CoR Hampden Jamaica No. 6 HLCF 1998
For experienced palates: a dry, cask-strength 1998 Hampden HLCF with big esters, tropical fruit (banana, pineapple, mango) and classic rubber/varnish funk over roasted, tannic oak. RumX members praise its power, length and complexity, though some find the alcohol a bit rough for the price. A serious continental‑aged Jamaica that rewards slow sipping and comparison with other 1998 Hampdens rather than an easygoing daily pour.
- Intense ester funk
- Complex tropical fruit
- Long dry finish

Got a sample of this rum for free from RumX. It’s a pot still distilled Hampden distilled in 1998 whereafter it’s continental aged for 23 years in an ex-Rum barrel before bottled in 255 bottles at 61,9%. Overall a great Hampden HLCF that’s complex, funky and esters rich.

#4187 This is not a bad Jamaica especially when looking at the price tag. A nice ester profile with lots of fruit and medium roasted wood profile. The palate is dry and warm and the finish long. Draws nice curtains and the empty glass has some polish and tar.
Review by Thunderbird
Upon opening the sample, that wonderful hampdentypical ester/fruit nose immediately pours out and lingers for a long time. This is joined by a heavy fermented sweetness of tropical flowers. The palate is amazingly balanced... the relationship between fruit, sweetness, wood, esters and alcohol is quite balanced .The finish is more on the woody side.A really good Hampden, but to the top it is still missing something

Crosstasting with RX14117Nose: the range of aromas is noticeably wider. On the palate first quite alcoholic. Mature, well balanced Hampden.Finish fruity-spicy.A very good and strong funky Hampden but without special feature. In this rum, the alcohol is not integrated well enough for me and RX14116 has the more interesting for me aftertaste. Therefore, I give here 3 points less.Bottom line, the two bottlings are more different than I expected.

Unfortunately, rather a weaker representative of the 98 vintage. A profile which I appreciate very much. Benchmark is for me here the RA HD 98 and TRC HD 98 "The Beast". Have the two new bottlings of Colours of Rum directly compare and No.7 is a tad worse than No.6 in my eyes. The longer storage has not done the rum good. Neither in the nose nor on the palate wants to set real HD 98 feeling. In the finish still some woodiness. Price with 220 € for 0.7 liters also sporty settled. No bottle of this will go into my collection. Edition 6 gets 84 points.

Good rum, but for a 1998 HLCF no firecracker. Especially not at the price called. The two (No6 and No7) are very similar. So the almost identical color of the labels is actually almost funny. The 7 wins for me on the naser and the No 6 on the palate

Strong ester in the nose. Very surprising roast finish, similar to poppy seed bread

Relatively poorly integrated alcohol. Somewhat bitter .... Banana, pineapple and a few ester notes make themselves felt in the nose and on the palate .... but they don't make themselves comfortable. Tastes somehow-->like intended but not really "successful". Quite ok no more no less.

Nice Hampden but nothing to write home about as it lacks something that stands out to make it a little more special.

Round and not so aromatic Jamaica. Edit- I bet it is Hampden. My body always reacts with reflux when drinking Hampden :)
Review by crazyforgoodbooze
