Isautier Antoinette - Rhum Vieux 14 Ans D'Age 2004
Most people land in the "very good but demanding" camp on this Réunion 14-year-old. The nose wins everyone over — toasted oak, dried apricot, cocoa, vanilla, spice — but the palate hits a wall of wood first, with menthol and a bitter, medicinal edge before the fruit shows. One taster nailed it: "Oaky, medicinal yet very fresh." Rich, dry, and a bit monolithic.

Aggregated from 87 community reviews.
Oak-heavy, dry Réunion sipper with a fruity nose Strong scores and real love for the nose and oak, but several find the 55% a touch rough and the palate too dry, bitter and wood-heavy to fully match the aromas.

Very nice bottling 👌🏻 A great mix of wood, fruits, roasted aromas, a bit of phenol and perfect integrated ABV makes this rum a very nice daily sipper. Update: I noticed some cool notes of peaches during the finish 😎

A promising profile in itself with dark caramel, chocolate and vanilla sweetness, pepper, nougat, dried fruit, citrus freshness and fine spices ranging from pepper to light licorice in the finish. Unfortunately, the taste picture is overshadowed by the somewhat too rough alcohol, which is why the rum in direct comparison with other Isautier bottlings of the early 2000s for me unfortunately falls somewhat behind.

Nice discovery!

Orange, bitter orange, a bit of cookie dough, cocoa, vanilla, and a little mint with lots of wood. In the finish, the menthol, orange peel, and a bit of strong, slightly burnt coffee come through. It drinks really well and is super smooth. Overall, though, it's a bit too dry and earthy for me.

A very good rum from Isautier, which comes in a unique triangular bottle. Very roasty and woody nose, underlined by fruits, spices, chocolate and caramel. On the palate also spicy, woody, smoky, roasty, bitter and a bit dirty. Price is okay and I like when distilleries release under their own flag.

#4008 Now we're getting somewhere. Slightly darker than the Alfred and motte power in the profile. Intense and fruity with roasted wood and spices. Draws really nice curtains in the glass and the empty glass has nice ginger and smoke. Price to quality is very good. This is the last one for today. Tomorrow I'll continue with the next 3-4 releases.

Sweet and spicy at the same time. I like Antoinette extraordinarily well. 😍

More gourmand than Apolonnie. A touch of vanilla. Less woody. Better-integrated alcohol. Pleasantly pastry-like. Sensitive bitterness. Edit: it's good. But it's not the type of rum that thrills me.

I've already had some very good Isautier in my glass and am also looking forward to this blend. Nose: full-bodied, balanced, delicious. Spicy, woody and fruity. At first, a tart, fresh fruity note stands out positively. Gooseberry with blackcurrant and lemon with orange. This is followed by vanilla and fine mace. Framed by totally pleasant wood and a light caramel-cocoa sweetness. A little violet at the back. Everything fits together very well. 8,6 Palate: strongly woody and spicy. Salty-bitter and pepper at the beginning, even seems slightly banished. Hardly any fruit, most likely lemon zest. Instead nutty with mocha, nutmeg and light cardamom. The violet comes back on the finish. This dry and woody palate is very different from what the nose suggests. Clearly too much for me. 7.6

I like the Isautier molasses rums. Wonderful dry wood flavors, nice sweet finish, balanced drinking strength.
Review by Chrischi78
A promising start: The nose is full-bodied, balanced and tasty – spicy-woody with fruity notes of gooseberry, currant, lemon and orange, accompanied by vanilla, nutmeg blossom and fine caramel-cocoa sweetness. Unfortunately the palate disappoints: initially very sweet, then strongly woody-spicy, salty-bitter with pepper and almost burnt impression. Hardly any fruit, but nuts, mocha and nutmeg, with a slight cardamom.

8,4:On the nose, toasted oak with pastry, leather, cocoa, spicy, fresh sugarcane, herbaceous, flowery, earthy with tobacco, dried apricots, raisins, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, fermented, perhaps candied banana is out, caramel, roasted nuts and coffee, spicy vanilla and allspice, fresh tea. 8,2:On the palate, the attack is slightly bitter, medicinal, a bit alcoholic with sugarcane, candied, herbaceous, flowery, mineral, earthy with tobacco, dark with black tea, roasted wood notes like cocoa, perhaps chocolate, slightly burnt, coffee, leather, pastry, caramel, spicy with vanilla and allspice, a bit resinous, salty. The fruits are tropical with banana, dried with raisins and apricots, berries, green fruits and perhaps plums. 8:The finish is medium long, rather too dry, tannic with toasted, slightly burnt oak notes, medicinal with hints of menthol, fruity with citrus, dried abd tropical fruits, as the cane is rather weak, grassy, vegetal, earthy.

Antoinette: woody with vanilla, somewhat bitter, sweet on the finish. Not particularly complex. A woody easy sipper. The finish is medium-length and the best part of the rum. Apollonie: softer, also sweet, with a vegetal and herbal touch. Overall more complex, tasty. Elise: This one has the most intense nose so far, which continues on the palate. Here the dark and red fruits come out more clearly than in the previously tasted ones. Also tasty. Aventurier: this is really nothing. Reminds more of a young Foursquare. Poorly integrated alcohol. aventurier bdf: almost 80% abv. Sounds promising, but here it shows comparatively tame and boring. The alcohol is well integrated, but unfortunately no aroma spectacle. Expected more here. Audacieux bdf: Better, the 73% abv are very well integrated, oily, warm, woody with dark fruits on the palate. The finish disappoints. The tasting was a sobering experience, maybe I just have too high expectations when I see Isautier. My favorites remain by a large margin the bottlings from Velier and Swell.

