Bitter orange peel and cooked strawberry lead, then wood, leather, vanilla and a mineral streak of mint and menthol that lingers on a long, dry, tannic finish. This is the classic '98 Bellevue column-still profile at 24 years — fruity up front, wood-driven underneath, spicy in the tail. Most tasters rate it highly; a few find it a touch light or flat for the vintage. Rest it and it opens beautifully.

Guadeloupe 1998 Bellevue I've had quite a few by now but never one like this: it actually reminds me of the old Courcelles from 1972 with that intense strawberry jam and bitter orange marmalade note, rounded out by some wood, leather, vanilla, ginger, a touch of orange blossom water, menthol/mint, and slightly bitter black tea. Really awesome and very elegant, and above all unusual for this vintage! I really like it and it gets better the more I sip it...

On the nose, an unpleasant sour smell of vomit. There I still thought, ui, that can not become anything. But on the palate - yes, I got over myself and tasted - the tide turns (attention: after quite some time of breathing!). A really round, quaffable rum gives itself the honor, the alcohol is almost too well integrated (wants to say: that would have tolerated a few more watts). For me, overall a rum with two faces at a price that is unfortunately clearly too high.

This Bellevue is quite pleasant to drink. The aromas are not quite as pronounced, but are still well defined in their variety. The blend of fruit, spice and wood harmonize well together. The alcohol is well chosen. Another good '98 Bellevue.

Nose: more akin to the CoR. While a bit ahead, it also lacks depth and complexity. A bit lighter. By no means terrible but just does not deliver as much excitement than other bottlings. Palate: nice creamy texture. Pastrie sweetness. It‘s tasty, but again not interesting enough to make it into the top notch.

Beautiful 1998 Bellevue with lots of citrus zest (orange, lemon and pommeranze) and fresh as well as preserved strawberries, wood, ginger and preserved pears. Oddly enough, it gives off a bit of alcohol despite being (noticeably) diluted. Also a bit bitter on the finish. I like the nose better. Not the strongest 1998 Bellevue

Actually a very fine rum. I just wonder a little whether the ABV is really cask strength or whether it hasn't been diluted a little. At least that's my impression. You have to admit, after I've had several in my glass, it's not bad, but its competitors are just a tad better. I also think the price is a little too high.

#4127 Despite the age the wood and ABV is pretty well integrated once rested for a good while. The glass can be nosed from a good distance and I like it a lot. Fruity with especially cherry and nice roasted wood. The profile os light and mild in a way and at the same time warm and spicy on the palate. Draws thick slow moving curtains in the glass. The empty glass has light mint and baking spices to it.

Extremely fruity nose! I get a variety of fruits like berries, banana, plums, pear, orange... Also sweets (caramel/syrup) and finally wood/vanilla. Very round! On the palate also very harmonious and tasty, maybe a bit bitter and spicy. Woody and earthy (cask-heavy) finish medium to long. Very good drop!

8,5:On the nose, sweet, fermented sugarcane hints, overripe red fruits like strawberry, some pears, baked apple, dried fruits and grapes, flowery molasses, roasted wood notes like chocolate, pastry, spicy with allspice, ginger, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, the orange is bitter, orange peel arises, some currants, slightly pungent, then tannins, the molasses is earthy with tobacco, dark with black tea.Vanilla an caramel help to balance this pungency... 8,5:On the palate, the attack is slightly sweet with fermented red fruits, banana, bitter orange, later grapes, green fruits and currants, roasted cedar notes like pastry, burnt sugar, leather, spicy, as the molasses is grassy, flowery, herbaceous, fresh with tea, eucalyptus. 8,3:The finish is long, dry&tannic, slightly furry, with toasted oak, spicy, sugarcane hints, flowery, minty, earthy molasses, dark with black tea, fruits like orange, dried and red fruits.

Cross-tasting with seven bottlings from Royal Cane. This one, together with the 17-year-old Foursquare, comes just after the Fiji. Overall, however, none of the bottlings convinced me.

The basic profile of the Royal Cane actually has everything you need for a good '98 Bellevue. Red fruits, wood and, with longer ageing, spices also come through. But in direct comparison to the KD, it is flatter due to its low alcohol content. Even though I wouldn't say it's watery. Unfortunately too expensive compared to other 98s.

A good barrel pick of bellevue 1998, the ABV is reduced at the right point to keep intact the profile without impairing the delivery of flavour. Tastewise, it's the usual Bellevue 1998 profile, wood driven with bitter orange and banana, spices and some sweet notes. Compared to other recent Bellevue, it's a bit more wood driven, but this is not a negative aspect.

On The Rocks: On the nose has a mild fruit and floral notes with some sweetness with oak/earthy undertones. Taste is well balanced and very smooth with fruit, floral and sweetness evolving into underlying mint and menthol with am oaky warmth. Finish is long and smooth with continuing mint and fruit flavours with a last warmth. The mint and menthol starts to get a little stronger in the finish as it keeps going on and on before fading away. Such a beautiful complex rum that is incredibly unique and special.

I've tasted it a few times now, and this one has a very unique flavor for me. I can't compare it to anything else. Apparently, it's my first time trying Bellevue from '98 😁 But it's definitely got me. I've often said that I find this one so unique that I'll pour it alongside my other rums one evening. Most people I've tasted it with didn't like the flavor. I can appreciate it, though.
