Blind, almost nobody pegs this as a Savanna — tasters guessed Guyana, Trinidad, even a sherried Foursquare. Nineteen years of tropical aging piled on wood, spice and dried fruit: plum jam, blackberry, eucalyptus and a menthol streak, ending long and drying. At 67% it needs a long rest and a few drops of water; give it an hour and the fruit finally pushes through the oak.

You don't see an old Savanna like this every day. On the nose, it's a bit restrained, perfumed, and somewhat mineral. On the palate, red fruits come first, which then become increasingly dry and woody. This red thread runs through to the long, somewhat woody and tobacco-focused finish. Very tasty, but I wouldn't have been able to pick out a Savanna blind here. edit: let it sit in the glass a bit longer, about 90 minutes. Wonderful rich cherry aromas joined on the palate. The finish feels a bit oilier and warmer. Letting this rum breathe does it a lot of good!

RumX Advent Calendar 15 - day 14 Very difficult to spot a Savanna into the glass. This rum is really intense, with the alcool burn that is maybe too much, and then coffee and wood can be found easily, a bit in the background the menthol note, and only nosing for a long time, eucalyptus and vinyl notes, typical of savanna, can be found. Drink side Abv is too high to be tamed, them spices and wood conquer the scene. A pity this rum is a way too woody.

Rum Friendly Club Advent Calendar, Day 12. A lovely earthy cellar nose with moisture-attacked wood, pastries, tropical fruit and bitumen. The palate is dark and as if perfumed, an obsolete perfume, with decadent fruit, earth and wood. But a hint of menthol balances this rum. The length is rather short, marked by wood and earthiness. The empty glass brings out discreet bitter wood aromas on the palate, with perfume lingering on top. A perfumed old woman strolls through the rubble of an old wooden house with bitumen patches torn from the roof.

This rum really has two very, very different sides.

Great savanna, with a little time in the glass a lot of aroma develops. The bottling is quite old compared to other bottlings. For me, some fruit is therefore lost. However, this is complaining on a high level and compared to other top bottles of Savanna.

Ultra concentrated. Made of wood. Spicy. Vanilla, woody, heavy, spicy. Long, astringent, dry, spicy finish. Very strong in alcohol! 2nd tasting: similar sensations. It's an intense, ultra-concentrated rum, a bit like some Jamaican rums with their high ester content. The profile may or may not appeal.

Nice and fruity with roasty notes on the nose, fruits in coffee. Alcohol not yet noticeable on the nose, could be better integrated on the palate. But maybe it's just the day's mood, after all it has over 67%. Actually very tasty and I would have liked to give more points, but the finish is a bit too woody for me. The 19 years of tropical aging really show. Despite the long aging, it hasn't completely lost its Agricole character for me. Addendum January 2026: Today I like it very much, wood is just right, alcohol leans more towards powerful and warm rather than disturbing. In April 2026 I finished the sample, together with RX20991, the upcoming RumX bottling. Of course, a completely different base, a completely different profile. And yet this comparison made me realize once again how delicious the Duchess is, and how wide the range of Savanna is.

Edit: RumX Calendar Day 15 just realized that I was probably already quite full at the tasting at the first tasting 😉 Really very tasty rum. I have corrected it upwards. What I remember here is that it was very spicy and strong. But that's all I can really remember after the intense tasting. The nose initially reminded me of a famous detergent.

Very solid Savanna. Old barrel on the nose, dried fruit, plum jam, also slightly musty like in an old wine cellar. Plum jam again on the palate. Long, sweet and spicy finish Very tasty. I would have liked to have had a second bottle now...

Probably the oldest savanna single cask to date. Lots of wood, some cardamom, candied ginger, dried apricot and some peach and menthol. I was hoping for a little more overall, but still good plv, alcohol very well integrated and delicious.

We have a really nice Savanna here. It's very woody and rusty on the nose, on the palate too, but isn't there a nice spiciness here, and eucalyptus is also clearly recognizable. Really tasty rum.

Very spicy and heavy... Alcohol in nose hardly to be perceived on the palate already strong ... I do not mind it. fruit initially rather in the background but comes after ca.45min through and he makes up nicely. the largely tropical storage you notice clearly.

#6504 18.03.2026 Enjoying a few samples while listening to music generated with AI by one of my former colleagues. This is a very nice bottling in my mind. Good balance and very good ABV integration. Need to rest for a while to really open up properly. The nose is fresh and has nice mint, mango and a hint of smoke. The palate is well balanced with roasted wood, nutts and anise. The finish is very long and well balanced with a nice spicy touch and fruits.

