Velier Saint James Sélection exclusive Velier 2015
Sipped neat, this young Saint James agricole leans fresh and grassy with young oak, vanilla and a peppery bite. The thing everyone talks about is a floral, soapy, almost perfume-like note that runs through nose and palate. Some tasters find it fresh and lively, others call it hard to drink. A divisive one for agricole fans who don't mind lavender and soap.

How does Velier Saint James Sélection exclusive Velier 2015 taste?
Summarized by AI from community reviews.
Young, grassy agricole with divisive soapy note Genuinely split. Fans call it a fresh, floral young rhum; plenty of others find the soap and perfume note off-putting enough to spoil it. Cane, spice and young wood underneath.

11.01.2026 Another nice sample I had in a box that I wanted to retry. Still a pretty ok release. Warming up a bit for our small online tasting tonight. ---------- Finally got the package with the replacement samples and this time nothing was broken. I will add them as I taste them over the next few days. This one is kind of light, but it is also a young rum. Fruity with spices and some wood.

Surprising, tasted first on the advent calendar and it starts strong, I find it has a big dominance of fresh grass both on the nose and on the palate. A really very long finish and always on this same scent of freshness, or fresh and young wood maybe. Very surprising anyway compared to what I know, even if it's not to my taste. I'm happy to know it but especially not to have the bottle.
Review by Jakob
Compared to the 2014, the floral note is hardly noticeable here. Otherwise similar on the nose, fresh fruit, light woody sweetness and herbs. On the palate, after the initial freshness, a floral, soapy note emerges again - with increasing time in the glass - which initially stands out with every sip and unfortunately makes it difficult for me to enjoy. In the finish, the soapy note recedes into the background. Smokiness, herbs and spices dominate, while the typical profile remains discernible. After the second attempt, I revise my original rating somewhat, as the soapy note is less present than I had originally perceived, at least in the finish. Nevertheless, I can't give it a good rating because I find the soapy note simply annoying.

Beautiful, young, classic Saint James.

Franconian tasting gang on 10.05.2024 First a big thank you to DomM who provided this set. Personally, the profile didn't grab me. Except for one exception, this soap taste is too much for me. The leftovers in the glasses ended up thanks to DomM and Serge in a spontaneous and outstanding cocktail.
Review by Johannes
Perhaps no longer quite so disturbing, but here too a soapy aftertaste.

Parallel tasting of the Velier Saint James range in the Franconian Tasting Gang. Thanks Dom for opening them 👌 Overall, the set is not outstandingly good for me but rather average with a few outliers up and down. Brief summary by vintages: 2015 & 2014 were rather unpleasant for me. 2010 & 2012 better but still nothing I would want to drink again. 2008 & 2006 & 2004 were then clearly better and more interesting. 2002 then a total failure again (cat pee that developed into multivitamin tablets and doesn't fit the wood at all). 2000 then good again and 1998 for me the best from the set.
Review by Timo Groeger
This set has been waiting to be tasted for a long time. I find it relatively similar to the 1998. Lots of wood, vanilla and caramel. But unfortunately it's quite soapy, otherwise the rating would be much higher ;-) Solid piece.

8,1:On the nose, sugarcane honey and citrus fruits with fresh, herbaceous, grassy and flowery touch are the first thing we notice. On aeration, a wood is roasted, smoky with nougat, caramel and spicy, some soap note arises... 8:On the palate, the attack is fruity with citrus, red and dried fruits, hints of banana, later there is an apple, sugarcane is grassy, herbaceous and flowery, as the wood is roasted with caramel, chocolate, spicy with pepper, vanilla, ginger, after resting the rum, a bit resinous, salty. The soap note is still present. 7,8:The finish is medium long, dry, fruity, then bitter with vegetal, grassy, flowery sugarcane, honey still found, the wood is roasted, toasted, spicy...

