CoR Hampden Jamaica No. 6 HLCF 1998
Here's the surprise: 23 years in the barrel didn't fully tame this one. It's classic Hampden HLCF — pineapple, banana, marzipan and that varnish-and-glue funk — but several tasters say the alcohol stays a bit hot and the wood turns dry and slightly bitter at the end. One reviewer clocked a "surprising roast finish," almost like poppy seed bread. Funky and fruit-rich, just not the smoothest of the 1998 vintage.

How does CoR Hampden Jamaica No. 6 HLCF 1998 taste?
Summarized by AI from community reviews.
Funky 23-year Hampden, a touch hot A properly funky, estery Hampden most people rate around 8.3 — good, not the peak of the '98 vintage. The common gripe: heat that isn't quite integrated and a dry, woody, faintly bitter finish.

Got a sample of this rum for free from RumX. It’s a pot still distilled Hampden distilled in 1998 whereafter it’s continental aged for 23 years in an ex-Rum barrel before bottled in 255 bottles at 61,9%. Overall a great Hampden HLCF that’s complex, funky and esters rich.

Basically a solid Hampen in terms of aroma, but unfortunately the alcohol is anything but well integrated. Pungent on the nose, sharp and biting on the palate, also in the finish. A little more resting time might have been good...
Review by SaibotZtar
Relatively poorly integrated alcohol. A bit bitter... banana, pineapple, and some ester notes spread out in the nose and on the palate... but they don't settle in comfortably. Tastes kind of like it was intended but not really "successful." Pretty okay, nothing more, nothing less.
Review by Thunderbird
As soon as you open the sample, this wonderful typical Hampden ester/fruit nose immediately bursts out and lasts for a long time. Along with it comes a heavy fermented sweetness of tropical flowers. On the palate, it's surprisingly well-balanced... the ratio between fruit, sweetness, wood, esters, and alcohol is quite even. In the finish, it leans more towards the woody side. A really good Hampden, but it still lacks a bit to reach the top.

#4187 This is not a bad Jamaica especially when looking at the price tag. A nice ester profile with lots of fruit and medium roasted wood profile. The palate is dry and warm and the finish long. Draws nice curtains and the empty glass has some polish and tar.

Unfortunately rather a weaker representative of the 98 vintage. A profile I really appreciate. For me, the benchmark here is the RA HD 98 and TRC HD 98 “The Beast”. I compared the two new releases from Colours of Rum directly and No.7 is a bit worse than No.6 in my eyes. The longer aging did not do the rum any good. Neither on the nose nor on the palate does the real HD 98 feeling set in. The finish still has some woodiness. At a price of 220€ for 0.7 liters, also quite pricey. Not a single bottle will go into my collection. Edition 6 gets 84 points.

Crosstasting with RX14117 Nose: the range of aromas is noticeably broader. On the palate, initially quite alcoholic. Ripe, well-balanced Hampden. Finish fruity-spicy. A very good and boldly funky Hampden but without anything special. With this rum, the alcohol is not well integrated for me, and RX14116 has the more interesting finish. That's why I’m giving 3 points less here. All in all, the two bottlings are more different than I expected.
Review by Serge
Good rum, but not a hit for a 1998 HLCF. Especially not for the called price. The two (No6 and No7) are very similar. The almost identical color of the labels is therefore almost funny. No7 wins for me on the nose and No6 on the palate.
Review by TheRhumhoe
A rock-hard Hampden! The nose reveals tropical fruits (banana, pineapple) and light marzipan, then spills out a concentrate of esters, nail polish, glue and rubber for a lively, funky and heavy medicinal mix. Wood and spice show up discreetly at the end of the nose. We're not here to get fancy. If the nose already set the tone, the palate sounds like an uppercut to the jaw. The exotic fruit is quickly ousted by powerful esters, varnish, alcohol, spicy, salty and roasted notes. The palate heats up quickly. The rum is dry, harsh, heavy, astringent and dominant. The alcohol could be a little better integrated. The finish sounds like the coup de grâce. Of medium length, it has time to strike on exotic fruits, deliver a few medicinal blows (fermentation, esters) and finish by drying the palate with a salty, spicy and very tannic woodiness. A rather brutal bougre that will delight power lovers, but lacks a little technique and finesse in its gestures and aromas.

Nice Hampden but nothing to write home about as it lacks something that stands out to make it a little more special.
Review by Mentalo
Not the top bottling of the 1998 Hampden vintage. The funk is there, but the alcohol could be better integrated. Quite dry and slightly bitter, woody finish. It's not bad quality, but there are clearly better ones.

Funky, pineapple, wood, ester, lacquer, it stays dry.

Nose : esters, wood did a good work, more rounded than younger iterations, pineapple, rubber Taste : good balance of esters and wood, still intense with kind of an acetic taste but not too overpowering Finish : long, warm, salty, estery Very nice one

Strong ester in the nose. Very surprising roast finish, similar to poppy seed bread

Round and not so aromatic Jamaica. Edit- I bet it is Hampden. My body always reacts with reflux when drinking Hampden :) ... Hampden, legendarni jamajska destilerka, ktera krome rumu produkuje take alkohol do parfemu. Ve vsech rumech z teto destilerky ucitite divoke estery, po kterych cely vas organizmus nasakne vuni zluteho tropickeho ovoce - manga, papaji, anansu, broskvi. Jeden z rumu, ktere "must try before die"
