Christian de Montaguère HSE Single Cask by CDM (Christian de Montaguère) 2013

Most tasters land in the same happy place here: a wood-and-spice Martinique agricole where the palate outshines a nose that a couple of people call a little shy. Expect vanilla, leather, cane, red fruit and dark chocolate, with an oddly minty freshness on a very long finish. Several call it among the better HSE bottlings they've had.

The community says
  • Long menthol finish
  • Complex spicy palate
  • But: Slightly restrained nose

This rum has all the qualities of a great AOC Martinique, with an elegance and a subtle finesse that make it an excellent rum.On the nose, a fine woody, a sweetness of roasted pineapple compote, a hint of vanilla, fruit in alcohol. In the mouth, we find the same aromas as in the nose with the cigar box and the leather which sign an old rum of almost 9 years of breeding. The finish is extremely long, on spices and the sweetness of ripe fruits.

The nose starts out with notes of apple and anise. This gets more vegetal and floral with tea and a hint of fennel. I also get some red fruit and tobacco. The taste brings less fruit and is more spicy and nutty. I specifically get wallnuts and allspice. The finish is minty and fresh with some grapefruit.

Guter Agricole. Grasige Noten mit einer angenehmen Süße. Bisschen Frucht, bisschen Holz. Nase und Abgang könnten etwas intensiver sein.

Avg Rating 8.0/10 over 330 Rums

Le Simon is Martinique's ghostwriter. It is the island's most technologically advanced distillery, yet it sells no rum under its own name, runs no public tours, and ages nothing on site. Instead it distils two of the most beloved names in Martinique agricole, HSE and, until recently, Clement, on stills moved here from their original homes. What you taste as HSE is, in fact, Le Simon.
