An exciting new rum profile. At the beginning almost only fruit (orange to tangerine), which develops after some time in the glass to a delicious cocoa and milk chocolate mix (of course, not nearly as much cocoa as the infused variant of Koloa). Young wood and a certain spiciness that cavorts between fruit and chocolate rounds it all out.

Probably the first single barrel at cask strength from Hawaii to date. Still quite perfumed on the nose, then clearly coconut on the palate, some citrus zest, milk chocolate, sea salt, vanilla seeds, and slight metallic notes. I like it, but it could be a bit rounder. Still, I wouldn't need a bottle of it.

Not bad for a five-year-old rum. The storage in Hawaii means of course a different degree of maturity than in continental storage, for example, at one of the large European brokers - in this respect, one should not be misled by the age statement. Exciting and promising in essence - I'm curious what further years in the barrel or possibly differently pre-occupied barrels can cause. Currently tasty solid, but still relatively close to comparable profiles from Barbados, Belize or Venezuela. All the sadder that all the rest of matured bottlings, which has reached us from Kōloa from Kaua'i so far, was hardly comparable, because probably not bottled pure (nota bene a guess on my part, based purely on subjective taste experiences). Beautiful discovery!

From the distillery there's a single barrel with about 59%, which's m.E. only in the U.S.. But at least this is probably the first single cask of an independent bottler... am curious:Nose: very aromatic, lots of fruit, sweet and floral, almost perfume. Besides but also neat spicy with allspice or nutmeg and vanilla. Fresh green apple and muted blackberry, quince, bergamot and lemon. Sweetness comes from burnt and caramelized sugar. I also find some milk chocolate. Slightly smoky-roasty in the background with a subtle vinegar note.Palate: interesting; spicy, slightly bitter-salty-hot and coconut milk at first. Creamy texture. Sweet caraway with some licorice and fat nut, pecan. Almost some umami. Lemon zest, metallic.Excitingly good!

Originating in Hawaii, this nectar leaves the impression of a generous, gourmand rum on the nose, with scents of milk and white chocolate, caramel, brown and burnt sugar, roasted notes and a fruity aroma of dried fruits and nuts (coconut). While spices and wood blend well with the profile, it's the flowers that create the surprise, offering another olfactory dimension. A fine first approach. The attack on the palate is powerful, carried by spices that cling to the palate, accompanied by caramel, coconut, milk chocolate and a light woodiness. Dried fruit, citrus and nuts emerge after aeration. The alcohol is a little spicy, but the profile remains pleasant and easy to appreciate. The finish is of decent length, warm and spicy, with a framework of coconut, caramel, roasted wood, citrus and milk chocolate. Slightly salty on the finish. An easy-drinking rum with character, a singular terroir and a promising future.

#5054 18.01.2025 Enjoying a few samples at home. Nose Round, fresh, vanilla, light citrus, light wood, coconut, light caramel, faint chocolate. Palate Oily, round, light wood, faint smoke, light citrus, fruits, vanilla, light roasted, light caramel, faint chocolate. Finish Medium long, round, oily, light wood, fruits, light citrus, naturally sweet. The empty glass has toffee/fudge, chocolate, caramel and coconut.

Tried the Rum Club again and I still like it very much. On the nose there are aromas of roasted almonds or sugar and in the taste also a bit nutty and notes of vanilla.

The nose I find very restrained, after the alcohol note is verpflogen after some time!Delicate fruity notes, coupled with a floral sweetish nuance!On the palate, the alcohol (even after some time in the glass) is clearly perceptible! Nice rum, naturally not much comparable on the market. Similar profile to Foursquare. However, less sweet and clearly spicier on the palate. Needs a very long time in the glass until it is really round.

Wow, something completely different. My first thought was, do I smell rum or the Hawaiian Tropic sunscreen that I put on under the palm trees to protect myself. It still has a little too much alcohol influence for me. I think a little more time in the barrel would do him good.

Koloa I knew so far only from the liqueurs / Spiced Rums, which are probably distributed exclusively. These I found quite interesting, but unfortunately do not fit so at all in my profile, because just gespiced and especially massively sugared. With this single cask is now the opportunity to test the basic substance and somehow I like it. Almost cliché for Hawaii I taste coconut, but in addition especially wood and spices. Not bad for a 5-year-old rum. Somehow the rum swings between boring Spanish with vanilla, caramel and slightly fruity notes and a British representative, which comes rather heavy and spicy. Overall exciting and as always my credo applies: New and unknown is an enrichment, especially in the rum world!

