T.D.L Flensburg Rum Company Sea Shepherd (Barracuda Single Cask) 2002
Most tasters land on "very good but no sensation" for this 2002 T.D.L. The nose wins people over — currants, sour cherry, kiwi and that signature mint. Then the palate surprises everyone: at 61.4% the alcohol vanishes, and several call it dangerously smooth but a touch thin and watery. Fans of bright, herbal Trinidad rum find plenty to like; those chasing the heavier RA-style intensity may miss it.

Summarized by AI from community reviews.
Minty Trinidad, smooth but surprisingly light A rounded, minty Trinidad with fruit on the nose and iodine-salt notes on the palate. Loved for its ghostly ABV integration, but many find it too light and slightly one-note.

A blind purchase that was absolutely worth it! Yes, I have to say I'm even slightly euphoric - what a great rum! While it is still relatively restrained on the nose (and remains so), the fat mint aromas really come into their own on the palate, but not as "light" as with the two RAs of the last two years, but somehow "darker", more bitter, drier - almost as if a good Monymusk had also set its accents here. The alcohol is dosed just right to bring out the aromas perfectly. Yes, this rum is definitely a T.D.L., and one of the really good kind - I'll go one better: for me, it's the best I've ever drunk - right after the legendary CDI (RX944)! 😊 Predicate: lip-smacking. 😋 Chapeau, FRC! 👍 Update 2023-07-21: Well, now the demystification that some have been waiting for. 🤷 Tasting it again today, I can - apart from the mint and the slight euphoria - feel the same way I did back then. The only difference is that I wouldn't put everything on such a high level now - apart from the alcohol, which is incredibly well integrated for over 60%. So, only a slight disenchantment, not a total one. But now the rum seems to have been put into perspective. It's a good one. Oh well, tasted against the new RA T.D.L (RX15401). It doesn't stand a chance against it, it's clearly superior in all respects. Update 2023-10-14: Blue hour, the second: Blind crosstasting with the T.D.L 2002 from Cadenhead's (RX16680). Today, the differences between the two compared rums are quite big. One is pleasantly minty and later a little smoky, the other musty and chalky with poorly integrated alcohol. I liked the former much better. I thought it was the FRC that I had already tasted several times - and was wrong after the dissolution. I see the Cadenhead's as a solid 2002 T.D.L in the lower midfield, 85 points. Unfortunately, the difference on the nose and palate (and the smell of the emptied glass! 😊) means that I have to downgrade the FRC again, from 85 to 81 points.

Nice tasty TDL but I don't quite understand the hype around it... Nice mint kiwi citrus wood combo only for me personally a bit too thin overall (although it has barrel strength it seems watery?!) and also has too much wood overall... I search in vain for the "funk" or power that other cask strength TDLs have here... But it's good to drink and the price was more than fair! Somehow very short finish and a bit boring overall.

Nose: intense with fruits, herbs and some dirty notes. Holds up to other early 2000s TDL bottlings. Palate: now this is really suprising… alcohol is almost not noticeable, making this a very smooth experience. While it is very pleasant, I miss quite a bit intensity which the nose implicates (and I‘m used to in good TDLs). This is a really odd one… not a bad, but very unexpected tasting experience.

Preis-Leistung: ok

I go back on my appreciation a few months later and go up two points. In the end I like this TDL very much. Typical of the best the distillery produces, but it is not too minty unlike other bottlings. I find this one well balanced and very pleasant to drink. The alcohol stings a bit but nothing insurmountable.

Really good TDL, what I especially like is that it's not too herbal! Nicely balanced and alcohol well integrated. For me, actually the best of the new FRC series.

