Woody, leathery and dark, with cinnamon and licorice up front and cocoa-coffee sweetness underneath. This XO leans away from the grassy agricole side toward something more roasted and spiced. A slightly syrupy texture rounds it out, though the nose reads closed and the palate a touch light for 43%. Tasters call it a pleasant, gentle Saint James sipper — dry but nicely rounded.

Here's a profile that changes and shows what this little house is capable of. This XO moves away from agricultural and plant-based terroir to offer something more typical of its distillery (Saint James here), with spicier notes of cinnamon and licorice, more gourmand coffee and cocoa, a fruity sweetness and aromas of nuts and toast. A lively, concentrated nose. The attack on the palate is based on a similar foundation: wood, sweet spices, roasted and toasted notes on almond and a fruity side that softens the whole. The tannins dry out the palate and add a slight astringency. The slightly syrupy texture confirms the supple, elegant, gourmet character of this XO. The finish, of just the right length, combines exotic fruit with dark, empyreumatic notes, for a dry but nicely rounded profile that leaves a lovely final impression on the palate. A rum above the rest of the range, available at a very affordable price for an XO. A must-try for all lovers of rhum agricole.

👃 The nose receives wood, apricot, cinnamon and a bit of pepper. 👄 On the palate there is also chocolate, leather and more pepper. It's a bit oily with a rather long finish. A decent old rum to sip.

La Route des Rhums Advent Calendar 2022 No. 3 Now a Saint James, which doesn't convince me. Slight coffee and cocoa notes on the nose. Then chocolate and a little Mikka on the palate. This rum is too dry for me.

A pleasant and very smooth agricole rum, probably a bit too much. On the palate it is very light with woody and fruity notes that struggle to assert themselves. The alcohol, even at 43%, is present. It's a good rum to start with but too light for an enthusiast.

Tasted blind, the nose is closed except for the very present licorice. Even after resting, this rum remains definitely closed except for a spicy woody note. On the palate, it's soft but without a defined fruity marker. Pepper and wood are perceptible, with a roasted note. The palate is short.

A simple and intense rum in wood and leather, I really like it. And an interesting price. Nose: quite closed, wood - leather Palate: similar with a nice build-up on leather and caramel, intense and deep aromas, some tannins too, I really like it! The finish is quite long, closed and deep on leather, very enjoyable. The price is very fair especially for such a limited edition, I'd jump on it at the first chance.
