After the Renaissance from the White Alligator barrel was already a real positive surprise, today again followed up with two interesting bottlings, one stored in the Bas-Armagnac barrel, the other in the noble red (Botrytis grapes sweet wine) barrel, again with super long fermentation, so that it comes on the nose again to a real aroma fireworks. Interestingly, however, both are quite different from the aroma profile. In the Armagnac Cask I have more grapes, the noble red goes more in the direction of yogurt and it also somehow still has something between storage room and cheese plate, which I like but quite 😅 On the palate both with tobacco, vanilla. Here, too, the noble red scores a little more. Conclusion: again two extreme bottlings that are really fun. Makes you want to try more!

You can still detect the base, which tastes a bit like gummy bears to me. This is joined by wood and Armagnac. A very successful combination!

Nose: Fermented red fruits, strawberry yogurt with some banana, old wood, grassy notes, oak, some tobacco. Palate: Strawberry yoghurt, pleasantly creamy, in small sips with nice roasted and cocoa notes with banana, alcohol is very well integrated. Finish: Again very short, creaminess lingers a little longer than the aromas. As with the others: Potential very high, I am very excited about future and more mature bottlings. I really like the basic strawberry yoghurt aroma, it comes across much more naturally than the chemically artificial Savanna HERR/Grand Arome. Delicious!

Renaissance brand/distillery founders and owners and wine enthusiasts Olivier Caen and Linya Chiou began their first experiments with juice, molasses, and pot stills back in 2013 (though reportedly on the verge of legality, as the laws for this activity are strict in Taiwan). However, the brand as such only came into existence (legally) in 2017. They are the first and currently still the only rum producers in Taiwan, although sugarcane cultivation has a long tradition on the island. However, Taiwanese people are more fond of whisky than rum. They produce small batch and single casks. By mid-2023, they will have produced about 60 casks. They are committed to transparency of origin and production. They do not use any flavourings or colourings, although Asian legislation on these things is not entirely accurate. The owners insist that the entire production process is done in Taiwan so that they have complete control over it, which is why they have so far refused to work with independent bottlers (this is no longer entirely true, however, as at least one collaboration has been with Rom de Luxe). They use two types of cane. The fermentation of the molasses or juice takes between 10 and 30 days. The rum is distilled twice, then put into new French or American oak casks, red or white wine casks, or casks of other spirits such as cognac, and the rum is aged in either type of cask or some combination. The rums are not diluted and are bottled at cask strength. Renaissance Bas-Armagnac finish, 2018, cask 18035, 63,2% Nose: very fresh, fresh exotic fruit, but there are also strawberries and apples, grass, flowers, vanilla, wood, I also have a feeling of light creaminess Taste: follows the aroma, very fruity and astringent, especially apples, then wood, but spiciness also comes through, long warm finish, the fruit and wood remain even in the empty glass
