Not perhaps the best version of a 98 caroni but still very good! I still think, however, that some paradise bottlings have gone a bit too far in aging and have an earthy sour part that is not always pleasant!

Very accessible nose.dirty notes, but also lots of vanilla. Balanced on the palate with perfectly integrated allohol. One of the absolute highlights of the 1998 vintage. But does not come close to the level of 1996.

Epic Velier Caroni Tasting 2023: Dreckiger 1998er Caroni mit klassischen Noten von Gummi, Teer sowie Menthol gepaart mit leichter Fruchtigkeit. Dazu Holz, dunkle Schokolade und dezente Karamellnoten, die gemeinsam mit der Würze für Bitterkeit und Ausdrucksstärke sorgen. Der beste 1998er Caroni, im Gesamtvergleich aber dennoch kein herausragendes Caroni-Release.

A very nice release with lighter Caroni notes, but they're there and that's what's important. You want those chewy rubber tires 😊 Nice balance with nice smoky wood notes and light fruit. Nice and oily on the palate and it draws really nice curtains.

I had the unique opportunity to compare this rum with other 98s yesterday. A very special, delicate rum. The nose is wonderful, balanced, caramel, bourbon. On the palate also of these notes, very round, mild, little dirty notes, alcohol very well integrated, filigree. Not without reason, this great rum was selected as one of the best of many casks by the Tasting Gang as a single cask...

Un nez évident de HTR Caroni et puis… je cherche la complexité qui justifie un single cask. Elle est là, mais timide et comme cachée. Une belle fraîcheur transparaît, comme un côté mentholé. La bouche est vive mais les arômes s’y bousculent sans harmonie. Le menthol donne une fraîcheur très agréable à l’ensemble et reste très longtemps en bouche soutenu par les fruits et l’atelier mécanique. Tout se met en place en finale, toujours dominée par la fraîcheur. Fraîcheur qui a sans doute agréablement surpris les dégustateurs (Tasting Gang) peut-être un peu alourdis par tant de rhums dégustés. Un beau rhum, mais pour moi clairement en dessous de l’Ultimatum RX5760 et du Boutique 61,5% RX12860 et… dix fois plus cher. Je tiens compte de ce fait pour ma note finale. Il faut avouer que le verre vide est splendide, harmonieux, complexe, frais et profond. Peut-être qu’une forte oxydation pourrait ici révéler des merveilles ? Merci Steffen pour le sample.

Un Caroni de style HTR mais au profil assez original. Si on ressent les notes empyreumatiques au nez, une fraîcheur florale et végétale est également présente. En bouche, l’attaque se repose sur les notes pétrolifères, boisées, fumées, florales et fruitées, mais l’ensemble se veut assez doux et réservé. On pouvait s’attendre à une explosivité en bouche, mais il n’en est rien. La finale est longue mais fine, avec pas mal d’hydrocarbures, de bois, d’épices et de fruits secs. Bien que ce Caroni soit cohérent avec son identité et plaisant, il manque de profondeur et d’impact pour marquer les esprits. Là encore, la qualité n’est pas au niveau placé par le prix.

There's an industrial/almost chemical kind of dryness rubbery like thing as a finish note. The taste is rather interesting however I feel sorry for anyone that paid more than 200euro for a bottle. It's not exceptional at all. Very interesting to try once but I will never need to drink this again. Thanks Stefan for the sample
