"Caroni Dreck meets menthol" is how one member sums it up, and that's the pull here. Super fresh, very dry and intense TDL. Less mint but much more eucalyptus, camphor, elderberry, some bitter orange, and a lot of smoky wood but no wonder after a full 16 years tropical aging. Could almost pass blind as tropical uitvlugt because of the slight pencil note, which I don't like so much... Also reminds me of various old Clarendons. Very wild! But the RA 2001 clearly wins here in direct comparison! This one is a bit extreme on the pure menthol/camphor side, which is too much for me here...

An incredibly strong rum. A lot of power in it. At first I had a strong taste of gorgonzola in my mouth. Definitely not for the sober palate. I liked the 2003 vintages better because the (yellow) fruit is more present. It is simply too strong and too brute in taste for me. It works better for me with water.

An absolute favorite! I was looking for a quality sample to celebrate a sad event, and I found myself smiling again instantly. The nose is a little discreet, but opens up with the same tastes as on the palate, where the menthol and red fruit flavors in particular shatter all scores, with a crazy intensity, very gourmand, very complete. In short, top 1 of the year in a single sip. Kisses grandpa, we'll never forget you. Edit: dreaming about it, top, but a texture that lacks a hair of fat to be perfect :)

Of the dirty TDLs, 2001 is the most prominent vintage. The 2001s are the dirtiest, 2002 is fresher and 2003 is yellow fruitier. In crosstasting, I tried the RA, TCRL, Nobilis, Plantation Antipodes and the new Rasta Morris. The rums are incredibly similar - esp. the Nobilis and RM are barely distinguishable. The RA stands out because of the dilution, the Plantation is clearly marked by the cognac barrel - it moves it closer to the 2003s - and the TCRL is the freshest, with an unusual herbal note. The TCRL is somewhat reminiscent of the 2002s.The Nobilis is the dirtiest of my samples with the RM. In addition to the typical menthol and mint notes, there is tar, wood, toasty caramel, tobacco and some coffee. The yellow fruits (overripe peach) are quite far in the background but there. If I had to distinguish the Nobilis from the RM, I would point to the smell of damp cellar (musty, cardboard) in the Nobilis versus a wood-paneled man's room. A difference that is probably mostly imaginary. Both are even more wood driven than the other two. Maybe these rums shouldn't age much. For me, on the same level as the RM. Very, very good.

Expressive rum with an intense mint profile that immediately stands out and gives the distillate an unusual freshness. Behind this lies ripe fruit, fine spice and a pleasantly integrated strength. A real exclamation mark that inspires and lingers for a long time.

9,2:On the nose, the first impression we get is roasted wood, a bit spicy with smoke, nuts, caramel, as the fruits are tropical with passion fruit, dried with apricot, currants, red with cherry and citrus with mandarine. We feel the dirt, tar pervading through the notes. After airing the rum, the molasses is dark with black tea, minty, some tobacco pops up and pleasant pastry.Very tempting, round. 9:On the palate, the attack is very fruity, syrupy, industrial and woody, with all variety of exotic fruits like passion fruit, mandarine, toasted coconut and dried apricots.The wood is charred with nuts, chocolate and caramel, smoky, spicy with vanilla and pepper.With industrial notes like rubber and tar, it comes bitter. The molasses is vegetal with mint, tea, eucalyptus.After some rest, some camphor shows for a moment, just for a sec. Confectionery and charred wood round up the palate. 8,9:The finish is long, TDL industrial, woody with spice, charred notes, dry, the fruits are weaker, as the molasses is vegetal with oregano, tea, herbal and darker with a licorice.

Even if it's not quite my profile, this is one of the better TDLs from the early 2000s. Mint/menthol/eucalyptus blend nicely here but still stand out. So if you like menthol notes, you'll find this one and be happy.

The TDLs from the early 2001s are gradually developing into real highlight releases. You have to like the minty eucalyptus note and it also seems to have some splitting potential - but aromatically, it's a real blast. Really impressive, I'm curious about a crosstasting. But the first impression is already very convincing.

