8,2:On the nose, the first impression we get is darker with sherry notes like dried fruits like raisins, apricots, roasted wood and toffee, nuts, dark chocolate, leather, as a sugarcane is flowery and herbaceous. On aeration, stronger spices as allspice, maggi, vanilla are noticed, smokiness, new fruits like citrus, pineapple and some walnuts, vegetal cane. 7,9:On the palate, the attack is light, soapy with sugarcane honey, mineral, citrus fruits, roasted wood with caramel, chocolate, spicy with vanilla, pepper, ginger and smoky.Resting the rum brings greener cane with grassy, flowery and herbaceous touch, more fruity tones with dried, green fruits. 7,3:The finish is short, dry and light, bitter, still soapy and green, fresh with grass, tea, floral notes, a bit vegetal, slightly fruity, the wood is still roasted, smoky and spicy...

Even though I hate when someone says a rum tastes like whisky, with this Saint James, I must say I have a strong whisky-ish vibes. Almost like nosing a really nice scotch unpeated single malt. For me, this vintage is kind of on the same level as the 2015, with the exception of this one being more "nutty" and "darker" in flavours compared to the youngest brother in series.

Franconian tasting gang on 10.05.2024 First a big thank you to DomM who provided this set. Personally, the profile didn't grab me. Except for one exception, this soap taste is too much for me. The leftovers in the glasses ended up thanks to DomM and Serge in a spontaneous and outstanding cocktail.

Tasted at a private tasting for a good cause. 9th of the 10 Velier vintages. This had a bit of everything we tasted of all the other vintages. A great mix. Lighter in woodiness than the 2015. Buttery. Creamy but also something weirdy sharp. Lemons. Interesting. In taste: waxy agricole. Subtle wood flavours. More classic dry yet fresh agricole. Some hay. Reminds me a bit of Neisson 105.

In the nose pleasing, but somewhat unimpressive in comparison: More fresh fruit, nice wood sweetness, again slightly floral notes. On the palate, nice wood, smokiness, subtle nougat and caramel sweetness and dried fruit. Solid, although in my opinion on the border of too intense smokiness.

I'm not a fan of agricole rum. I really like the consistency when it's mahogany and pulls nicely. The dominant scent is wood and almost like soap, which is strange... after sipping it's very gentle, alcohol well integrated. On the palate gentle wood, again soap and a pleasant finish.

A very mild and kind of light Agricole. You can taste that it's a younger version. Pretty fruity with light wood and some vanilla. The empty glass is really nice after a while where the fruitiness is really set free alongside chocolate.

This set should have been tasted a long time ago. Here we have the penultimate, the 2014. I'd say average rum. Good woody, but we also have vanilla, agricole and unfortunately soap again. Cheers.

Compared to 2015 now fresher tropical fruit, less citrus. Otherwise similar profile and similar quality. On the palate very, very peppery and then the floral notes, this time soapy.

Parallel tasting of the Velier Saint James range in the Franconian Tasting Gang. Thanks Dom for opening them 👌 Overall, the set is not outstandingly good for me but rather average with a few outliers up and down. Brief summary by vintages: 2015 & 2014 were rather unpleasant for me. 2010 & 2012 better but still nothing I would want to drink again. 2008 & 2006 & 2004 were then clearly better and more interesting. 2002 then a total failure again (cat pee that developed into multivitamin tablets and doesn't fit the wood at all). 2000 then good again and 1998 for me the best from the set.
