Chairman's Reserve Master's Selection (Perola) 2006
Sipped neat and given 15-30 minutes to settle, this drinks dark and port-soaked: dried fig, prune and raisin over toasted coconut, dark chocolate and roasted oak, with a little glue peeking through. At 60% the alcohol shows, and the ex-port cask runs the show — several tasters say the Saint Lucia base nearly disappears. Dry up front, turning sweeter, with cinnamon and nutmeg spice.

Port-heavy, coconut-and-chocolate cask-strength sipper Most rate it highly for its port-driven dark-fruit-and-chocolate character, and one calls it a "daily sipper." The recurring catch: the port dominates and the Saint Lucia identity gets buried.

This rum delivered an impressive experience for me. The nose bursts with rich aromas of wine, honey, roasted nuts, dark chocolate, and hints of wood. On the palate, the rum is full-bodied, dense, and packed with tropical fruits, berries, dark chocolate, and spices. The balance of sweet/sour fruity notes and spicy ones keeps it engaging and dynamic throughout. The finish is equally satisfying with tobacco, oak, dried fruits, and a nutty, wine-like complexity that lingers. It’s bold, flavorful, and definitely a rum I’d want to have a full bottle of.

Note: Employment at Perola GmbH (spirits industry), partial professional involvement with the evaluated bottlings. All reviews are my personal, unpaid opinion. 16y tropical aging 100% Coffey Column Still Ex bourbon + 3y Ex Port cask, 60.1%. Nose: dark chocolate, roasted coconut chips, herbs, port wine, toffee, caramel candy, banana, a bit of glue, some cardboard, cherry Taste: Brutally delicious, mocha, dark chocolate, cardamom, coconut, grape, nutmeg, dried plum, port wine present everywhere, baked apples, banana, cinnamon bark, cassis... nice tannins and long finish. First dry then becoming sweeter. Could be a blind mix for me of 94 New Yarmouth and 98 Foursquare, plus of course the port influence. Very cool, super complex and for me a really nice daily sipper.

The bottling no longer has much to do with a familiar St. Lucia. Nevertheless, a solid rum with very complex aromas. It tends towards 94NY but at a very good price, so it's definitely a great rum. But anyone expecting Lucia will be disappointed.

You can clearly smell and taste the port influence. Personally, this 'finish' (if you can still speak of it after three years of maturation) is too much for me. I could no longer blindly identify the base. All in all, however, a good rum, a successful experiment, especially for port fans! Tasting again: I stand by my conclusion. A very good rum, but not enough Lucia for me.

01.02.2025 retasting at the Nordlichtertreffen. Earned a few more points. ------------------------- #4115 This one needs to rest for a while before giving it a go. Right from the bottle it's really intense but it settles after 15-30 minutes. Lightly fruity with powerful roasted wood. I like the mix of flavours but it's not perfect. The palate is nice and warm and lightly dry with some dried fruit. Draws thick slow moving curtains in the glass. The empty glass has some chocolate and light coffee. After a few hours roasted wood is left in the glass.

With Chairman's Reserve bottlings, you can be almost certain that you've got a great rum. This one is also very good. It is somewhat reminiscent of DomWhisky's Chairmans, but with less fruit, more wood and a little bitterness, which bothers me a little here. At the first tasting, I gave it 5 points more. 8,6:On the nose, port and glue, herbaceous, earthy molasses, toasted coconut, raisins, grapes, toasted oak with nuts, coffee, dark chocolate, strong, spicy, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, the rum becomes dry, yellow fruits arise, various smoky, roasted notes like burnt sugar, confectionery, leather, some rubber. 8,3:On the palate, the attack is delicious at first, syrupy with port barrel finish and with various roasted oak notes like coffee, burnt sugar, caramel, hazelnut ice cream, dark chocolate, nougat, spicy and salty, fruity with raisins, prunes, coconut, banana, citrus fruits and berries. The molasses is earthy with tobacco, dark with licorice...Our tasting buds are quickly occupied with intense dryness, slightly bitter resinous wood, that lowers my grade for 0,3. 8,4:The finish is more balanced, dry&tannic, dryness diminshed, with smoky roasted wood notes, creamy, slightly resinous, spicy, pairing fruits like toasted coconut, red and citrus, dried fruits, minty molasses, rubber... Edit:25.4.26

This rum has the same basic conditions as the Saint Lucia from Rum&Co (5th bottling). The nose is a bit weaker, but the mouthfeel is noticeably more pleasant. Also bitter, but overall with a higher share of pleasant aromas (berries, caramel, milky, chocolate, vanilla). The great nutty aromas are also worth highlighting.

