In der Samplekiste gekramt und diesen Rum hervorgeholt der schon lange auf der irgendwie immer länger werdenden "muss ich endlich Mal probieren Liste" stand. Der Rum ist in der Nase eher reserviert, irgendwie wirkt es als wäre das ganze in einer Parfüm Hülle konserviert. Nicht schlecht aber ein wenig langweilig. Zum Glück entfalten sich die Aromen am Gaumen und wir erleben Urlaubsfeeling. Viel Kokosnuss und etwas Vanille. Etwas Cappuccino, eine leckere Geschichte einfach. Nicht zu komplex aber es reicht das ich mich jetzt gerade auf die 🏝️ wünsche 😀

Ich kann die zumeist höheren Bewertungen leider nicht nachvollziehen. Der Rum kommt sowohl in der Nase als auch im Geschmack trotz des Alkoholgehalts von 60% relativ flach daher. Mit Zugabe von Wasser ändert sich das Geschmacksprofil auch nicht zum Besseren. Alles sehr verhalten, keine geschmackliche Tiefe, die man trotz jungem Alter zumindest ansatzweise erwarten könnte. Etwas Frucht, etwas Kokosnuss/karamelliges, das war’s. Das Fass findet bei mir überhaupt nicht statt. Ich kann auch die Richtung nicht erfassen, in die der Rum gehen will. Irgendwie weder Fisch noch Fleisch und nichts, was man nicht schon wesentliche besser umgesetzt im Glas hatte. Schade. Hatte mich sehr darauf gefreut, die Herkunft sowie Eckdaten haben einiges versprochen. Gut, dass ich nur ein Sample vorliegen hatte, der Drang, diese Flasche blind zu kaufen, war durchaus da.

Originaire d’Hawaï, ce nectar laisse l’impression d’un rhum gourmand et généreux au nez, avec des effluves de chocolat au lait et de chocolat blanc, de caramel, de sucre brun et brûlé, des notes rôties et un fruité sur les fruits secs et à coque (noix de coco). Si les épices et le bois se fondent bien au profil, ce sont les fleurs qui créent la surprise en offrant une autre dimension olfactive. Une belle première approche. L’attaque en bouche est puissante, portée des épices qui s’accrochent au palais, accompagnées de caramel, de noix de coco, de chocolat au lait et d’un boisé léger. Les fruits secs, les agrumes et les fruits à coque ressortent après aération. L’alcool est un poil piquant, mais le profil reste agréable et facile d’apprche. La finale est de longueur convenable, chaude et épicée, avec une trame de noix de coco, de caramel, de bois rôti, d’agrumes et de chocolat au lait. C’est légèrement salé sur la fin. Un rhum gouleyant avec du caractère, au terroir singulier et prometteur pour la suite.

Not bad for a five-year-old rum. The storage in Hawaii means of course a different degree of maturity than in continental storage, for example, at one of the large European brokers - in this respect, one should not be misled by the age statement. Exciting and promising in essence - I'm curious what further years in the barrel or possibly differently pre-occupied barrels can cause. Currently tasty solid, but still relatively close to comparable profiles from Barbados, Belize or Venezuela. All the sadder that all the rest of matured bottlings, which has reached us from Kōloa from Kaua'i so far, was hardly comparable, because probably not bottled pure (nota bene a guess on my part, based purely on subjective taste experiences). Beautiful discovery!

Koloa I knew so far only from the liqueurs / Spiced Rums, which are probably distributed exclusively. These I found quite interesting, but unfortunately do not fit so at all in my profile, because just gespiced and especially massively sugared. With this single cask is now the opportunity to test the basic substance and somehow I like it. Almost cliché for Hawaii I taste coconut, but in addition especially wood and spices. Not bad for a 5-year-old rum. Somehow the rum swings between boring Spanish with vanilla, caramel and slightly fruity notes and a British representative, which comes rather heavy and spicy. Overall exciting and as always my credo applies: New and unknown is an enrichment, especially in the rum world!

From the distillery there's a single barrel with about 59%, which's m.E. only in the U.S.. But at least this is probably the first single cask of an independent bottler... am curious:Nose: very aromatic, lots of fruit, sweet and floral, almost perfume. Besides but also neat spicy with allspice or nutmeg and vanilla. Fresh green apple and muted blackberry, quince, bergamot and lemon. Sweetness comes from burnt and caramelized sugar. I also find some milk chocolate. Slightly smoky-roasty in the background with a subtle vinegar note.Palate: interesting; spicy, slightly bitter-salty-hot and coconut milk at first. Creamy texture. Sweet caraway with some licorice and fat nut, pecan. Almost some umami. Lemon zest, metallic.Excitingly good!

