Here's the surprise: blind, plenty of tasters swear this Mauritius rum is a fruity Trinidad TDL. It's loaded with peach, dried apricot, blackcurrant and passion fruit, threaded with a cool eucalyptus-mint streak, dark chocolate and spicy oak. At 65.2% the alcohol is remarkably well tucked in. A couple of people find the finish a touch short or the wood too dominant, but most call it a genuinely fruity, characterful cask.

Ever since @crazyforgoodbooze got me hooked on Mauritius at the 11th GRF, I've been trying to get to know the country's rums better. With this one, I like the expressive blackcurrant note on the palate. A really pleasant rum, but with an unremarkable nose and a short finish that can't match the Grays from Perola (RX12865) from the same year. Update 2023-07-02: I must have had a bad day at the first tasting, only 82 points just doesn't do the rum justice. Now, at the second tasting, it has a super-long, fruity and woody finish. The impressive red rum now gets a well-deserved 86 points. Pretty good PLV for a single cask and still available, wonderful. Update 2024-03-16: Used as a benchmark rum against two other New Grove single casks and more than lives up to its role. In the meantime I have to say, even better than the 2009 bottling. Amazing Mauritius!

Again here a sensational representative of the Grays bottlings from Mauritius. I usually like the quality and flavor profile. Probably because of the mint/menthol. 😆 Often diluted bottlings are narrower in complexity. Here, thanks to the higher ABV, you get the full dose of what Mauritius has to offer.

Wow. Really awesome Mauritius and probably my new reference for the 2010 vintage. Red fruit compote and berries meet dark chocolate, vanilla, lots of barrel and menthol and mint notes. Slightly floral and very fruity finish. The alcohol integration is excellent!

So now also the two 2010s from Gunnar his legendary Mauritius Split in the glass. Both are a lot of fun. This one clearly has the higher ABV, but the alcohol is well integrated. Tastes a tick better to me.

This is my first Mauritius molasses session, after having tasted it yesterday. A direct comparison of the Savoir Faire 2009 for LMDW, the Savoir Faire 2010 for LMDW and the CDI 2009 13 yo for Perola. The 2010 is also quite fruity, but not as extroverted and accompanied by tobacco and integrated in spices (cloves & ginger). The peach is less juicy, sharing the stage with dried apricot. A very elegant nose. The 65.2% is fantastically integrated and brings a great intensity. It is also surprisingly fruity, lots of dried apricot, but also mango and peach. A fresh mint also joins in - blind I would certainly have thought it was a 2003 TDL. Although dried fruit dominates in the mouth, the finish brings another really juicy mango - that's great. The 2010 LMDW is the best of my three wines, the intensity in the mouth more than makes up for the restraint on the nose. Alcohol integration, balance, complexity all top. The 2009 is very, very close on its heels. The old apricot and the greater complexity are particularly convincing here, but the slight bite costs a few points. Perhaps the difference is more a matter of form on the day than taste. The CDI is already very good, but falls a little short. It is lighter and therefore too far on the fruity side.

A great discovery, this New Grove full proof. It's a little too intense for me and I would have appreciated a reduction, but I really enjoyed this compote of young woody fruits with a touch of eucalyptus. Surprising, in a good way. One could easily think of a TDL. Edit: I found it more monotonous on a second tasting. I'll have to take more time next time.

8,8:On the nose, the first attack on our nosetrils is very pleasant with dried, red, yellow fruits like cherry, orange, peach, dried apricot, raisin.The wood is roasted, spicy with nuts, caramel and vanilla. On aeration, the molasses is stronger, as we notice some vegetal, tobacco notes. We have here very round, balanced 1st stage of our tasting. 8,6:On the palate, the attack is intense, minty, but delicious with spicy, roasted wood and red, yellow fruits.The woody notes are caramel, dark chocolate, As it settles down, the molasses perhaps brings eucalyptus.The fruits are now more dried with raisins, as the wood notes like nuts, vanilla, pepper more obvious, we might also notice some ginger. Resting doesn't help this rum, as some unpleasant rubber, wax notes imbalance very round rum. Our patience is rewarded with balancing tropical fruit notes like passion fruit, mango and with flowery touch. 8,2:The finish is quite imbalanced with strong bitterness, but long with very dry, spicy and roasted wood.There are more pleasant notes of currants, dried apricots and banana, as the molasses is minty, fresh, floral. Alcohol integration not so good.

This bottling, although with higher alcohol content, is not quite as rich in aromas as the comparable Perola! Here I miss a bit the complexity with the distinctive mint and fruit aromas! Spice and wood are in the foreground here.

The two New Grove from LMDW in comparison, vintages 2009 and 2010. The 2010 is a very tasty drop, somewhat similar to early TDLs, with currants and a light mint note. Dark chocolate and quite a bit of wood, but for my taste not too woody yet. On the nose I find the 2009 perhaps a bit better, on the palate I tend to the 2010, also because it brings more power. Overall I tend more to the 2010.

