It would be interesting to find out what the refill barrel #13 is all about. It definitely has some influence on the rum. On the nose, chestnuts, orange and red wine (or mulled wine) come to mind. Only with more standing time do light, dirty notes come to mind. Quite strong on the palate, barrel, toasted, nice warmth (thanks to the high ABV, which is well integrated), and a long finish. Many thanks for the sample to Belgium!

Nice & fruity, I like it a lot! 31/10/24: Some acidity in the nose, at a certain moment almost like a sherry finished whisky strangely. Nutty. I liked it better compared to RX12840.

A solid '98 Caroni that is not quite as tarry and dirty as many others from the vintage. Certainly also suitable for Caroni newcomers. Unfortunately, the price is modernly high.

8,9:On the nose, industrial, medicinal with rubber, tar, some glue, slightly dirty, sweet and round with roasted wood notes like caramel, dark chocolate, nutty, oily, red wine hints with citrus, dried fruits. On aeration, molasses is candied, vegetal with chesnuts, eucalyptus, thick, red fruits arise, bicycle tube joins. 8,7:On the palate, the attack is industrial with rubber and tar, intense, oily with toasted wood notes like caramel, pastry, biscuits, dark chocolate, nutty, spicy with cinnamon, warm, slightly salty, tannic, creamy with fermented notes, fruity with citrus, dried and red fruits, plums, a bit sour, as molasses is vegetal with chesnuts hints, dark with licorice. 8,8:The finish is long, dry&tannic, balanced, thick with candied caramel, toasted oak notes, charred and coffee, nuts, meaty, barrel impact is obvious, fruity with citrus fruits, prunes, dark with licorice, black tea..

#6806 17.05.2026 Relaxing after a little recovery walk after yesterdays gruelling hiking trail. Listening to some nice tracks on Spotify. Another 1998 Caroni with a hefty price tag. The rum is well balanced and the Caroni notes are more in the back and the fron has more fruits, medicinal and mint notes. Pretty nice and natural sweetness in the profile.

Good and very fruity Caroni. The typical dirty aroma stays in the background. Instead, you find notes of red wine/port wine in the nose and palate, which come forward through their sweetness and red fruits. Unusual, but good!

Since I've had several 1998 Caronis in the glass, this one somehow feels a bit different, I think. Maybe it was also because I accidentally gave it a longer time to breathe after pouring. But I liked it.

Quite an unusual 1998, i would have bet there was some sort of sweet wine cask involved, but alas, not according to the bottler. Very clean profile and pleasent nut notes plus sweet wine aromas. Quite somethin worth to try along the 1998 Caronis!