A T.D.L 2001 that stands out for its balance and exuberance. The nose is impressive, at once empyreumatic like a Caroni, medicinal and fruity like a T.D.L., but with an elegance beyond compare. The nose exudes strength. Woodiness, tobacco and spices join forces to make a place for themselves in this compelling, divisive profile. The attack on the palate is powerful, intense and yet highly aromatic. Menthol, eucalyptus and aromatic herbs defy empyeumatic notes of tar, rubber, smoke and oak that pull on spice to take control of the palate. Dried fruit, caramel and dark chocolate are more discreet, ambushing the palate. The finish lingers between the medicinal side (menthol, eucalyptus, aromatic herbs) and the empyreumatic aromas (smoke, tar, rubber) of the other. Behind the spices lies a less pronounced form of bitterness than usual, made up of licorice and leather. The fruit is very subtle, but adds a touch of deliciousness to this most intense profile. A rum that stands out from the ordinary, complex, balanced, powerful but with impeccable mastery: great art.

Clearly more challenging than the FRC TDL 2002 (RX13557), which seems downright pleasing against the one year older, darker and much more powerful Nobilis, even if the Barracuda with 61.4% vol. is not exactly a child of alcoholic sadness either. I think it's the mood of the day that decides which of the two comes out on top here. In any case, the mint I love so much is present in both. But the CDI TDL 2003 16yr (RX944; bottling for Germany) remains in this respect the (my) measure of all things.

the nose reminds me of the TDL Excellence Rhum 2003, with red fruits, pipe tobacco, caramel, and a dirty menthol note, but not as pronounced as the RA TDL 2001. The palate is intense, dirty charred, tannins, barrel. Long, fresh (only slightly mentholated) finish. Again, an excellent TDL that one can definitely put close to Caroni.

👃 Wow! Intense bomb of mint, plus eucalyptus, Hollywood chewing gum, white mint... All these menthol notes are counterbalanced by a wood smoke, leaf tobacco and a dirty side close to some Caroni... The shadow looms. Then, you distinguish a strong concentration of tropical fruits left too long in the sun, in a bowl, mixed with very caramelized brown sugar. Peach note in the background but present from time to time. 😋 Really camphor actually, tiger balm by the spoonful (don't try it, huh!), very oriental menthol, hyper intense. It stays in the mouth for hours. The funky Jamaican side but with Trinidadian sauce, characterized by a compote of tropical fruits (mango, papaya, guava) mixed with a dirty, caramelized and warm molasses. Slight notes of citrus on blood orange appear accompanied by black fruits on berries and red fruits on the black cherries from the Basque country. ⛳ Again this very camphorous, fresh, intense, incisive menthol. You have to like it. I love it. A bit of citrus always, some dices of sweet tropical fruits, wood sugar, the cask is charred, disintegrated. A note of burnt rubber too. It's close to Caroni again... There's only one step to claim that there's a bit of Caroni in some of these TDL 2001... Surely in the top 3 of TDL 2001 released so far, very focused on mint and all its variations, on a very Caroni-like dirty side and tropical fruits macerated in their molasses.

A surprising nose combining menthol and red fruits (blackcurrant and raspberry). Vanilla wood underpins with a hint of tar. An explosion of flavors on the palate, with menthol and red berries, but also pink grapefruit, vegetal bitterness and black tar. The finish is long, with vegetal bitters, black tar and pink grapefruit. A delicious, complex, fresh, dirty and fruity rum. A real discovery!

The nose is amazing n this one. Most mint I had in one of the 2000ish TDLs so far. Yet this is also complex providing a profile akin to a well made Queens Park Swizzle. Intense on the palate. Mint is much less present. The bottling shows quite some dirt and smoke alongside the mint and fruity notes. Excellent.

