-free 😂

Flavour-wise I would describe this 2004 vintage as dark berry-fruity, woody, forest honey-sweet. I even got a bit of tannins and woodiness I did not feel in the previous younger vintages from this release, but it's not that I would perceive it as negative feature. I am definitely coming back to this one some time!

On the nose, pretty typical aged agricole, with the wood clearly noticeable, some chocolate and floral notes. Pleasant but some hints of the bitterness are already noticeable on the nose. Drink side, the bitterness is almost impossible to overcome, after few sips it is still there along with the woody notes and hidden many of the flavours

Actually quite nice notes on the nose. Has a bit of raisiny grassiness. On the palate, for me, the agricole notes with herbs are dominant. Not even too sharp on the first sip. Quite pleasant, this thing.