I don't like it. Normally I find a Port finish quite interesting, but not with this rum. Because it doesn't build on a subtle base spirit, but on a felt highly concentrated mix of NY 94 and FS, with both components tugging at each other like in a heavyweight boxing match. A tiring rum.

I was looking for a strong colum still rum as an addition to my shelf and as an occasional premium mixer for Old Cuban. The rum has already proven itself in the latter function. Here, the port slightly clashed with the apple of the sparkling wine - although I think it goes very well with a tart Rose Champagne. On its own, you get a full load of coconut combined with a rather fruity, dark red wine nose. Raisins, but also raspberry and grapes. Plus a few spices from the wood, especially cinnamon and some roasted aromas. I like that and it's what I was hoping to find. Reminds me a little of Guyana Column Still. In the mouth, the first thing that flashes up is raspberry, followed by dark chocolate. Unfortunately, as is often the case with Chairman's, a moderate alcohol integration interferes, with a rather sour and bitter attack. A dark aroma of heavy red wine and dark chocolate then develops. The rather delicate fruits from the nose hardly have a chance until the finish. Then they reappear, especially a great mixture of coconut and salty raspberry. A beautiful Colum Still that could have scored much higher if it had been a little more balanced in the mouth. The mixture of raspberry, coconut and dark chocolate is a real highlight.

Exciting. The port finish brings a new dimension to the St. Lucia profile. On the one hand, this bottling lacks a few of the nuances of the classic St. Lucia profile - this may also be due, at least in part, to the pure column style distillate. Boredom does not arise, however, because the final storage in ex-port casks brings many new impressions. Rather suitable for port lovers than for St. Lucia purists, but all in all quite a round profile.

Number #3 of my Saint Lucia Tasting. This is a cool rum with a really nice port finish — the port adds a pleasant touch. On the palate, you’ll find lovely notes of various berries. The finish is long and sweet, with a hint of eucalyptus. It’s absolutely delicious.

From HanseSpirit '26. Almost a leftover, but with Chairman's Master's Selections you rarely go wrong. At first I wasn't sure about this one, since I'm not into Port Finish at all. But luckily this was a dry Port, and it fits very well: Nose: very intense and concentrated, spicy and fruity aromas. Pleasant caramel-vanilla sweetness with dried apricot and prune, blackcurrant and ripe gooseberry as well as fine blood orange. Also malty-smoky-woody with a hint of tobacco. In the middle it leans slightly towards clove with apple cider vinegar, but finishes malty-smoky-sweet. Wonderful 8.8 Palate: strong and woody-spicy with bitter orange and orange peel, as well as dried apricot. Initially quite astringent, slightly salty-bitter with nutmeg and a hint of caraway. Also nutty and with some mocha. Tobacco also appears at the back of the palate. 8.4 Nice column still with a successful Port Finish. Very round rum.

Good, like most Chairmans. Although this one comes across very woody.

Blind, I would have guessed more towards Foursquare or New Yarmouth 1994. Saint Lucia DNA clearly in the background. But an absolute recommendation for port fans.

First tried at the village with Serge, now again calmly at home. Super tasty bourbon... almost :-) Exactly this kind of rum is why I now also drink bourbon. Very intense, dry, wood, nuts, vanilla. Like it! Alcohol very well integrated.