I had to rip it open right away...Nose: wow, fresh, fruity, intense, delicious and very round. The alcohol does not sting at all. I find a whole mix of tart sweet fruits. Gooseberry, currant, sour cherry and kiwi, but also kumquat and quince. The whole backed with a distinct mint note and some fine vinegar. There is also a sweetness of caramelized sugar, as on crème brulet with a squeeze of lemon. Slightly woody and metallic at the same time with some solvent and smoke.Palate: intense and delicious. Initially bitter and salty, then immediately fresh mint, which immediately gives way to lemon zest and kumquat. Behind it metallic with some iodine. Gooseberry and mint again at length.Very round and good TDL, wonderfully integrated alcohol. 👍👍

#4595 02.02.2024 Relaxing at home while preparing for a triple tasting next week, phew that's going to be a tough one. This is a pretty good rum with pretty good ABV integration. Medium fruity with some medicinal notes. Nose Fresh, light wood, faint roasted, fruity, light caramel, mint, light medicinal notes. Palate Light wood, faint roasted, cherry, medium spicy, light herbs, light medicinal, cherry, mint. Finish Medium long, wood, light roasted, fruits, light herbs, mint. The empty glass has some mint, faint tar and ginger.
Review by Thunderbird
The nose is very fruity, with currant and cherry! Fresh mint and a bit metallic join in! Very captivating nose! The palate is a bit surprising! 61.4% Alc.!? I somehow can't believe it! Extremely light and thin, the alcohol is barely noticeable! It feels rather diluted! The flavor aromas are still very intense and complex! Fruit, spices, young wood... very tasty The finish is medium length and very pleasant! It's a very good TDL, but for me it's too gentle! I would rather call it everybody's darling.

Tasted directly after the Nobilis TDL 2001. Certainly not an easy comparison, since the vintages are very different, but still somehow exciting for me. The Barracuda shows me very round and harmonious, without special corners and edges but overall just very tasty. While I like rums that have some unique selling point, I can't really find that with this bottling. Still, I like it a lot, as it also delivers a typical Trinidad character, but less explicit flavors stand out, as is the case with the 2001 bottlings. Here, fruit and spice, dirt and wood, and sweetness and depth just alternate to create an incredibly rounded profile. I like it very much!
Review by TheRhumhoe
A TDL with lots of charm. The nose is exuberant on menthol and floral notes that refresh the nostrils, then filled with all kinds of fruits: cherry, redcurrant, blackcurrant, peach and passion fruit form a fabulous fruit cocktail on the aromatic level. You feel some roasted and caramelized woody touches as well as spices (chili, vanilla, pepper) that complete this rich and elegant profile. The attack on the palate is very intense with lots of menthol and floral notes. The fruits are abundant, especially peach, blackcurrant, kumquat and redcurrant. However, there is a spicy and salty side that rises on the palate, as well as roasted and slightly bitter wood that complicates the profile. The whole is delicious, coherent and elegant. The alcohol is very well integrated. The finish, moderately long, reshuffles the cards by gaining bitterness, spicy and salty notes as well as wood. The profile becomes more astringent. The freshness of menthol is still there, but a bit more herbal. The exotic fruits are more succinct. A very nice evolving TDL that has the merit of offering an excellent quality/price ratio.
Review by Johannes
Once again a very good representative of the special 2001-2003 vintages from TDL with the typical mint note! Alcohol fantastically integrated!
Review by LukaŽiga
8,5:On the nose, kiwi, citrus fruits, some currants, roasted wood notes with caramelized nuts, spicy, smoky, minty molasses, bump into our nosetrils, strong. On aeration, fresh fruits like tropical fruits, kumquat, arise, metallic patina and industrial tones like tar, rubber. 8,6:On the palate, the attack is quite strong with iodine, minty molasses, sap, roasted wood notes like nuts, confectionery and fudge, smoky and spicy, fruity with citrus fruits and currants. On oxidation, briny olive is out, some rubber. 8,5:The finish is long, dry&tannic, slightly medicinal, still briny, the molasses is minty, fresh with tea, the wood roasted with pastry, nuts, as the fruits are tropical with kiwi snd passion fruit, citrus fruits..