Compared to the LMDW 2009, the 2010 nose has significantly more roasted aromas, but otherwise similar: insanely fruity, some caramel, spice, wood. Above all: very vegetal, from floral to earthy all included. Overall conclusion very good, price also reasonable. Clear recommendation.

On the train ride somewhere between Magdeburg and Hamburg. Had a nice New Grove sample with me; now I have time and peace. The single casks from New Grove are always top class... Nose: very floral-fruity and finely spicy. Apricot with kiwi, gooseberry and passion fruit, underlined with a fine violet note (also reminds me slightly of soap). Plus soft vanilla and caramel towards cream toffee. At the very back I also find a very slight smoke. Fantastic and round, sweet-sour-fruity nose. 8.9 Palate: strong, concentrated. Sweet-sour fruit towards kiwi, gooseberry and currant, plus apricot and tropical passion fruit. Slightly orangey-bitter towards kumquat. Now a distinct mint note comes in, which wonderfully fits the spicy wood aroma. The 65% demand something at the start but are well integrated. Great taste, 8.8

Wonderfully fruity nose with lots of peach, apricot and vanilla. A bit of black tea. Slightly alcoholic on the nose. On the palate lots of peach and apricot. Nice mint notes, black tea and caramel.

👃 blend of warm spices, vanilla and nougat. Empyreumatic notes of roasted hazelnuts, dark chocolate and burnt wood. Candied fruit on blood orange, stewed fruit on persimmon and a note of blackcurrant appear with oxidation. Finally, an encalyptus-like herbaceous freshness. Beautifully intense aromas despite excellent alcohol integration. 😋 An intense, lively flavor combining peppermint and fresh currants. In fact, all sorts of menthol notes, eucalyptus, candy mint, vicks vaporub... The wood is slightly astringent. The level of freshness 🥶 is at its peak. The finish gives way to slightly caramelized vanilla. ⛳ Quite short on After Eight confectionery, dark chocolate and fresh mint. Then dried herbs on a blond tobacco side. I also detect a non-dominant note of lychee. The finish is too short for the intensity and relative complexity of the nose and palate. It doesn't reach 89-90/100. Nevertheless, this single cask remains a very good representative of Mauritius and New Grove.

It was one of my main highlights from Whisky Live 2022. I can understand why with this tasting. Nose is very well balanced between wood, spices, round notes and fruits. Palate is on another level with fruits overload which makes it extremely funky. A very strong selection from LMDW 🥰

Also very tasty. Last rum for today. Thanks Gunnar, really tasty, but personally a bit too bitter for me. Otherwise caramel, fruity and vanilla on the nose, on the palate then dark chocolate comes in. Overall very balanced and tasty.

Tasted together with New Grove Savoir Faire LMDW 2009/ RX2744 and New Grove Savoir Faire LMDW 2010 / RX13444. Nose: The Savoir Faire 2012 immediately offers a great fruit compote, peach, passion fruit and mirabelle. For me, the Savoir Faire 2009 has fruits that are a bit lighter and more restrained. The Savoir Faire 2010 is somewhere between the other two for me. Palate: Besides currant, peach and passion fruit, I find a slight mint and some Tic Tac Wintergreen in the 2012. This Tic Tac Wintergreen flavor then gradually comes to the forefront and says goodbye in a long finish together with some currant. The alcohol is very well integrated, which makes this rum quite easy to drink combined with the fruitiness. A bit of water makes it even more drinkable, but it doesn't open up much further. A really nice fruity, easy-drinking rum with a great range of aromas. If it were a bit more complex, the rating would be even higher. The Savoir Faire 2009 is similarly fruity, but the aromas go slightly in a different direction. I don't find currant and Tic Tac Wintergreen here, but rather some strawberry and very slight caramel. Overall, the 2009 seems a bit more classic or more in the direction of Spanish style in direct comparison, without drifting too much that way. The fruitiness is simply a bit more settled and restrained. With a bit of water, it opens up a bit more and the caramel note becomes clearer. The Savoir Faire 2010 goes a bit more towards the 2012 in terms of fruitiness and lies between 2012 and 2009 for me. The Tic Tac Wintergreen moment can be slightly guessed in the background, with peach and light fruits in the foreground. This makes the 2010 the most similar to a TDL of the three for me, although it lacks the mint or herbaceousness. All three rums are quite astringent in the finish. Despite the slight differences, all three rums are on the same high level for me. Each 87 points.

A well-stocked fruit salad bowl from start to finish! Really tasty. The alcohol is barely perceptible on the nose and superbly integrated on the palate. I found the previous one a little too sweet for my taste, but this one is perfect.

Nose Round, cinnamon, light wood, light earthy, light orange, light caramel, dried fruit, light anise. Palate Light wood, faint smoke, peppery, cinnamon, light nutmeg, light herbal, faint mint, light orange. Finish Long and warm, peppery, wood, light roasted, light anise, light caramel, light mint. The bottlings from Grays are certainly not the most complex, but I just love this pronounced peach iced tea note with some mint and spices. The alcohol is perfectly integrated. Really great bottling.

