What surprises people here is the freshness — alongside the expected Caroni tar and rubber, tasters keep finding mint, green apple and florals. It's a lighter, more filigree take: oily on the palate, spicy grippy oak, vanilla and dried fruit on the finish. Several call it one of the best 1998s, though most agree it doesn't quite reach the 1996 sibling.

Epic Velier Caroni Tasting 2023: Dirty 1998 Caroni with classic notes of rubber, tar and menthol paired with light fruitiness. In addition, wood, dark chocolate and subtle caramel notes, which together with the spice provide bitterness and expressiveness. The best 1998 Caroni, but still not an outstanding Caroni release in an overall comparison.

There's an industrial/almost chemical kind of dryness rubbery like thing as a finish note. The taste is rather interesting however I feel sorry for anyone that paid more than 200euro for a bottle. It's not exceptional at all. Very interesting to try once but I will never need to drink this again. Thanks Stefan for the sample

Very accessible nose.dirty notes, but also lots of vanilla. Balanced on the palate with perfectly integrated allohol. One of the absolute highlights of the 1998 vintage. But does not come close to the level of 1996.

I had the unique opportunity to compare this rum with other 98s yesterday. A very special, delicate rum. The nose is wonderful, balanced, caramel, bourbon. On the palate also of these notes, very round, mild, little dirty notes, alcohol very well integrated, filigree. Not without reason, this great rum was selected as one of the best of many casks by the Tasting Gang as a single cask...

An obvious HTR Caroni nose and then... I look for the complexity that justifies a single cask. It's there, but shy and somewhat hidden. A beautiful freshness shines through, like a menthol side. The palate is lively but the aromas jostle without harmony. The menthol gives a very pleasant freshness to the whole and lingers for a long time in the mouth supported by fruits and mechanical workshop notes. Everything comes together in the finish, still dominated by freshness. Freshness that probably pleasantly surprised the tasters (Tasting Gang) perhaps a bit weighed down by so many rums tasted. A beautiful rum, but for me clearly below the Ultimatum RX5760 and the Boutique 61.5% RX12860 and... ten times more expensive. I take this into account for my final rating. I must admit the empty glass is splendid, harmonious, complex, fresh and deep. Maybe strong oxidation could reveal wonders here? Thanks Steffen for the sample.

An HTR-style Caroni with a rather original profile. Empyreumatic notes are evident on the nose, but a floral and vegetal freshness is also present. On the palate, the attack is based on petroleum, woody, smoky, floral and fruity notes, but the whole is rather soft and reserved. One might have expected explosiveness on the palate, but this is not the case. The finish is long but fine, with plenty of hydrocarbons, wood, spice and dried fruit. Although this Caroni is consistent with its identity and pleasing, it lacks the depth and impact to make a lasting impression. Once again, the quality is not up to the level set by the price.

Not perhaps the best version of a 98 caroni but still very good! I still think, however, that some paradise bottlings have gone a bit too far in aging and have an earthy sour part that is not always pleasant!

A very nice release with lighter Caroni notes, but they're there and that's what's important. You want those chewy rubber tires 😊 Nice balance with nice smoky wood notes and light fruit. Nice and oily on the palate and it draws really nice curtains.