A beautiful Savanna! Floral-earthy and marked by a eucalyptus note, this rum shows the typical profile of the distillery (although Savanna has of course very different styles in stock!). In addition, dark and spicy, so that you can taste the 19 years in the barrel quite. Deductions are made for the yet very present alcohol and a slightly clean aftertaste. Overall, however, a tasty bottling as I find, but which is also not cheap!

#24DaysOfRum2023 - Day 15 Superbly multifaceted on the nose with complex structures of fruity, spicy and earthy aromas. After pouring the room fills with crisp, fruity green apple, blackberries and gooseberries intersected with fresh sugarcane, juniper and crushed cloves. Then it redevelops into old red wine territory; tannic with hints of isobutanol, frankincense, tanned hides and overly steeped black tea. The nose is fresh and exciting. I could smell this for hours. On the palate much more concentrated and brought to its absolute essence. Waves of blackberry supported with tannins, dried fruits and old wine cellar. It’s lavish, very sweet and rich, and somehow remniscent of a great Demerara. Ends seemingly endless with a similar sensation to that late night after dinner espresso; dry, rich and exciting. A perfect end to an evening. I regret not blind buying a bottle of this.

Surprisingly, I had the impression of having a Guyana in my mouth. Very woody, peppery and spicy, a hint of caramel with a nice roundness. A fine product! Edit: Now that it's opened, I also have cherry alcohol on the nose and red fruits. Superb.

A great very intense rum. The high alcohol content is clearly noticeable here. But that is not a drawback. The nose is first a bit closed but then comes with a great fruit / barrel mixture with a pleasant freshness. The palate is under the influence of the barrel. Nicely astringent. All intense and powerful. Great. However, not much has remained of the Agricole.

RumX Calendar23 Day 15 I guessed a Foursquare with a sherry finish 😅 Incredibly good nose with lots of cookie dough from the Christmas bakery. Nice woody, sweet, spicy palate. So far, together with the PM 1997, my favorite from the calendar.

It takes its time in the glass, but when it comes in full, I find it really great. I like to compare it (also cross-tasted) with the Savanna 2004 Cronicles, both have very similar color and aromas, although the Duchess is a little less intense, but rounder and, in my opinion, also broader in overall taste. I have given it the stamp "favorite rum" and hopefully it will remain part of the Private Stock for a long time to come. I am surprised that it is still available despite only 238 bottles and this quality.

RX calendar day 15 Great mouth feel. Quite dense and hot. From unusual notes there's something like pine shoots or maybe eucalyptus. Alcohol really well integrated. However I made it wait for 50-60 minutes.

Blind verkostet und ich hatte keine Ahnung was im Glas war. Sehr ungewöhnlicher Savanna. Sehr kräftig, jede Menge Fasseinfluss. Durch die starke Mentholnote hatte ich auf Trinidad getippt. Leider weit daneben. Trotzdem gefällt er mir sehr gut. Für eine Topbewertung ist er mir allerdings etwas zu würzig. Der fruchtige Gegenpart kommt nicht ganz dagegen an. Trotzdem lecker und ein Dank an Manuel für das Sample.

A very fresh eucalyptus scent that will stretch even my stuffy nose. Taste-wise, it's also an herbal bomb, reminiscent of some throat medication etc. Quite strong at first due to the high Abv, but I definitely like this.

Bold rum, orgy of flavours (a few drops of water may open the variety of aromas), great alchohol integration for 67%. Maturation in tropical conditions. Oak, spices, jam, brine, dark chocolate, leather, varnish, sweet&sour fruits, roasted nuts, tobacco, umami. Requires and rewards patience. Edit: this Dutchess benefits from aeration. Additional notes of mint and motor oil in the background. Tastes bellow 67% - a true mastercraft. 90 points for me.

Very nice, distinctive Savanna. Already in the aroma the strength of the alcohol is evident, the toasted, woody and eucalyptus notes also peel off the fruit after some time (20-30 minutes?). The palate is very intense, pungent and rich, and in addition to the things already mentioned, an earthiness emerges. Recommended.

Last Savanna double tasted yesterday with pal Selvam Carlier: Savanna 2008 Excellence Rhum - 63% A super-exciting old Savanna. The nose reveals lovely aromas of apple, mint and cherry. The nose is super fresh and enchanting. On the palate, the profile is a little heavier than the nose, bitter with cocoa and pepper, and light camphor aromas. On the finish, there's coffee and a pleasant bitterness. A superb bottling with fine balance and perfect integration of the 63%. I wouldn't mind having a bottle in the cellar 🥹 Savanna The Duchess 2003 - 67.2% Only a 4% difference, but the feeling is quite different. It's frankly less well-balanced. It's ultra-concentrated. There's wood and spice. It's heavy but unfortunately pungent. The finish is long but unfortunately too pungent and astringent. Too alcoholic, unfortunately. You either like the profile or you don't. I've chosen my camp...