INCREDIBLE! to think that I paid 70€ for a bottle, if I'd known, I'd have bought 6... You don't know whether you're in Mauritius or on a TDL, fruit and menthol accompany vanilla caramel and chocolate on a background of wood and spices. Splendid.

First of all, thanks to Gunnar, who brought me to this blatant rum 🤤 You can probably be really happy somewhere that many people simply don't have Mauritius on their radar. This rum has the fruitiness, complexity and woody notes of a very good 2002/3 T.D.L. together with the typical New Grove note. The finish is very long, floral, fruity, a little leather, umami, just really cool stuff, tastes damn good to me - a little astringent at the back, cinnamon ? The alcohol is really extremely well integrated - around 65% and yet I don't notice it at all.

One of my first Mauritius bottlings and immediately such a beast. The nose is quite restrained at first, but opens up over time becoming first floral then woodier. On the tongue it initially hits relatively sweet, then develops woody notes and aromas of vanilla, milk chocolate and dried fruits, strong spices like allspice. Towards the end it becomes cool, like menthol and mint.

Truly a remarkable product. Vanilla nose and quite delicate. On the palate it releases all its aromas. Apricot and honey above all. A fresh rum but with great character. I hadn’t tasted New Grove products before, and after this I will definitely try others.

Just tasted this rum for the second time. Overall good, but quite fresh or grassy for my taste. For the high alcohol content, unfortunately a bit flat, so my rating is probably lower than the rest of the community.

On the nose a nice fresh note with a hint of peach. On the palate this peach meets an aromatic mint. The drop has a really great intensity and a nice complexity. Bravo.

A beautiful fruit salad from Mauritius with an intense palate that makes the fruits fresher, mentholated and a slightly salty side like TDL. The finish is quite long. Very good New Grove.

I tasted this rum blind and initially thought of TDL because of the slight eucalyptus and mint hints, which I really like. I don't find it quite convincing on the nose but it brings a lot of joy on the palate.

Another New Grove. Looks very unfiltered and very red. Thick and spicy. Like a phat port or madeira wine. Some classic NG freshness and eucalyptus. A bit dirty. More fresh in taste. Lots of berries (not unlike early 00s Trinidad) and I mean lots! It conquers the whole palate. Awesome. Love it. I'm a NG fanboy. This might be a bit unbalanced and freakely fruity, somehow hinting toward a Bellevue '98 or Caroni, but its definitely a cool juice. Highly recommended.

Bottle. This is exactly how I like my rum. A powerful fruit cocktail. Full of interesting aromas. The only thing that slightly detracts is that after 2 drams the taste starts to become a bit artificial and the tropical fruits get a bit perfumed. But what a rum. You can't help but close your eyes and enjoy every moment. Imagine yourself on vacation on the beach being served cocktails with good music. Tropical at the level of aged Bushmills. Only about a tenth of the price. In short, highly recommended plus.

Ok. The nose still rather "classic with lots of caramel and peach tea," the palate suddenly very intense and complex. Nice mix of fruit, wood and eucalyptus. Nicely dry on the finish. Certainly quite a unique profile. I like it.

Blind tasting. Very fruity rum. Very well-integrated alcohol (very surprised to see 65%!). Well-balanced, with distinctive aromas. A hint of lychee hovers throughout, which is very pleasant. The alcohol remains very high, resulting in a very intense rum that can seem nauseating.

Yellow fruit on the nose, peach, vanilla, a touch of red fruit. The palate is more red-fruit oriented, with a nice woodiness, a profile close to a very fruity TDL, a little burnt caramel on the finish, it's very good.

one shouldn’t do a tasting in the later stage of a Covid infection. I smell caramel, hint of chocolate and notes from the cask. Some herbs maybe. On the palate, the ABV is quite dominant on the first sip. After having the rum rested for a while, it discloses a subtle fruitiness of red fruits, caramel and cacao, the latter continues to the finish. Nice rum with bit too much ABV.

Great rum! An incredibly fine cassis note, a bit of glue on the nose. A fine honey note makes this very round. Alcohol noticeable but still decently integrated! Highly recommended! A beast!

Color: chestnut Smell: Sweet with some vanilla, caramel and fruit. Alcoholic, but I think it’s still moderate on the nose. Taste: Sweet in the mouth but also very alcoholic and sharp. When swallowing sweet after caramel and passion fruit. Spicy-alcoholic with some wood. Finish: Medium length, alcoholic warming and spicy-woody with some toffee. In the aftertaste woody with camphor and dry. Conclusion: The passion fruit excites me. I like the distillery, not least because I was there.

What a lovely Grays. You really get a superb Cask with a lot of fruity Demerara Vibes and some TDL minty goodnes. My gosh. If only they all were like that... Really i think that is something nice to really be on the lookout sometime soon!