The nose I find very restrained, after the alcohol note is verpflogen after some time!Delicate fruity notes, coupled with a floral sweetish nuance!On the palate, the alcohol (even after some time in the glass) is clearly perceptible! Still what young and spicy, but otherwise a welcome innovation in the international rum concert. Tastes literally "exotic" and peculiar. Especially this coconut, salted almond, roasted banana with a hint of Asia sweet and sour sauce - completely weird. First-class distillate, which with a few more years in the barrel will probably rise to quite great form. Fits well into the claviature of the Pacific, some Fiji, some Nine Leaves and now Hawaii.

Heute ist der Abend der persönlichen Premieren. Zuerst den Brazil und nun ein Rum aus Hawaii. In der Nase, am Gaumen sowie im Nachklang eine bunte Mischung aus Kokosnuss, Schokolade, würzig und ein bisschen Zitrusmarmelade. Das spannende Profil verweilt leider nicht allzu lange auf der Zunge. Mir gefällt der Rum, aber für eine ganze Flasche reicht es dann doch nicht. Gespannt bin ich auf das, was da noch in den nächsten Jahren kommt.

Sehr angenehm fruchtiger Geruch mit dezenter Kokusnuss. Da waren meine Erwartungen groß vor dem ersten Schluck. Leider konnte er mich geschmacklich nicht überzeugen. Der Alkohol ist deutlich wahrnehmbar und sticht für mich zu stark hervor. Auch mit einem Tropfen Wasser wurde es nur bedingt besser. Es ist auf keinen Fall ein schlechter Rum aber eine Flasche würde ich mir nicht zulegen.

#5054 18.01.2025 Enjoying a few samples at home. Nose Round, fresh, vanilla, light citrus, light wood, coconut, light caramel, faint chocolate. Palate Oily, round, light wood, faint smoke, light citrus, fruits, vanilla, light roasted, light caramel, faint chocolate. Finish Medium long, round, oily, light wood, fruits, light citrus, naturally sweet. The empty glass has toffee/fudge, chocolate, caramel and coconut.

Probably the first single barrel at cask strength from Hawaii to date. On the nose still quite perfumed, in the taste then quite clearly coconut, some citrus abrasion, milk chocolate, sea salt and vanilla pulp and slightly metallic notes. Pleases well, but could be a little rounder. ne bottle I would not need it.

Diese feine Mischung aus Kokos, Vanille und toastiger Eiche gefällt mir von Beginn an. Hinzu kommt ein sehr schönes, belebendes Mundgefühl ohne jegliche alkoholische Schärfe, das sofort Lust auf das nächste Schlückchen macht. Bei über 60% Alkoholgehalt macht das den Rum gefährlich süffig. Wieder mal eine leckere und qualitativ hochwertige Abfüllung von ‘‘Spirit of Rum‘‘.

An exciting new rum profile. At the beginning almost only fruit (orange to tangerine), which develops after some time in the glass to a delicious cocoa and milk chocolate mix (of course, not nearly as much cocoa as the infused variant of Koloa). Young wood and a certain spiciness that cavorts between fruit and chocolate rounds it all out.

Al naso è pungente, con frutti tropicali, legno, vaniglia, agrumi. Al palato cocco, agrumi, caramello, qualche spezia, un po' di legno, cioccolato al latte, il tutto corposo e caldo. Nel bicchiere vuoto vaniglia, cocco e un po' d'arrostito. Interessante

Wow, etwas ganz anderes. Mein erster Gedanke war, rieche ich an einem Rum oder an der Hawaiian Tropic Sonnencreme, die ich mir unter den Palmen zum Schutz aufgetragen habe. Mir hat er trotzdem ein wenig zu viel Alkoholeinfluss. Denke ein bißchen mehr Zeit im Fass würde ihm gut tun.

Read full review →The whole thing is extremely relaxed on the nose: A mix of fruit, lots of vanilla, a little nutmeg, wood, flowers and burnt sugar unfolds. What an invitation to try the rum straight away. This impression continues in the mouth. Pleasantly spicy, subtle coconut notes, lots of vanilla, a little salt, young wood (so not very bitter) and milk chocolate, licorice and bitter orange. Tastes like a mix of intense Spanish and Foursquare with salt. The Koloa Single Cask has something nutty and creamy about it, the texture reminds us a little of peanut butter.
