Velier Saint James Sélection exclusive Velier 2012
Perfumed soap is the note almost everyone lands on here, over a base of roasted wood, grass, licorice and citrus peel. This 2012 Saint James from Velier came from a dry harvest year, and it shows: woody, spicy, medicinal, a little astringent. Some tasters find the soapiness fascinating, others call it a fault they can't get past. Divisive, and not the sweet side of agricole.
The community says- Roasted wood depth
- Good drinking strength
- But: Strong soapy note

8,2:On the nose, the first impression we get is a darker agricole rum, with grassy, vegetal(olive) sugarcane, licorice, roasted wood, spicy and medicinal, mostly with some rubber, wax, fruity with citrus like lemon/lemon peel. On aeration, the cane is herbaceous, flowery, the wood releases nuts, caramel, smokiness and a lot of spices like vanilla, cinammon, umami, allspice, later tannins, a note of soap is there, fruits like pineapple, dried. 8,2:On the palate, the sugarcane attack is fresh with tea, flowery, vegetal, grassy, a bit sweet with honey, then smoky, roasted wood tones like brown sugar, leather, pastry, spices like vanilla, pepper and salt. The licorice brings dark bias, so does black tea an umami. The fruits show is mostly citrus and dried...Soap is still in the game. 8,1:The finish is medium long, dry and tannic, medicinal, of course, soapy and green with flowery, grassy, herbaceous and perfumed cane, darker with roasted wood notes like cocoa, leather, still spicy, fruity with some lemon peel ...

Again spicy soap and again just bad.

Here, too, the DNA is recognizable in the nose, wood, herbs, roasted aromas - in addition, a floral-perfumed note comes to the fore, which fades slightly into soapy. On the palate, light citrus fruits, wood, roasted aromas, herbs and hay; however, a disturbing medicinal-waxy off-note comes to the fore that irritates me. Unfortunately, this off-note also remains present in the finish, which is why I cannot give it a better rating.

Franconian tasting gang on 10.05.2024 First a big thank you to DomM who provided this set. Personally, the profile didn't grab me. Except for one exception, this soap taste is too much for me. The leftovers in the glasses ended up thanks to DomM and Serge in a spontaneous and outstanding cocktail.

Unusual perfumed soap associations on the palate. Not my cup of tea.

Much better than the previous two but a bit out of balance in my mind.

Parallel tasting of the Velier Saint James range in the Franconian Tasting Gang. Thanks Dom for opening them 👌 Overall, the set is not outstandingly good for me but rather average with a few outliers up and down. Brief summary by vintages: 2015 & 2014 were rather unpleasant for me. 2010 & 2012 better but still nothing I would want to drink again. 2008 & 2006 & 2004 were then clearly better and more interesting. 2002 then a total failure again (cat pee that developed into multivitamin tablets and doesn't fit the wood at all). 2000 then good again and 1998 for me the best from the set.

Great VSGB vertical live tasting by and with Luca Gargano. 22.10.2022, 16:27. 2012 was probably one of the driest years on Martinique. Nose: less creamy and fruity, rather woody-spicy and earthy-peaty. Muted fruit towards cherry and currant. Slightly nutty with pecan. Slightly soapy at the back. Palate: initially thin, then sour salty with unpleasant soapy taste. Then a more pleasant transition over wood and old cardamom powder to licorice, violet, and finally green tea and grass. Score: N: 7/10 P: 4/10

This set should have been tasted a long time ago. Thanks to Dr. Django for this. Three are not missing and unfortunately they are getting worse and worse. Still relatively woody, outdoors. Very floral and unfortunately also very soapy :-(

Strange why many SJs of this series have such a soap off-note.

First post-Corona tasting, curious how my sensory perception is. It’s dominated by perfumed soap. Alongside that, nice wood maturity, good drinking strength. That may please the nose. When drinking, it bothers quite a bit, very artificial.

Franconian Rum Tasting Gang, 2024-05-10, Saint James 25 AOC Anniversaire (thanks to Dom): Almost at the very end of today’s scale, only beaten by the 2015. One of the very soapy representatives in the lineup.
Review by Pavel Spacek
This Saint James was definitely not Velier masterpiece. Just one common filling to co tinue the production.

I was surprised by how the flavours of this rum were not really present on my tongue. I don't mean to say that it has no flavours, it does, and the overall sensation of tasting it is not directly unpleasant. But it feels like it had some potential that got flushed away by dilution. Strange that its younger brothers (2014 and 2015 vintages) have more character than this one does.

2002 The complete UFO of the vertical! Blindfolded on the nose, you might think it's Jamaican, it's quite crazy, like a Long Pond tropi without the glue/varnish side even though there are slight esters. The mango is (really) overripe in front of everything else for me, but it's very fruity (also overripe pineapple, wrinkled passion fruit), an almost smoky/decayed side that would almost remind me from afar (because much less intense) of the Teca 2003. It's crazy to have all that on an agricole. Sometimes out of nowhere you quickly find this Saint James woodiness, but it's probably because I know it. Anyway, the wood took a good 20 minutes to arrive. The texture is mouthfeeling, it coats the tongue (bordering on soapy but still pleasant) like the rest of the series, we will always reproach this I-don't-know-what a bit floaty, on such beautiful profiles it's a bit frustrating. Unfortunately, you find much less of the fruits from the nose on the palate even though all remains pleasant. It's extremely woody, but the bitterness of the tannins remains "relatively" controlled. The finish is a bit floral on jasmine, peppery, bitterness carried by blood orange zest. It's a rum I love for the experience it offers, but it's neither an example of balance nor elegance, quite the opposite...

A bit more on the perfumed side again. Quite a nice aftertaste though of peat.

Vertical series Nose: fermented white fruit, very waxy, Palate: the wood more melted, heavier, vanilla, slight astringency, still floral.