I think the port influence adds some pep to the column still distillate. I prefer pot still St. Lucia, but I believe the port cask is helpful in this case.
Review by TheRhumhoe
A rum from Saint Lucia that loses some of its identity. The nose is heavy with liqueur and sweet notes brought by the aging in port casks, especially on raisins, prunes, and nuts. The profile is mellow despite a strong alcohol presence, in which you can discern coconut, chocolate, coffee, caramel, and mild spices (pepper, vanilla). The olfactory profile is not unpleasant but is a bit too altered by the port in my opinion. The port does not sneak past the palate. You find dried fruits (raisin, prunes), red fruits, nuts (coconut), mild spices, coffee, and dark chocolate complementing notes of burnt sugar and caramel. The rum is good but the port completely takes over the rest of the aromas, erasing the base profile entirely. The alcohol remains well integrated thanks to the sweetness of the port. The finish is not the most convincing with a feeble length and ultra-dominant port notes. You feel the rather refined tannins of the cask that dry out the profile, matching the dried fruits and spices described earlier. A gourmand and easy-drinking rum that will delight fans of the genre but does not step out of its comfort zone. A 6-month finish would have been wiser to see the impact of aging without completely supplanting the base rum profile.
Review by Rumpalumpa
With this pure column-still St. Lucia, the funky-floral aromas are missing. But there are dark dried fruits from the port wine cask and still some glue. I can understand why it is often compared with NY 94.

St Lucia is a distillery that I have had the pleasure of tasting many, many times and I have to admit to being a fan - I am fascinated by this unique funky & dirty base note. This nuance gives the drink an unmistakable personality and makes it an interesting experience. Unfortunately, however, I couldn't find the desired balance in the taste. The alcohol content was too dominant for my taste, which detracted somewhat from the overall experience. I suspect that the use of a column distillation may play a role here, as my favorite Lucias often come from pot distillations and have a more balanced flavor profile. Too bad! Probably why it's still available.

I really like the dark notes, the woodiness, the caramel and the port wine notes on the nose. The taste continues in a straightforward manner, with some dark chocolate added here. It warms up when you drink it, the drop has oomph.

Northern Lights meeting 2025: Nose first glue, caramel, red fruit. Nice wood notes. On the mouth strong, with really good spice, somewhat sweetish and lots of red fruit. Medium to long finish. I like it.
Review by Skyfly
Port wine barrel always present and unfortunately not my thing even though I love port wine. Would have guessed Guyana from the taste due to strong coconut, dried fruits and wood/barrel aromas. Alcohol very well integrated. Not a bad rum, but just not my finish.
Review by zabo
All in all not bad, I had already tried it at the fair back then. Not quite the usual Chairman’s profile, which is not bad. But to be honest, I find the price a bit exaggerated, that was the reason why I didn’t grab one at the fair.

If I want to drink port wine, I reach for port, is significantly cheaper.

A good Chairman that doesn't quite suit my taste.

Trade fair rating Village 25: The Column Chairman’s are also rums at a very high level, but compared to the Pot Stills they always come up short. Still a high-quality rum, where the port finish is not too intrusive. Update 17.01.26: For me, it’s a bit ahead of Rum & Co., as the alcohol is better integrated and the port finish less intrusive.
Review by Basti
The Port finish is quite dominant. That makes the rum quite drinkable, but other notes unfortunately disappear into the background. Blind, I probably wouldn't have guessed St. Lucia.
Review by Schnubbii
Nice one, nicely red-fruity and dry. No pine forest like I found in the Chairman's for cherry. The finish is rather short. Tasty!

Looking at column SLDs: Rhum Attitude, Berry Bros, Perola. RA and BB are very column forwards. While both are nice rums, this style does not provide the profile I enjoy from SLD‘s pot stills. If you are a fan of Foursquare and similar profiles, this is for you. Very good rums without a doubt, just not my favorite out of Saint Lucia. Perola: while not a fan of Port finishes usually, this one is nicely executed. Yet it is very much overwhelming the profile (which I supsect is just not very powerful on its own, akin to the both other column bottlings). Nice bottling. Nothing I do gravitate to, however.

Smells like chocolate and coconut. For me, a bit too strong on the alcohol taste. But exciting on the finish. Good drop.
