LMDW J. Bally Millésime 2000

Made for people who already love old-school agricole and don't mind a lot of cask. This 17-year Martinique juice from Saint James, bottled at 58% by LMDW, leans hard into wood, spice and leather, with a minty-eucalyptus lift at the end and flashes of cherry, cocoa and dark fruit. Several tasters found the wood almost too dominant; the strength is remarkably well hidden.

The community says
  • Well-hidden alcohol
  • Deep wood and spice
  • But: Wood can dominate

RumX Advent Calendar, 2.12., blind. Had the already times to 30.3.20 in the glass. First impression: the must have a sherry finish. This impression has lasted a long time, only after 1h was the perceived sherry nose gone and it came through a bit Agricole... Nose: powerfully aromatic and complex, tobacco and a slight menthol note out the back. There's red wine or sherry and some tropical fruit, maybe papaya. Wood with vanilla, light vinegar and some cocoa butter. Palate: strong and spicy again, fruity and tart like blackcurrant, woody and a bit bitter. Increasingly minty and grassy at the back, like dry eucalyptus.... Surprised positively. Good drop!

#2 RumXCalendar Blind tasting: Classic Agricole in the nose with notes of cedar wood, caramel, citrus, wood, floral, earthy. In mouth it‘s very elegant, full body with notes of fruity notes, wood, leather, licorice. The finish is medium long and woody. Prediction: J. Bally, approx 15 years, 45%. Alcohol is integrated very well. Nose: agricole, cedarwood, citrus, leather, floral, prunes Mouth: full bodied, dry, elegant, leather, oak, licorice, earthy, fruity Finish: medium oak, earthy, tobacco, minty, oak, tannins, astringend, vanilla, leather

Really woody and tannic..this is the feeling I've drinking this rhum. On the nose besides the wood plenty of spices, including coriander which brings some almost soapy notes, plus some agrumes. Drink side, wood is dominant and brings bitternes and astringency. Spices are still here with the soapy note. It's not exactly soap, maybe the solid soap from my childhood is a better similarity.

Avg Rating 8.1/10 over 250 Rums

Saint-James is Martinique's biggest distillery and one of the oldest names in bottled rum, founded in 1765 and still selling a square bottle it trademarked in 1882. It holds the largest stock of aged rhum in the French Antilles, runs what may be the world's best distillation museum, and its old vintages and J. Bally bottlings are among the most loved Martinique rums on RumX.