Today a small TDL tasting, with RX13557, RX 944, RX15670, RX 19670, RX15565 and RX20525. Let's start with the Barracuda... Alcohol well integrated, almost mild. After longer time in the glass, the fruit on the nose comes out much better, cherry and currant. Also mint is there. On the palate comes a slightly salty note. Very tasty for the price and the best bottling from the Sea Shepherd range.
Review by Leo Krüper
Solid TDL from the 2001/2002 batch. Reminds me of a light Caroni, but the alcohol is a bit too sharp for me.
Review by Rene Pfeiffer
Very pleasant TDL. More rounded than others, but less intense. I like.
Review by Timo Groeger
And then yesterday there was also a T.D.L. You know one, you know them all, you might almost say :) Of course, the mint is the standout feature of this rum, but there's also a bit of wood and some spice.
Review by TheJackDrop
Well, I saw and read the comments before starting it, and I have to say I'm perplexed. It's ultra good on the nose and palate, the finish maybe a bit light but oily and pleasant. I don't give more than 8.5 because for me the menthol is a bit heavy and I prefer it fresh.
Review by Alexander Rasch
The nose is very nice, if a bit restrained. I like the mix of fruit and mint. On the palate, this rum is peculiar. I've never had a rum with such well-integrated alcohol. The over 60% is not noticeable. I'm drinking this rum over the top like 45%. The smoothness is awesome, but the rum somehow manages to seem thin at the same time. The classic TDL notes are there. But compared with the RA TDL 2002 somewhat restrained. Since I like it but rather something edgier and for me the RA the clear winner.
Review by Christian Rudt
Smell is really promising. Aromas are very pleasant that is cuddle hour for the nose. Fruity spicy great mixture you can smell it forever. On the palate, however, clearly different. Relatively bitter and less intense than other TDL. Nevertheless, still a very good rum. Especially this nose.😄Nose 90 Palate 80I give good 84.

Beautiful matte bottle under 100 euros. You can smell the alcohol but very drinkable. I recommend it even to beginner rum drinkers for discovering new flavors. Mint from TDL is an unmistakable taste that you will never get tired of.
Review by Cinci
In the nose mint, fruit and wood. On the palate the mint seems to take over completely, supported by fresh wood. The alcohol is very well integrated. For me such a mint dominance was new - but a pleasant experience.
Review by Filip Šikula
Tasting calendar of Pavel Špaček vol. 4 Another of the very, very intense mint T.D.L. Very pleasant profile already on the nose. Besides earthy mint tones, there are also technical hints. In the mouth the mint shows up at 200%, the technical notes recede, the wood recedes, but that mint is great. Perfectly integrated alcohol. Great.
Review by Wernie
Since the two RA-TDLs I am a real fan Trinidas Rums.😍 Of course a blind purchase, before a sample is available, this product is already sold out. 🙈 The nose detects red fruits, plus lots of mint and a subtle wood note. But what's going on the palate, where's the alcohol, has anyone checked that? Hard to believe. It is very metallic, I taste menthol, iodine, barrel and roasted aromas. At the end comes a lot of wood, slightly bitter, salt and a little herbaceous. Conclusion: a good TDL, but for me too thin, I miss the heavy dirty of the RAs.Where is the alcohol?🤷♂️
Review by Buddudharma
Good aroma spectrum similar to other TDLs of this time, but in the mouth with too little intensity and a clearly too watery consistency.
Review by Mirco
Very lively mint note combined with blackcurrants and sweet-sour cherry shape the profile. The alcohol is impressively well integrated, the texture feels surprisingly smooth. On the palate, mint, spice, salty and slightly iodine notes connect with a fine wood influence. Elegant, accessible and yet complex, especially for lovers of light, herb-based T.D.L. profiles a nice discovery.
Review by martin slezák
Color golden Aroma mint, spice, green apple, mango Taste mint, iodine, spice, technical notes, apple Finish mint, wood medium long I would estimate the alcohol at 50% ABV
Review by Roman Lelek
In the nose I felt stewed fruit, apricots, wood and a bit musty, also a bit of grass. On the palate fruit like blackberries, strawberries, currants... and at the end mint... and a bit technical... the rum surprised me a bit with its fullness and complexity, each tasting opened a new palette of flavors... and for me a great finish, even a while after swallowing the rum was felt on the palate.
Review by Michal S
Very minty Trinidad, with a bit of fruitiness in the nose that doesn't really come through in the taste. On the palate, salty and iodine notes appear, overall an OK rum.

Tasted at GRF2025 The best from the series. My appreciation for Trinidad is evolving.