Compared to the 2006, I found the nose even more promising - on the palate, unfortunately, it falls a bit. Not really round, unbalanced, more barrel influence, somewhat bitter, alcohol not so well integrated.
Review by Boletus
With every minute in the glass that passes, the scent of this oak-forward rum becomes more harmonious and multi-layered. Upon arrival in the mouth, however, there is initially a massive oak wall with menthol polish notes, which you have to bite through to reach the quite harmonious mix of fruits, dark barrel aromas, and spices. Really good and nicely complex! If only the “Antoinette” weren’t so exhausting and didn’t have that subtle aftertaste of herbal bitters (especially wormwood and sage), then I would like it even more.
Review by Skyfly
For me, the rum with the most pronounced tobacco aromas so far, which very much resemble fresh rolling tobacco. Alongside, a medley of fruits like peach and cherry, as well as a strong cask influence with wood, spices, and chocolate.
Review by Santo
Very floral, bitter orange marmalade, a bit too woody and earthy with poorly integrated alcohol. Second disappointing tasting.
Review by Agricoler
A very tasty representative of La Reunion. The only disturbing thing here is the slightly biting alcohol. Otherwise, very nice notes of oak and dried fruit. Very tasty with plenty of power.

A superb product from Isautier. Woody (but just the right amount), spicy and cocoa.

The rum takes you on a taste journey that starts with freshly cut cane and reveals older layers on the palate as you explore further. Good rum that is well aged.

My first Isautier (as far as I can remember). Did some research a while back and scored this. Although its a molasses rum it has all the characteristics of a sugarcane juice rum. Freshness. French oak. Cherry. Taste: french when it comes in. Long and dry finish. More red fruits. Port. Dry red wine. Very very dry. I like it. Armagnac. Quity woody. Astringent. Very agricole still. Unique juice. Another one to try again soon.

Notes taken at Rhum Fest 2024, quick notes and a somewhat heavy palate, sorry :) Here we have: the best of the range in my opinion. A rum focused on fruits, with beautiful woodiness. Finish: balanced, between fruit & wood, with a bit of leather. I really liked it!
Review by Fuwi
A very pleasant bottling that balances nicely between a light, non-sticky sweetness and spicy wood aromas. Dark fruits with a slightly bitter touch and a cooling note towards menthol.
Review by Djehey
Retasted at the rum fest. Overall doesn't seem very elegant to me but less woody and more gourmand than during my first try. First tasting (samples) Honestly not convinced. Nose rather pleasant but palate too woody and earthy... a bitterness and a taste of bad medicine come out. Taste persists moderately in the finish. Note: my taste might be disturbed (little cold), since having drunk another rum I know, it seemed quite different from usual...
Review by Double Barrel
It's woody (in the most noble way), nutty and a bit fruity. Palate delivers what the nose promised. A tad monolithic but very well made and very pleasurable. A good surprise for me who had a bad image from Isautier with their rhum arrangés range sold in supermarkets here in France. That inspires me 2 thoughts : - I'd like to be offered a bottle as it is a bit pricey. - I will have a look for the other Isautier from now.
Review by Filip Šikula
I consider this triangular series from Isautier very successful. Here on the nose lots of fruit, chocolate and spices. On the palate a sweet load of fruit, caramel and pleasant warmth of 55% alcohol. A nice piece for a good price.
Review by Palo - V Poháriku
This rum left a strong impression with its full and intense flavor profile, accompanied by a nearly oily texture. The nose reveals layers of burnt wood, vanilla, apricot and pear. On the palate, dark chocolate and roasted notes meld with fruity undertones like apricot and cherry compot, creating a truly rich and satisfying experience. The finish brings a fresh twist, with an almost agricole-like quality that surprises, given it’s not cane juice based. Truly a memorable and enjoyable rum.
Review by Barnagricole
Interesting nose of wood, spices, an empyreumatic side, hydrocarbons and burnt rubber. On the palate, unfortunately little balance, the rubber and bakelite side takes over too much and the astringency shows a lack of oxidation of the tannins.
Review by Léo Delek
A wood well present with spices, a roasted side with coffee and citrus. Nice but alcohol quite present but with a nice length

Vintage 2004. With 8.6 out of 10, it belongs to the better ones that have come into my glass.
Review by Thibault
A beautiful explosion of spices on the palate.
Review by Ivo Höfner
A fantastic nose - great composition of wood, fruit & roasted aromas as well as a subtle sweetness. You could smell it forever & the tannins from the French oak come out really nicely. On the palate, it shows its other, wild, intense side, again with aromas from the oak - first a bit biting, but very quickly balanced and with great aromatic diversity. Oak, roasted aromas & a bit of fruit. Stays nicely long in the mouth & nose present. Nice thing - for lovers of European/French oak maybe even a revelation.

A very pleasant expression. You can really feel the influence of the cognac cask. Well balanced, complex.
