Depaz Private Cask (Premium Craft Spirits Selection) 2010

One member calls it authentic and fiery, and that's the read most owners land on. Big oak drives this cask-strength Depaz — pepper, vanilla, licorice and leather up front, with sugarcane freshness and a menthol lift keeping it from turning heavy. Dried fruit, dark chocolate and a touch of caramel round the rustic edges. The finish runs long. At 58% the heat isn't fully tucked in, and the wood dominates.

Red fruits and wood on the nose. The palate is really explosive with very intense woody notes of leather, peat and cork. It all remains very dry.Tannic, earthy and slightly bitter on the finish that remains long and persistent, but I like it less than on the palate, could have reached 93.Empty glass smells of esters and wood

Very pleasant Depaz, very natural, the French oak brought its dose of spice and a hint of vanillin. My preference is still for the previous vintages in the SC series (the 2000 in the lead) because for roughly the same price there was more concentration and complexity.

Dommage. Merci à Rodolphe pour le sample.

Depaz

Avg Rating 8.1/10 over 140 Rums

Depaz is the rum born from a volcano. After Mount Pelee wiped out Saint-Pierre and his entire family in 1902, the orphaned Victor Depaz came back and planted cane on the very slopes that had killed them. The distillery he built in 1917 still stands at the foot of the volcano, and its agricole is among the most decorated on Martinique.
