The Rum Mercenary & Kintra Sample X Sample Eleven Special Edition (Salon du Rhum)

Dried plum, pear and light oak up front, with caramel and a bit of chocolate underneath — a Caribbean blend leaning Guyana and Barbados, finished in ex-cognac casks. At 62.2% the alcohol hits hard early; nearly everyone says give it time in the glass. The cognac adds fruit but softens the funk. One taster caught earthy off-notes, so bottles vary a little.

The community says
  • Dark fruit and oak
  • Good value
  • Keep in mind: Hot alcohol

From community reviews · summarized with AI

Cask-strength blend, hot but rewarding once rested Most people land around good value with real complexity once it rests. The catch is heat — the 62.2% needs air, and the ex-cognac reruns tamed the funk.

On a business trip to Bucharest, I take along this little sample from friend B. Not disappointed, it's pretty much what I expected, with a strong cognac presence, but also caramel and Guyanese chocolate. A little alcohol on the palate, but you'll have to get used to it.

I don't know if my sample is not quite right, but there are such clear off-notes of earth, moss and mold that I can hardly drink it. The alcohol is also very poorly integrated!

So for the price you can definitely say nothing. Only the alcohol is a little more than present at the beginning. But it gets better with a little time in the glass. It also cuts a good figure as a mixer.

Guyana clearly dominates the nose. Beautiful dark notes of plum, pear and wood. Overall very round, soft and pleasing. In the mouth, the alcohol is appropriate for the 62.2%, but is surprising given the gentle nose. Picks me up!

09.05.2026 Retasting and still a pretty decent rum once rested. ---------------- 25.01.2023 Enjoying some samples at home. Colour Medium dark in colour. Nose Fresh, light wood, fruits, light orange, raisin, spice, faint caramel. Palate Warm, light wood, faint smoke, fruits, light orange, oily, light chocolate, dried fruit. Finish Long and warm, oily, light wood, dried fruit, light caramel, faint chocolate. Needs to rest for a good while or the ABV will bite.

Orange, pineapple, vanilla and egg liquor. A light nuttiness in the finish. The cognac influence is clearly there and is a good match. High in alcohol, a splash of water isn't necessary but won't hurt either. Good value for money. In comparison to the white port edition, it seems a bit harsher at first but in the long run it shows more complexity.

Price-performance top! Significantly more percentages and 15 months post-maturation in ex-Cognac barrels have done him good. Only the funk has unfortunately suffered somewhat under the post-maturation. Otherwise, the typical flavors by the Barbados and Spanish shares plus fruit by the cognac.

Very alcoholic in the nose. Needs time. French oak comes through. After the alcohol fades away it's a very decent drop. Less Jamaican driven than the normal "eleven". More Foursquare/panama driven.

Very greedy profile. Very present on the palate, in contrast to the more discreet nose. Excellent value for money!

Alcohol is not perfectly integrated, but good value for money at release.
