Here's the twist: this is a Caroni that stays clean. Yes, the rubber, tar and oiled-machine notes are there, but they sit in the background behind toffee sweetness, mint, cacao and light fruit. At 62.9% the alcohol carries weight without scorching. Several tasters called it a "controlled" Caroni — one even called it "a too clean and fruity for a caroni." A gentle way into the style.

Also a retaste for me and again I stick to the initial score. A light Caroni in my ming but the overall balance is really good. In my mind the price tag on this rum is high compare to what you get. That said it's still a pretty good Caroni. Not super heavy in the traditional notes, but a more controlled version. The rubber and tar is there as well as nice wood and light fruit with light spice, mint and also herbal notes.

Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad that produced rum at the height of its fame, which was added at a ratio of 1:10 to a naval blend. It was too strong and weird to be pleasant on the tongue. The distillery stopped production and was closed in 2000. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who liked the rum precisely for its special taste. And interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of rums "you need to try before you die." I recommend it, Caroni is truly a unique rum.

Edit: tested again after some time. Sticking to the rating, but it wouldn't be worth the price for a whole bottle. A nice Caroni, but there are better ones. It definitely doesn't belong in the dirty corner. More suitable to open the door to Caroni for someone. Thanks DomM for the sample.

Nose is comparably delicate. Dominated by some Caroni notes alongside sweet/malty notes and some fruits. Quite approachable Sweet and fruity on the palate; some mint and cacao as well. Dirty notes are only present on the finish alongside some menthol. Very tasty. However, too delicate to excite friends of the dirty profile imho.

One of my first Caronis and really something different, although at that price I would prefer other great rums. 2nd tasting: Still exceptionally good. Now I will compare it with another 98 Caroni. Let's see.

Like many other (continental) 98 Caronis, very accessible, with lots of toffee sweetness, polish, and slightly fruity notes. On the palate then not quite so tame, here workshop, tobacco, mocha. A fruit fly constantly buzzing around the glass (and despite wild hand movements can’t be shaken off) seems very taken with the profile of the SBS 😅

Nice representative from 1998, all typical markers of the HTR-Caronis are integrated in the profile, the alcohol adds strength without overpowering; spicy, slightly astringent, yet with a nice residual sweetness. Very good.

Solid 98 caroni, rather unusually floral and fruity overall. Alcohol is well integrated and overall much more complex than the RA in my opinion. You can do it, definitely!

Nice sweet, fruity notes. But the typical Caroni only subtly in the finish. Especially in direct comparison with the Cave Guildive, it clearly falls short for me.

Even though I'm not overly motivated when it comes to Caroni, I'm aware of the price and value for money... This bottle is a very nice. It's not an HTR Caroni, but you can still feel the technicality, the typical oiled machine, rubber, tar, but also nice tones of woodiness, fine spices, mint, light fruitiness and especially when you let it breathe in the fresh bar air and sit in the glass for a longer time, a nice sweetness also opens up. Great stuff.
