DDL El Dorado Single Still Port Mourant 2009

"The profile is amazing. Unfortunately just 40% abv" is basically the whole story here, and lots of tasters echo it. On the nose you get classic Port Mourant: molasses, prune, black tea, a little licorice and wood. The palate carries demerara sugar, baking spice and dried fig but comes across thin and short. A calm, readable PM that never quite hits.

Today we compare three El Dorado from 2009. Port Mourant RX13844, Enmore RX13123 and Versailles RX14577. Unfortunately, they are all reduced to 40%, otherwise something very good could have emerged. A little too thin for me personally. Otherwise, quite successful bottlings for an introduction to the El Dorado universe, although I would prefer the El Dorado 12,15 or 21 here.

Well I was very exited to try those single still releases… this is exactly what I would hope for DDL released on a larger scale (and hopefully at a half reasonable price). All three show the common characteristics you would expect and love about DDL‘s stills. No need for blended in the barrel / finishes / obscure leftover casks. Unfortunately, the reduction to 40% ABV is basically a crime against humanity 🙈 While the noses are surprisingly intense, on the palate all three releases are way to thin to deliver the profile competently. Nevertheless all seem in a good place after 12 years of tropical aging and as there are also limited higher ABV bottles available there is a chance for genuinely amazing OB release from DDL in the future. Fingers crossed.

As with the EHP and VSG, a great nose that unfortunately - thanks to extreme dilution - cannot deliver on the palate as it actually could. Apart from the dilution, a beautiful PM with sweetness, licorice/aniseed, fruit, wood and without the often disturbing saltiness or too much herbs. It may have been sweetened a little here.

Since I've been drinking rum almost exclusively at cask strength for some time now, it already seems very thin, but despite all that I think it's a great way to start the evening, you can recognize the PM profile very well and not everyone drinks rum at cask strength. The price, on the other hand, is very off-putting. I think that 45-50% ABV would have done the bottling a lot of good. The rum releases a lot of aroma after a short time in the glass, so leave it to stand for 10 minutes.

The typical PM notes are undoubtedly recognizable, but the profile in particular becomes a kind of "PM light" - the reduction takes the punch out of the distillate, but also introduces a new facet. There's something about it, and for Demerara newbies in particular, it's a harmonious addition to the high-proof releases.

Despite 13 years in the barrel this Port Mourant El Dorade has a nice balanced between the oaky side and the spirit side. The exotic fruit remind me of Jamaican rum and give a nice freshness and counter balance to the cask notes. I like this one the most of the three 2009 single still bottlings.

Simple Port Mourant, if you can taste simple in PM. The complexity of the profile can at least be guessed, fruit and tea notes are perceptible. It just lacks a lot of punch due to the dilution. nice on the side. Or to start a tasting. You can't go wrong. Except for the price 🙄

Really good stuff for 40%! Just don't compare it with the great cask strength bottlings. Of course, there are worlds in between

Avg Rating 7.8/10 over 250 Rums

Demerara Distillers is the company that ended up holding everything. As Guyana's only surviving rum maker, its Diamond plant runs the world's last wooden pot stills and the last wooden Coffey still alongside modern columns, draws 24 different marks from them, and blends them into El Dorado. It is also the reason most Demerara on the shelf comes from one address.