Big VSGB vertical live tasting by and with Luca Gargano. 22.10.2022, 16:18. Nose: woody-spicy with slightly sour currant, some lemon and a bit of vinegar, then lots of white nougat and toffee with vanilla, slightly smoky and a hint of soap at the back. Pleasant. Palate: clearly less wood acidity than its 20-year-old brother. Almost soft but also quite thin. Woody at the start, then quickly becomes quite soapy. Some violet-licorice comes through before it turns herbal, rooty and grassy. Grassy sugarcane, violet and fennel on the finish. Less acidity pleases me, more soap does not. Also a bit too thin. Score: N: 8/10 P: 7/10

Franconian Rum Tasting Gang, 2024-05-10, Saint James 25 AOC Anniversaire (thanks to Dom): Help! I have to wash your tongue. If you're not a fan of perfume-soap notes, then this rum is an imposition.
Review by VitaliiZaichuk
interesting rhum agricole on the nose like a regular rhum from Martinique, but on the taste a very intense taste of soap and perfume, also grass , vegetal. I have never encountered such flavors in rhum anywhere else))
Review by Fabrice Rouanet
Tasted blind and I immediately felt a disturbing sensation on the nose and palate. On the nose the spices are very strong (clove) with a damp woody, undergrowth. After airing, you find ripe fruits, dry chocolate. On the palate, my palate is immediately seized by an aggressive medicinal side, dental wood, as if an incense had soaked in the juice. Trying to ignore these disturbing notes, I manage to perceive vegetal, animal notes, a very intense pepperiness. The alcohol is very present which makes me think of a "young" old rum. The finish is long but this length is not pleasant, with aromas of medicine still, thyme and herbs of Provence. Too unsettling for me.
Review by Joachim Guger
I like the nose very much. Citrus fruits, macaroons, fine spice. The mouth continues in a similar way, very peppery and crisp. Floral perfume. Very good Agricole, easy to drink. Oscillates between floral perfume and floral soap.
Review by Alex Kunath
The soap is no longer so present. But the rum is still not good.
Review by Palo - V Poháriku
Decent stuff, although nothing that would make me go too crazy. It's kind on one-dimensional, enjoyable to sip, delivering the level I expected. Nose is quite stingy at first, but over time it develops into some fruity / woody / dried flowers notes. On the palate I got mostly citrus oil, sweet toffee or caramel notes and a bit of bitterness.
Review by Tomas Hajlich
I'm not a fan of agricole rum. I really like the consistency when it's mahogany and pulls nicely. The dominant scent is wood and almost like soap, which is strange... after sipping it's very gentle, alcohol well integrated. On the palate gentle wood, again soap and a pleasant finish.

Tasted at a private tasting for a good cause. This was the last of the 10 Velier vintages. All very different and good. This was obviously the youngest. More young wood/virgin/US oaky than the others. Some of us really loved this one in contrast to the older ones. This was not the best but still a very good agricole rhum. Pretty woody but still fresh. Pretty floral/lavenderish. A bit "soapy" at times.

Calendar la routedesrhums 2022 sample no. 1. Color amber. Aroma grass, wood, flowers. Taste grass, spice, wood, mustiness, wet socks. Finish medium-long distinctly wood, mustiness, wet socks. Aroma is better than taste, that mustiness bothers me quite a bit.
Review by laudhar
The nose is slightly woody. You also feel the spices. A soap scent appears quickly. The tastes confirm the nose but the soap seems even more present than on the nose. Definitely not made for me, this kind of sensation.

Vertical series Nose: nice fresh woody fruity orange, tobacco, alcohol Palate: very fresh, waxy, very floral, mentholated Conclusion: Very surprising, too floral for me, nice to taste but I wouldn’t buy a bottle
Review by Johan R
Interesting. Taste of perfume and minty touches.
Review by Rumclub Latvia
Very nice young Rhum. Really like this vintage, more than 2014
Review by kargoles
A very vegetal and slightly woody Saint James. The length on the palate is quite qualitative but a bit too much focused on the wood in my opinion.
Review by YoukiPassion
The nose is okay but on the palate a very particular taste. The impression of drinking perfume, I read soap taste, there's some of that. Maybe an issue with my sample but for me borderline drinkable.
Review by RumRhush
The perfume/soap note in the mouth makes the rum undrinkable for me. This note found in several rums of this series makes me think of a problem in the packaging. I will have to talk about it with Marc Sassier and Luca. Problem: I don't know either of them...