Nose Medium intense, fruity, wood, light roasted, light cherry, light earthy, light caramel, light nutts. Palate Fresh, medium intense, wood, faint smoke, dried fruit, light varnish, light mint, light earthy, oily, Finish Long, wood, light roasted, faint smoke, light citrus, light mint, light caramel. Something is probably in the air in Trinidad: So much dirty flavors you know mostly only from Caroni, but also TDL shows every now and then, how Trinidad tastes (and thereby times the barrel discussion post-Caroni aside...). The rum is similar to the RA TDL 2001 or the CDI TDL 16y, but brings much less mint. Here we have even more spicy notes, barrel influence and that rather hard to define (positive) dirt. Since I am not the biggest mint fan, I like the Nobilis in any case very well and this bottling actually screams for a cross-tasting with the two already mentioned!

What can one say about this bottling. A 2001 T.D.L. I really believe that old Caroni barrels have been filled up with this stuff or have been unintentionally blended. Caroni "dirt" meets menthol/mint from T.D.L. Awesome schxxx.

Magnificent round nose with a lot of red and black fruits 😍 Mouth is a bit sharper and less balanced but more funky on the other hand. A very good rum overall. 2001 vintage is definitely better than 2002 at TDL 🔥

Puuuh, yeah this one is crazy, but I think the next 4 will be too :) First impression, seriously intense mint in nose and palate. There's also a bit of tar and rubber added. Better than the first one.

Poured it in, left it outside and when I went back out through the door I was immediately hit by the smell. A really nice fruity eucalyptus note. In the mouth, it's dirtier than comparable TDLs, with a nice gummy note. The mint is of course also intensely present, along with some charred barrel, which also lasts a long time in combination with a mocha note in the finish.

A very Caroni-like TDL, the tar is very expressive. Menthol follows, and the other aromas are hidden by the first two - some red fruits and bit of caramel. On the palate the tat and menthol are still there, it's quite intense. Overall a beautiful TDL with Caroni influence, not overly complex but a very nice rum.

I had been waiting for a sample of this rum for a long time and I was not disappointed! Earthy. Woody. Dirty. Heavy. Dry. Intense. Mentholated. Somewhere between the TDL CDI casks for the mentholated side and the Cuffy from Gus't for the heavy and dirty side. The menthol is very present and refreshes a very heavy and woody frame. The alcohol is there. It's sweet but dry. Rather long finish, even though I thought it would be even more endless. Top rum.

Very tasty intense TDL. Brings all the notes that you are looking for in a TDL. Mint, smoke, fruit and some dirt. There is a lot going on here. Compared to the RA TDL 2001 already a bit darker with more mint. But less dirty. Would blindly rather guess a 2003. If it were not for the price. The price development of the TDLs 2000-2003 makes me a little worried.

Quite a great representative of the 2001s, for me almost on the same high level as the Rasta Morris TDL 2001. A lot of menthol in both, quite dirty and bitter, but then also fruity aromas behind it. Where I find some wood in the Rasta Morris, I find a little cardboard here and in this respect I like the Rasta Morris a little better, and the Rasta Morris' issue price was a little fairer. Edit: RX2222 tasted against RX13862 and RX15322. The RX22222 has a wonderful nose with yellow fruits, baking spices and falernum. On the palate, the attack continues to be very fruity at first, then more and more tannins and menthol come through. Everything is very round, harmonious and elegant. The finish is quite bitter with tannins and spices. A really great bottling! In comparison, the Nobilis is less fruity and somewhat more closed on the nose. Less fruit on the palate too, but more on the woody side, with lots of spices and tannins. In addition to the spices, there is a slight hint of cardboard on the finish. Also a really great 2001! The Rasta Morris is the most medicinal 2001 on the nose, with the most menthol. Less fruit than the Swell. On the palate it is the bitterest of the three, but that doesn't bother me, as the bitterness is embedded in a nice fruitiness with a hint of spices. Nice finish with menthol, where I find cardboard in the Nobilis, I find fine wood here. The Rasta Morris is and remains simply an absolute board. Swell and Rasta Morris are on a par for me today, with the Swell being a little fruitier than the Rasta Morris, which has more noble wood. But the Nobilis is also a great bottling, although for me it doesn't quite come close to the other two.

