A JM from 1985 aged 15 years. Apart from its particularly beautiful dark color, this rum stands out from its 10-year-old cousin by its complexity and the darker side of its aromas. Spices come in a rush (nutmeg, cinnamon, pepper, vanilla) while the woody notes blend with the indulgence of hazelnuts, mocha and dark chocolate. Leather and tobacco add an undeniable extra depth that makes this rum as pleasant, delicate and complex. On the palate, the attack is gentle. Time has worked in favor of the rum, making it less agricole, more fragrant and more complex to analyze. The spices gradually cover the palate before incorporating the woody notes, tobacco, leather and dark chocolate. The dried fruits become more discreet. You can feel some slightly dusty notes from the old times. The whole is very round, fragrant and elegant. The finish, long, is very spicy and woody, slightly fruity, with a hint of bitterness, but very elegant. A very nice example of old agricole rum from the last century that is not on rancio notes. Compared to its 10-year-old counterpart, the nose is more subtle and dark, while the palate is softer and more mellow. The finish is perhaps slightly less marked because the product is also more tamed and light. In conclusion, we have two very beautiful expressions of the same vintage that show the differences that a few more years of aging can bring. No preference between the two rums, that will depend on the type of rum sought (more lively or more mellow and smooth).

#5401 16.06.2025 Relaxing with a set of JM samples I got during the weekend. One of the bottles I'm trying to locate at a good price. Nose Round, balanced, wood, light apple, light floral, cinnamon, light grass, faint caramel, light nutts. Palate Oily, medium dry, wood, light grass, light nutts, faint citrus, raisin, light floral, cinnamon, light caramel. Finish Long, wood, roasted, light grass, light nutmeg, cinnamon, raisin, faint caramel. Empty glass Caramel, vanilla, light orange, faint chocolate, light citrus.
