CoR Caroni Trinidad No. 4 1998
Sip this one neat and give it real time in the glass — it opens on tar, rubber and burnt sugar, then black tea, dried raisins and oak. Classic Caroni "dirty" character at 62.9%, but with more sweetness and fruit than the darkest ones. One taster called it "little more wood forwards and more dry" than its sibling cask. The heat stays well integrated.

- Well-integrated alcohol
- But: Not top-tier Caroni

Got this sample for free from RumX. It’s a single cask bottling from the legendary Caroni distillery that closed down in 2003. It’s a column still rum distilled in 1998 whereafter it’s tropical aged for 11 years in an ex-bourbon barrel and then continentally aged for an additional 12 years in an ex-whisky barrel before bottled in 2022 in just 250 bottles with a cask strength of 62,9%. Overall a very intense, complex and round rum.

Personally, apart from the raspberry note, I don’t find the Caroni really exciting either on the nose or in taste.

Tasting at J. B. Labat and at the German Rum Festival alongside cask #10. A rather light nose with mechanical workshop notes and quite a lot of fruit. Also a buttery side. The palate is lively but, like the nose, rather balanced between mechanical workshop notes and fruits. The finish is long and delicious, just like the empty glass. A rum with few rough edges but rather balanced. A better nose than cask #10 but the palate is clearly less interesting.

Needs a lot of time in the glass. On the nose, first sweet with burnt sugar, oak wood, dried fruits, leather, rubber, and asphalt (tar). On the palate, a bit more fruity, not as funky as some other Caroni... Leather, rubber, and dark chocolate. Alcohol well integrated. The pour is a bit bitter but still within limits.

Little more wood forwards and more dry than its CoR brother. Intense, dirty, herbal.

16.05.2023 Normally I don't do tastings during the week because I have to go to work pretty early the next day. This blind tasting just stating "Colours of Rum" just tickled my brain to say "book and participate" and I didn't regret it. It wasn't only a great experience, but we had a blast of an evening with many new faces around the table. Caroni's are expensive and so is this one. It stil does pretty well though and the traditional Caroni notes are there. Nose and palate are intense but in a good way. ABV and wood are really well integrated and the fruit takes a backseat here. The palate is lightly oily and medium dry with a herbal touch. The finish is long and kind if fresh and spicy with a light medicinal note.

Nice mix of Caroni funk and dried fruits on the nose, really like it. On the palate, the Caroni funk dominates, accompanied by a pleasant sweetness and spice. The finish continues the palate experience without the sweetness. Without being an expert, I'd say: a typical Caroni.
Review by Serge
A bit less sweetness and fruit on the nose (and palate) than the 98s I've tried so far. Instead, dried thyme on the nose and palate. Especially at the beginning... unfortunately it fades after a while. Overall, I really like it because sometimes the sweetness in the Caronis is really too much for me.

A Caroni within the standards of its Vintage. The nose is rather soft, with caramel candy, coupled with burnt sugar, notes of raisins and roasted hazelnuts. The smoky and petrol side gradually rises without imposing itself. The profile is well balanced and nicely rounded. A conventional but pleasant Caroni. The attack on the palate is marked by the sweet duo of caramel and the petrol notes of tar and rubber. Herbal notes of black tea and exotic fruits mingle with the profile, which is rather dry, intense, and quite dark (roasted hazelnuts, wood, smoke, pepper, chocolate). The profile is quite pleasant, it could be a good "everyday" Caroni. The alcohol is well integrated. The finish is long, focused on well-spiced oak, smoky even burnt, tobacco and hydrocarbons. The tannins and medicinal, herbal, and fruity notes give a nice tone and balance the profile. A Caroni both intense and rounded, with a beautiful aromatic palette. However, it lacks a little something to reach the heights.

I'm not a Caroni expert, but personally I've had better Caronis in the glass. Almost everything I expect from a Caroni is there, but not enough of anything. Still a very good rum, but not top class.

... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing at the height of its glory a rum that was added in a ratio of 1:10 to the naval blend. It was too strong and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. The distillery ended production and was closed in 2000. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who liked the rum precisely for its special taste. And interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of rums "you need to try before you die." I recommend it, Caroni is truly a unique rum.

Notes from Whisky Live Paris 2024 - to be reviewed and deepened. Rubber, prunes, little tea, and maybe a minerality (strange, right?) for this little Caroni. You dream when you see the bottle, but in the mouth, it's not exactly ecstasy. Dark chocolate and light tannins at the end of the mouth.
Review by Andi
Black tea, intense, oak, rubber/tar, dirty notes and a very dry finish.
Review by Jakob
Direct comparison of the 1998 Caronis from Colours of Rum: Consistently typical HTR profiles, No. 4 shows a bit more intensity on the palate. Typical notes of dark spices, light sweetness, and some roasted aromas from the cask.
Review by Vladimír Rejholec (AlkoTip)
The nose is distinctly dry, barrel-like, with a hint of dried wood. After the first sips, it's black tea, dried raisins, with hints of fruits. The taste of an oiled machine, rubber, tar, mixed with slightly sweetened caramel, burnt sugar, coffee, spices, wood and a barrel spreads in the mouth. You want to taste this insanely beautiful madness. The finish is long, warm, with no unpleasant spiciness.

I received this sample already a few years ago, and can't remember who I bought it from. An 24 year old Caroni, of which 11 years were tropically aged. Intense, complex and tasty as expected, but unfortunately too expensive.

A gentle Caroni, at least on the nose. On the palate and finish, Caroni fans get what they want, though there are much dirtier ones out there.

Vintage 1998. I rate it 8.4 out of 10, very good rum.
Review by Winetrader
Le Cask number 9 is absolutely magnificent, you can taste the cane sugar and it's very good. Extremely powerful in the mouth and the tar on the tongue, it's very interesting and it burns a little in the mouth.
Review by Richard Krupa
In the nose tar, on the palate mainly honey, the finish is intense and long

Read full review ›That said the sweeter and fruitier notes make it much approachable. Don't get me wrong this isn't the type of rum you want to be giving someone who is just dipping their toe in the world of aged rum but it's certainly more forgiving that a lot of Cask Strength...