A very intense rum with lots of medicinal notes accompanied by eucalyptus, citrus and a bit of smoke. A drop of water helps to tame the very bold profile. Love to see more releases like this!

A beautiful tdl! A little dirty, as we like it. The blackcurrant resembles a jam, and the tropical fruit salad that goes with it is perfectly expected. Slight "weed" on the nose. A nose reminiscent of ER, but more woody or rather spicy. The palate is opulent, the finish very long, with all the expected markers in such concentration that it's almost plastic. The integration of alcohol is very good, but the 65 degrees are not hidden. On the finish, there's a hint of licorice, dried prunes and a violet almost worthy of a borderies cognac mixed with a gentle caroni. Excellent for me

Beautiful matte bottle under 100€. You can smell the alcohol, but very drinkable. I recommend it even to beginner rum lovers to discover new flavors. Mint from TDL is an unmistakable taste that you will never get tired of.

After 1h30 of airing Upfront on the nose is all about petroleum/hydrocarbon and I also get glue. A nose that seems much more complex and less readable than the others in the end. I have a strong yellow fruit/peach, peach ice tea side that I had on my first tasting of this one. A background of cooked tropical fruit, warm fruits. A super captivating nose. On the palate I get yeast appearing, a bitter/rough/slightly spicy side but not disturbing with the fruits and the peach that arrives like a bomb. I have a background of roasted/smoky difficult to describe. My dad senses tobacco notes that could align with my roasted/smoky side. A lot is happening in the mouth, it goes in all directions, it's super complex and very hard to follow. On the finish the peach I had on the nose comes back strongly with all this compote of tropical fruits. At the end of the finish the fruits balance with a rubber note that arrives. Then the peach takes over again, and it goes back and forth between peach and rubber.

a fruity explosion on the nose with a full potpourri of red fruits, strawberries, cherries, mint and fruit gum. I like the freshness compared to the rotten fruit notes of some of the Jamaica rums. Less fruity on the palate with mint and eucalyptus and a bit bitterness from the cask .

On opening, a dark odor of wood, black fruit, you can say not wow, what's going on inside, very discreet like the lmdw 2001, but after it's not the same story, the Ferrari comes out of the garage, the attack is impressive, not astringent, it releases its stinking marker and settles for a long time at the top of the palate, even if it's close to planting, the caksus is special for me, the alcohol doesn't make itself felt, so much menthol and camphor/precious wood are present that it goes by itself without any tingling sensation, be careful, it's not velvet after all, in short, the exuberant and now too famous tdl marker is present, what a slap in the face, a big wow!, rum that doesn't tend to improve with oxy, but it's perfect as it is, a nugget, close to rasta 21 but better for me.

Direct comparison with Rasta Morris 2001: Both bottlings are very similar to me. The Nobilis hits you directly with mint and menthol. Then a dirty note and a long dry wood-heavy finish. The RM is a bit more elegant. Not quite as overwhelming with mint & menthol. Simply better balanced flavor notes. If you like the profile, both are strong bottlings. I'm just missing a bit of the berry notes for the 90. They get lost in mint, menthol, and dirty notes.

Nose: Very dark, with fruit and a good deal of barrel-related empyreumatic. We find peach and blackcurrant; red fruit, even black, not very ripe. These fruits are melted in a vat of hydrocarbons and rubber reminiscent of the Caroni distillery. On the palate, the finish is a little acidic, with peach and blackcurrant mixed with lemon and a hint of tongue-tingling spice reminiscent of ginger. As time goes by, this acidic freshness gives way to a dark, concentrated heaviness of hydrocarbons with the bitterness of cherry pit. Finish: a fine balance between the predominance of hydrocarbons and the wood and fruit in the background, keeping things fresh.

To me the best TDL in general and easily in my top 10. On par with many Caronis. I just regret that I missed a chance to get a bottle as this one is quite rare. Georgeous mix of dirty notes, mint, tropical fruits and roasted notes.