Very pleasantly fruity smell with subtle coconut. My expectations were high before the first sip. Unfortunately, it couldn't convince me in taste. The alcohol is clearly noticeable and stands out too much for me. Even with a drop of water, it only got somewhat better. Definitely not a bad rum but I wouldn't get a bottle.

Today is the evening of personal premieres. First the Brazil and now a rum from Hawaii. On the nose, palate, and finish a colorful mix of coconut, chocolate, spicy and a bit of citrus marmalade. Unfortunately, the exciting profile doesn’t linger long on the tongue. I like the rum, but not enough for a whole bottle. Curious about what will come in the next years.

Dug through the sample box and pulled out this rum that has long been on the somehow ever-growing 'I really have to try this' list. The rum is rather reserved on the nose, somehow it feels like everything is preserved in a perfume shell. Not bad but a bit boring. Luckily, the aromas unfold on the palate and we experience holiday vibes. Lots of coconut and some vanilla. A bit of cappuccino, just a delicious story. Not too complex but enough that I now wish I were on the 🏝️ 😀

First try of a rum from Hawaii. Gourmand profile like Barbados or Belize. A bit strong in alcohol for my taste. In the end, it's nice, I'm glad I tried it.

Unfortunately, I can't understand the mostly higher ratings. The rum comes across relatively flat both on the nose and in taste despite the alcohol content of 60%. Adding water does not improve the flavor profile. Everything very restrained, no flavor depth that one could at least somewhat expect despite the young age. Some fruit, some coconut/caramel, that's it. The cask doesn't come through for me at all. I also can't grasp the direction the rum wants to go. Somehow neither fish nor fowl and nothing that hasn't been done much better in the glass before. A pity. I was really looking forward to it, the origin and specs promised a lot. Good thing I only had a sample, the urge to buy this bottle blind was definitely there.

Still what young and spicy, but otherwise a welcome innovation in the international rum concert. Tastes literally "exotic" and peculiar. Especially this coconut, salted almond, roasted banana with a hint of Asia sweet and sour sauce - completely weird. First-class distillate, which with a few more years in the barrel will probably rise to quite great form. Fits well into the claviature of the Pacific, some Fiji, some Nine Leaves and now Hawaii.

On one hand nice to discover a new spot on the rum map, on the other hand I would have guessed Foursquare or Travellers blind. It lacks a bit of uniqueness. Full-on coconut, some vanilla. Little fruit. Alcohol could also be better integrated, although it’s not really disturbing.

Not to be compared with the previously available Koloas.In the nose dominates incredibly much tangerine. In the taste there is a lot of milk chocolate and coconut.Short somewhat bitter finish.I like, gladly more of it, gladly also older.

This fine mix of coconut, vanilla, and toasted oak pleases me from the start. Added is a very nice, invigorating mouthfeel without any alcoholic sharpness, which immediately makes you want the next sip. At over 60% alcohol content, that makes the rum dangerously drinkable. Once again a delicious and high-quality bottling from 'Spirit of Rum'.

I enjoyed drinking it. You can't expect a complexity monster at 5 years, but I find it very good for that! I'm curious what it can do when it's aged 10 years or more in Hawaii. Great fruitiness on the nose, then on the palate with a strong attack, a bit numbing, at the same time it develops a nice creaminess that coats the mouth with delicious cocoa notes. Accompanied by slightly bitter barrel notes with a relatively long finish. I don't need it as a big bottle, but I'm glad to have had a big sample!

Sweetish nose, slightly floral, slightly spicy. Orange-vanilla-almond pastry somehow. Very similar on the palate. Milk chocolate comes through more now. Underlying this slightly floral or perfumed taste. Alcohol quite present, but still within limits.

Read full review ›The whole thing is extremely relaxed on the nose: A mix of fruit, lots of vanilla, a little nutmeg, wood, flowers and burnt sugar unfolds. What an invitation to try the rum straight away. This impression continues in the mouth. Pleasantly spicy, subtle coconut notes, lots of vanilla, a little salt, young wood (so not very bitter) and milk chocolate, licorice and bitter orange. Tastes like a mix of intense Spanish and Foursquare with salt. The Koloa Single Cask has something nutty and creamy about it, the texture reminds us a little of peanut butter.
