Consensus is warm here: most tasters call this one of the better continental 1997 Caronis, "sehr rund" and well-balanced, with a couple noting it doesn't go quite as dark or heavy as they'd want. Expect the classic dirty side — rubber, tar, leather, varnish — cut by burnt sugar and yellow tropical fruit. The 57.9% alcohol sits well-integrated, not hot.

This Caroni is right up my street. Wonderfully balanced, fruit and dirt in equal measure. Probably the best '97 continental-matured Caroni I've had in a glass. Now, if it were a little deeper, more powerful on the dark side of power, it would be phenomenal. As it is, it's "just" great. Nevertheless, I "need" a whole bottle of it. Because I don't think a better continental 97 will be bottled again. Many thanks, DrDjango, for the fine sample! Update 2025-02-14: Beaten by RX11279 and therefore scored 3 points lower than the previous tasting.

A tasting with four 1997 Caronis, all having the typical dirty Caroni style very intensely. The alcohol is very well integrated in all. The Bristol falls a bit short as it is rather restrained on the palate and relatively short in the finish. Also simpler than the others. The V&M is very fruity dirty and feels palate-pleasing, almost elegant compared to the others. Still very dirty, as if someone stepped into a deep oil puddle on their way to the prom with their jacket. The Rum Cask is on the palate a different league than the previously mentioned, voluminous and full of power, starting with a red fruit somewhat sour hint of aromas. The finish is medium to long like the other two. The best for last. The Berry Bros is clearly my favorite here. Voluminous, very complex, dirty, and extremely fruity at the same time with an eternally long finish! For me, the best 1997 I've had in the glass so far. Awesome piece!

Nice complexity on the nose. This bottling has some additional herbal notes added to the 97 profile making it a standout in a positive way. Menthol-y and spicey on the palate with quite some dirt and wood. Not much fruits going on here. Some sweetness works well with the darker notes. Nice cask. Edit: after some oxidation, the second half of the sample has some fruits on the palate, too. Even better balanced now. Really nice one out of the continental 97s.

Lacquer, petrol, deep caramel, spices. Citrus fruits bring freshness.😍 Crunchy and powerful in the mouth. Beautiful finish. Petrol with lemon juice. A very round, fine gentleman's Caroni that absolutely does not hide its origins. Top league 1997.😀😀😀😀 Thanks to Bonn!!!

Great bottling. The nose is still restrained, but very digestible on the palate. It is quite strong on the palate but is coated in sweetness, making it a great overall combination. Very tasty.

8,8:On the nose, rubber and tar, hints of petrol, varnish, roasted wood notes with dark chocolate, perhaps cocoa, nuts, confectionery, caramel, spicy with allspice, dried fruits and menthol, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, citrus, tropical and red fruits arise, vegetal molasses with black tea, dark with licorice, various roasted tones like pastry, cookie, coffee and leather. 8,5:On the palate, the attack is rather imbalanced with menthol and spicy wood, pepper, but gets better with a help of flowery and dirty, meaty undertones, smoky, tar and rubber, roasted wood like caramel, cocoa, milk chocolate, leather, sweet with burnt sugar, spicy with allspice, vanilla, slightly salty, when the rum is well rested, and tropical, citrus fruits.The molasses becomes minty, dark with licorice. 8,6:The finish is long, dry, oily with industrial notes like tar, rubber, petrol, bicycle tube, pairing roasted, caramelized oak notes and fruits like cherry, berries and citrus, minty molasses. Great rum, what Caroni mainly means by dirty. Lots of rubber, tar, leather, and varnish on the dirty side. Burnt sugar provides the sweetness and tropical fruits on the palate are a very nice balance. Conclusion: Increased my share in the split :) Edit: after numerous Caronis in the glass -2. Still a great Caroni.

#5307 11.05.2025 Having a few samples while arranging my rum cabinets. Nose Wood, light roasted, light rubber faint herbal, light mint, light tar, light leather, light dried fruit. Palate Oily, wood, faint smoke, light roasted, fruits, light cherry, light mint, light tar, light rubber faint glue, berries. Finish Long and warm, oily, wood, light roasted, light tar, light rubber, light cherry, light mint. Empty glass Tar, rubber, berries, light medicinal, faint mango.

Strong 1997 Caroni. Very well balanced with dirty notes, sweetness and fruity notes. The alcohol is also well integrated. Simply a bit better/rounder than the other 1997s I've had in the glass so far.

Unexpectedly good Caroni. At Milano whisky festival I was disappointed, but I've got a sample that I tried tonight and it's really good. A nice balance of dirtiness (tar, rubber) and fruit sweetness (yellow fruits). Nice selection

Caroni for beginners! Nice fruity, slightly dirty Caroni, without overwhelming you. Nose typical with a bit of dried fruit, but mainly roasted, a bit dirty, leather. Palate again leather, slightly dirty, even slightly sweet. The Caroni newbies :-) Alcohol very well integrated. Finish could be longer.
