Engenhos do Norte 970 Edition 2004
Not what you expect from a cane-juice agricole: this Madeira rum leans dark and wine-soaked, with raisin, tobacco, oak and a whiff of glue on the nose. The Madeira wine cask dominates — one taster called it almost "Armagnac artig," very dry and woody. Fresh cane still peeks through, but so does an astringent, bitter grape-skin edge some found frustrating.

How does Engenhos do Norte 970 Edition 2004 taste?
Aggregated from 29 community reviews.
Dry, woody wine-cask agricole from Madeira Divides people. Rich wine-cask agricole with raisin, spice and tobacco, but the dryness and bitter grape-skin finish put some off. Aerate it long and it opens up.

Excellent RQP in Portugal. Spices, big licorice in all its forms, freshness of cane, then grip of local wood, mutated wine, raisins, borderline sticky on the palate. Menthol. A form of roasting inherent to Madeira's island flavors. The finish is long, mushy and slightly astringent. The empty glass smells like a cigar box. A must in its category. Not for everyone. 86+.

Sehr schöner Rum aus Madeira. Etwas untypisch vom Profil für „do Norte“, da mehr Holz und dunkle Aromen vorhanden sind, als üblich. Aber deshalb auch etwas außergewöhnlich.

I have a problem with this rum: I can't decide whether I like it or not. Every time I taste it, I get a new impression. The nose is always more or less the same: grapes, wood, spices. You can tell it's an agricultural wine. On the palate, the grape is very present. The woodiness is strong. The rum is dry and heavy. It's halfway between an agricole and some of Guyana's molasses. But I often find it very unpleasantly bitter. The bitterness of grape skins. It's frustrating because when I don't have that sensation, I love its power. The rum clearly benefits from VERY long aeration. Edit: very woody and bitter finish. Decidedly, hard to make up one's mind. Edit edit: oxidation is this bottle's friend! Edit edit edit: farewell. I would have loved you anyway! That woody farmer!

Strong tobacco and wood on the nose, with hints of sweetness. PalateFruity and dark, with pleasant but robust wood. Grape and licorice. Agricultural but distinctive, with a Saint James tendency. Tobacco-cigar-coffee. A rum to try

More on the dry, astringent side.

Very dark, smoky, glue-laden and the first few minutes almost sweat-like on the nose. 🙈 Then comes through something like juniper, menthol, leather saddle, tobacco, honey and chocolate. Almost Armagnac artig and very dry and Holzbetont. Not necessarily mine but sow exciting!
