Milano Rum Festival & Barmetro DDL Versailles 2006

Sip this one neat and slow — it's a 16-year Versailles single pot still from Demerara, all dried plum, licorice, old wood and burnt caramel, with a roasty edge several tasters loved. One reviewer caught an odd fruit-schnaps note up front that fades as it opens. A couple of people found it slightly "watered down" and thin on the palate, but the nose and the long dry licorice finish win most over.

Aggregated from 53 community reviews.

Dry, roasty Demerara with licorice and plum Well-liked Versailles: dried fruit, licorice and roasty oak with a long dry finish. The catch — a few found the palate thin or watered-down, and the wood can dominate.

Another fine representative of the Versailles REV. To be fair to each other, I'd have to compare them together. I must say I really like these profiles, they're right up my alley. So I'll give it the same score as the RomDeLuxe collectors, because I find it just as pleasing!

24.02.2024 Great tasting event at Whisky Watcher with food and lots of bottles. Retasting and I stick to my initial score. ------------------------ #4504 02.12.2023 Nice release with medium fruit and spices. The palate is lightly oily with medicinal notes and a light dryness to it. The finish is medium to long with some dried fruit and licorice. The empty glass has a light caramel and faint chocolate note.

Very impressive inviting nose with all typical fine demerara notes. On the palate it starts a bit different with a bitte note like a fruit schnaps, but if you keep it longer in mouth you’ll get it. It opens a lot more and come back to it’s demerara notes. Very good. The alcohol is integrated well, as the barrel. The finish is quite long and dry with a lot of licorice and oak notes with remains in mouth a long time. If there wouldn’t be those fruit schnaps notes, i would add 3 more points

Nicely balanced Profil with some dried fruits. Unfortunately, there is a watered down sensation on the palate which costs this one some points.

Tasted together with the Rome de Luxe Guyana REV 2006! They are quite similar... but the Milano has a bit more of the classic flavors and the mineral! That gives im a few points more!

Perhaps not quite appropriate to the celebration of the day, but still a very accessible rum. Really very nice roasty, I like that very much. What I miss a little, are a certain variety of flavors and fruitiness. Nevertheless, a solid rum that does not overwhelm.

The nose pleases me really well. Taste me then a little too dominant bitter / licorice notes. Nevertheless, a delicious rum.

Unsurprisingly, the 2006s are quite similar on the nose: dried fruit, subtle spicy and woody notes. What stands out for me in direct comparison is a mineral note that also remains present on the palate. In addition, the obligatory dried plum, leather, licorice, wood, some roasted aromas and caramel sweetness. Aromatic with an appealing complexity. For me, the slight minerality is the most recognizable feature. Overall balanced and with pleasant alcohol integration. In contrast, however, the other 2006s bring significantly more aromatic complexity, here everything seems a little too dull in comparison. We remain at a high level, no question, but in the slipstream of the other representatives of the vintage. In comparison to the 1994 representatives, I repeat my impressions of the other 2006s: much less heaviness, the plum notes appear here more in tandem with currants, the dark tones of wood, licorice, leather and caramel are much less pronounced. Despite the aromatic complexity of this bottling, I am inclined to call it "REV Light". The spectrum of the 2006s also has its charm and the character is undoubtedly recognizable, but in my eyes the REV profile benefits greatly from the long ageing and the resulting complexity. However, the reference points for the younger bottlings can also be described as almost unfair, especially for proven lovers of the 1994 REVs.

Demerara Distillers Ltd

Avg Rating 7.8/10 over 250 Rums

Demerara Distillers is the company that ended up holding everything. As Guyana's only surviving rum maker, its Diamond plant runs the world's last wooden pot stills and the last wooden Coffey still alongside modern columns, draws 24 different marks from them, and blends them into El Dorado. It is also the reason most Demerara on the shelf comes from one address.
