Matusalem Gran Reserva Solera 23 Años
Newcomers and anyone after an easy evening pour will get on with this Dominican solera. Expect caramel, vanilla, honey and toasted wood, with a surprisingly dry, peppery edge on the finish. Most call it a smooth daily sipper that's a clear step up from the 15-year, though several note it stays gentle and never gets very complex for its age.

How does Matusalem Gran Reserva Solera 23 Años taste?
Aggregated from 167 community reviews.
Easy, sweet caramel-vanilla daily sipper A comfortable, sweetish everyday sipper most people enjoy — caramel, vanilla and wood throughout. The common gripe: not much depth or evolution for 23 years, and the finish runs short.

8:On the nose, this rum begins with light caramel, butterscotch. Molasses and toasted wood then descend to deeper notes. Then tobacco and vanilla add a little variety to the profile. On the nose it is a very sweet, light rum, smooth and velvety. Aeration won't alter this profile, and the rum remains soft, like a tender caramel. The vanilla, too, is delicate. There's also a certain sweetness that leads us towards caramel candy. Resting gives the caramelized nuts and coconut time to spice things up a little. 8:On the palate entry is surprising, gripping the taste buds like a piece of toasted wood and later coconut. The rum is much less round than expected at first, for although the sensation is sweet, the caramel aromas are quite dry and dark. Then the rum softens again, with honey and vanilla and hints of roasted nuts and becomes very round. 8:The finish is soft and sweet, with burnt and roasted notes that linger on the tongue.. Edit:9.3.25-a tasty easy sipper

They have added this big brother to the 15 year old and it's much better. They're still not there yet though they hav managed to make this one heavier in the taste. I think the idea with this version was to try and challenge Zacapa and El Dorado, but they still have some way to go. For the price though, this is a good rum.

This is a good daily driver. Nothing special on the palate. The finish is quite short.

Nice daily sipper and in terms of complexity a clear further development to the 15 year old evergreen. This is a solid rum that is also suitable for beginners due to its mild appearance. I think the price-performance ratio is decent.

Update: You will probably not be too impressed with this ron the first time you sip it but when you actually buy the bottle and use it as a sipper the relative lack of added sugar compared to the more crowd-pleasing expressions from e.g. O&O will really start to be appreciated. I now like it more than my Quorhum 30 year even though I was sure of the opposite when I first got the two. There is a confidence to letting a rum stand on its own with less additives and I enjoy and appreciate that more and more each day with this rum compared to the Quorhum which serves as my other current Dominican easy sipper. Let yourself go through at least a third of this bottle and watch it grow as your favorite relaxed ron sip. Original review: I currently have a thing for Dominicans as my easy sippers. Pronounced vanilla note, goes down so easy you barely notice it (making it work well as background sip material while doing something else). But please, do not pay more than 65€ tops for this thing, and even that is pushing it in my opinion.

Good Rum. It took me a while to finish the bottle, it didn't appeal to me. With ice it feels better. Salu! 🥃

The taste is of licorice and roasted almonds and notes of hazelnut. This fresh and fruity flavor changes to a more sherry-like aftertaste

I would like to compare it with the Unhiq and I was kind of surprised that that it was not better. Still very pleasant and round experience with little bit more warm and rough aspects. I would like to compare it directly against its 15 years old variant. I think that the it not so big improvement after all with respect to the price.

An artisan rum

Not very interesting. Vanilla, caramel and wood from start to finish. No depth. No evolution. Nothing really interesting.

Pleases with even more nuances and increased mildness on the nose and palate in contrast to the 15YO. Unfortunately, however, quite reserved on the nose, which costs it points. Pleasant, not too complex sipper.

Guter und solider Rum für den Einstieg. Sehr süßlich und weich im Abgang. Wurde bei der zweiten Verkostung aber etwas runtergestuft, da er im Vergleich zu anderen Rums im Abgang etwas flach wirkt.

fine, sharper aftertaste but short

The nose is rather restrained, we find mainly molasses with a touch of toasted touches. The nose is light and sweet on the caramel candy. And despite the 40%, it is a little alcoholic. The nose is rather pleasant. The attack in mouth is on the toasted woody. This nose is not too sweet as the nose foreshadowed, it is rather dry on the caramel. With touches of honey and vanilla. The finish is again sweet on burnt maple syrup and spices. At about sixty euro, it is an easy and pleasant ron to drink that should please neophytes.
