One taster called this "rum as perfume" and it's easy to see why: an elegant, floral nose of sweet orange and cherry, then a buttery, oily palate of caramel, vanilla and citrus. Molasses-based but drinks a lot like an old agricole. A few detect an almost candied, slightly artificial sweetness and question where it comes from, and the finish runs short.

Wow, what a nose - almost like perfume. Sweet oranges, floral and elegant. Complex and extremely creamy on the palate. The surprisingly subtle wood influence perfectly underlines the intense fruitiness of the 50-year-old rum. A sweet finish to fall in love with. Excellent! A little too beastly in the finish for a top rating (at a high level, of course).

For me, Courcelles has an extraordinary profile. Yes, quite soft and harmonious, but way too artificial aromas, in the nose and on the palate they give a perfumed impression. Extremely much vanilla, lots of fruit, a present sweetness – is that still natural? Where do these sweet notes come from? Compared to similarly aged rums, it lacks the woody, bitter (typical for oak) aroma. So I’m skeptical here... I like this one best among the 3 Courcelles in the glass...

An absolutely impressive distillate with mature, multi-layered aromas and a clear signature. The entire Rum House range impresses with its character and depth, and this bottling is also a pleasure to drink. Compared to the other two 1972 Courcelles, it is somewhat more restrained, but still at a high level and stylistically very successful.

The new version (2022) of Courcelles 1972 from Swiss bottler Rhum House. It's 50 years old! The nose is fresh and delicate, with salted butter caramel, wild cherry and light tar. The palate entry is surprisingly smooth considering the ABV. The aromas develop harmoniously, yet become stronger, with herbs first, then bitter cherries and, like "Carambar", a stick of salted butter toffee. The finish is fruity, long and refined, gourmand. In the empty glass, all the aromas blend harmoniously. The palate is even more beautiful than the nose. A mysterious rum that reveals itself bit by bit, so take your time.

Wow! I dont believe this rum was made just original way. The taste of oranges is so intense, that you think you taste sirup (not sweet). Wow again. I have already bought 10 bottles for myself next 15 for my friends. It is worth of it :)

While starting off as the weakest nose by some margin, breathing for a very long time opens the profile up nicely. Less fruity and with a hint overripe/musty notes still somewhat an outlier in the line-up yet interesting. On the palate it can’t fully compete in terms of complexity and intensity, unfortunately. Still, this is very very nice and should be a delight if tasted standalone without its ever better brothers. Cheers Jakob for the set!

Courcelles rhums are simply in a class of their own...and this one proves it once again...the nose alone is so beguiling that you can enjoy it for hours. This floral and fruity blend is unique. A beautiful blend of fruit, barrel and light floral notes on the palate. The finish alternates with the familiar aromas plus a slight spiciness... Great

A captivating rum, like not from this world. 😋 I'm almost sure this rum will please everyone who tries it, even more so those unversed in rum than the connoisseurs. I think it's due to the 'only' 54% alcohol content, which results in a short finish. The advanced drinker might expect more long-lasting power here. But hey, the rum was distilled in 1972!! I'm curious how this great bottling compares to the one at 58%, the direct comparison is still pending. A mystery that this bottling is still available. I predict: Not for long. 😉

A great, versatile rhum. The name of the distillery and the age are of course a statement. I also had the predecessor from Rhumhouse in the glass, but that was a while ago. Intense, milk, caramel, spice, orange, vanilla Medicinal, iodine, pipe tobacco, lots of orange, fruit ice, raisins, saffron, complex, creamy, Indian korma, A great rum but not quite on the level of the predecessor for me.

