Got a sample of this rum for free from RumX. Long Pond is known for its ultra-funky, high-ester style of rum, but this one is a VRW which marks quite low esters. It was pot still distilled 2000 whereafter it was continental aged for 21 years in an ex-rum barrel before bottled in 220 bottles at 56,4%. Overall a very light low esters Long Pond that tastes much better (more) than its aromas.

Nose very restrained. Honeydew melon ,banana and some wood . Alcohol not very present. On the palate alcohol more noticeable but not bad . Banana, honey (melon) pleasant light sweetness . Finish then slightly bitter and a little woody. Not bad but somehow very weak in all.

CoR tasting, Rum Club Switzerland. A spicy, fruity nose. Red fruit, candied cherry, a spicy/pungent edge, but also a slightly sticky sweetness. Overall, a little too spicy on the nose. The palate is full-bodied and fruity, but the spiciness of the nose also bothers me. The sweetness is also a little sticky. The finish is short and the sweetness lingers for a long time. A rum with qualities, but lacking the essential balance. Tasted again and with oxidation, the balance is much better.

#4187 This is an OK Long Pond though I would have loved some more kick in the profile. I'd set this one as a light profile Long Pond. Fruity with medium ester and light wood. There is a natural sweetness to it and I like the curtains in the glass. The empty glass has some chocolate and maple to it.

Jamaica No. 8 vs No. 11 vs No. 12 Nose clearly goes to No. 11. very nice basket of fruits and overripe banana. Is this maybe one of the 2000 VRWs vs LPS for the other two? No. 12 is nice with some tropical fruits and spices. No. 8 is dominated by wood and remains sharp even after > 1h in the glas. Taste: 2001 (8) much better on the palate vs on the nose. However, a little thin and unassuming. Not bad, though. 2000 (11) sweet and fruity on the palate as well. Easy going but also quite nice. If anybody knows the mark on this, let me know 🙂 Overall my winner out of the three 1998 (12) also very round and easy going. A little more wood and roasted notes. Feels a little thin and uninspired to me, however.

This is a wonderful rum as an introduction to Jamaica in general and Long Pond in particular. Nose and also at the beginning of the palate appear unimpressive. But after that it really gets going: fruit esters and spice! I like it when a rum delivers a twist like that. Overall, rather a low-ester rum but the Long Pond signature is clearly there.