9,2:On the nose, sugarcane, grassy with hay, floral with perfume, roasted wood notes like nuts, cocoa or fudge, burnt sugar, caramel, spicy with baking spices, cherries and citrus fruits, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, the molasses is herbaceous, various notes from roastedness arise, like pastry, banana fruitcake or perhaps candied banana, hints of allspice. 9,2:On the palate, the attack is delicious with flowery, grassy(hay) sugarcane/molasses tones, darker with black tea, buttery roasted wood notes like butterscotch, nuts, slightly smoky and spicy with allspice, vanilla, fruits like orange&mandarine, cherry and banana, perhaps some are candied, as on oxidation, our tasting buds are also attacked with candied caramel, later salty.The molasses becomes herbaceous, as roastedness also brings pastry, banana fruitcake, crunchy bread, so balanced and elegant rum. 9,1:The finish is long, dry&tannic, the molasses is now fresh, minty, grassy and perfumed, dark with licorice, pairing roasted wood notes, spicy and smoky, also quite dark and red fruits. A rum like a poem! The difference between Batch 1 & 2: Every import was bottled by the Swiss importer in 25-liter glass carboys - so the rum stays stable. The rum was delivered in 1000-liter plastic containers. The 2022 comes from a separate import with identical aging in oak barrels.

Blind Community Tasting Courcelles 1972 by Jakob Rum 2 lingers aromatically, feels thinner in the mouth at first and then also comes with pinching alcohol (in comparison). Fassnite. Also darker.

04.03.2023 Had a nice day with friends and old colleagues. I had the opportunity to taste a few very good whiskies at the event. Just like the other Courcelles I have tried, this one is also very smooth and elegant. Fruity with nice floral/flowery notes. The spices and caramel blend pretty well as does the roasted wood notes. The palate is oily and has a nice light coffee note. The finish is medium to long with a very light smoky note.

RumX Tasting with 4 x Courcelles 1972 (RX1196, RX13308, RX5448, RX2650): Many thanks to Jakob for the great opportunity. 4th place out of 4. A really very good rum on its own. Compared to the other three, however, it is somewhat more subtle in all areas.

RumX Community Tasting - Domaine de Courcelles (thanks to Jakob) Four bottlings in blind tasting, 2008, 2014 and 2022 from Rhum House and 2005 from Velier. We were quite unanimous about the winner of the evening, and how could it be otherwise, it was the not exactly cheap Velier bottling (fruity, floral, sweet). Then for me Rhum House 2014 (similar profile, more cherry than peach), closely followed by 2008 (very similar to 2014) and finally 2022 (less fruity in comparison, more spicy, slightly more alcoholic). But all are very close together, sometimes more and sometimes less notes of cherry and peach (iced tea), honey or honeycomb and lots of vanilla. Very good stuff.

My first Domaine de Courcelles. A wonderfully aromatic rum with hints of yellow fruits, beeswax, and some floral notes. For those who don't know the profile: I would describe it as a particularly successful Agricole. Very tasty.

An incredible piece that I taste with enthusiasm whenever I come across it. Unfortunately, it's a very hard-to-find piece. Divine, very old piece that shows its age in extreme smoothness. A round piece full of flavor!

Even from the small sample bottle comes a distinctly floral smell, almost perfumed. In the glass, cherry takes over first, followed by caramel and vanilla. The impression of spiced caramel chocolate... Beautifully oily and soft in the mouth, the alcohol is gentle. The vanilla and caramel flavors dominate, but there is also a technical note, difficult to classify. It goes in the direction of rubber, a bit like the smell in an empty glass. The finish is short, a little vanilla. In combination with the pleasant mouthfeel, this makes you want to take the next sip, the rum could be drunk quickly. All in all, a great rum. Easy to drink, intense aromas, delicious. Considering that it is the last spirit from a "lost distillery" and was bottled 53 years ago, it is surprising that the bottler still has it in stock. Incidentally, the empty glass emits a smell for ages that I know but don't quite recognize. Something along the lines of hotel, airport, vacation. Perhaps a plastic additive? Numero Duo. The nose is very different from nr1. Here wood, nut and toffee resonate. No more toffee on the palate, but nuts and something indefinable. Alcohol well integrated again. But not quite as round as nr1.

This rum first smells a bit floral, then it because like a creamy caramel (slightly salted) before the vanilla kicks in. The vanilla comes back in the flavor in combination with an agricole profile. It is all balanced and complex. A variety of flavors are presented in a calm but precise manner. The finish gives a bit more sweet and agricole markers, as well a bit of mint. This is a great dense sipper with many layers to discover. Wish I had a bottle instead of just a sample.
