Sipped neat from the tasting glass, this unaged Hampden reads more like an Obstler than a rum: green apple, cut grass, lime and pineapple skin over a spirity, slightly bitter core. As the lowest-ester OWH mark, it's the light, wild one of the 8 Marks set. Fruit is there, but several tasters found it rough and a bit "charakterlos" without cask time.

I was still missing this 8 Mark. Definitely not one of the best, though, rather at the back. Burns a little. Fruits such as bananas can be tasted well in the taste and smell.

31.07.2026 Retasting with my good friend and this is still a pretty decent experiment. This one goes very well in a cola actually. --------------- No doubt this is unaged. Rather in your face and a bit out of balance, but the fruit is there.

The first in the 8-mark series and tasted again a year later with a better score. The tasting was very similar to that of last year. A very chalky nose at first, followed by fruit, lots of fruit, banana, prickly pear. A racy, well-balanced palate with clear raspberry alcohol. A sharp but long finish. The empty glass brings a sweetness in addition to the fruit. A highly aromatic rum that's sure to be interesting. It starts very well.

In the best weather, tried all 8 HD Marks yesterday and re-tried again this evening with notes. A totally exciting, informative and wertgiges set and with real aha experience. Important insight... pour and taste right away. Long airing makes almost all fine flavors evaporate. But in detail: Nose: clearly dishwashing liquid with orange, still green tangerine peel and lime. Seems quite fresh as a result. Interestingly, it also has something of cherry yogurt. Esters are actually not to be heard. The max. 80 then probably come from the after all 3 days fermentation. Palate: slightly spicy, slightly bitter, but still quite mild for 60%. Has a somewhat spicy start, with a hint of caraway or cardamom. Fruit is there only in the background, lime with some orange peel. Rather, it seems somewhat veggie-like, with green leaves and fresh branches as well as mineral. In the finish, it becomes somewhat salty and reminiscent of a fruit schnapps. Hamden DNA is yet to really be found. Moreover, difficult to grade...

Know the chemistry of your Hampden rum! The 8-mark set is very informative and educational. The OWH mark has the lowest ester content, but comes with a mild nose of sour fruit. Furry, musty and sour in the mouth, as you would expect. Rather mediocre and somewhat weak without barrel ageing.

Big Hampden 8 Marks Collection Tasting OWH unaged: little ester, tropical fruits, but not really more definable. Has something of fruit brandy. Burns very slightly on the finish. Alcohol nevertheless well integrated.

The Mark OWH does not really make sense to me as a white rum. Tropically stored the rum wins, but unstored it is rather uninteresting.

Could pass blind as apple brandy. Quite a lot of nail polish remover and solvent on the nose, plus an unusual smokiness and a slightly salty finish. There are virtually no esters, but the alcohol is quite present. Rather uninteresting overall.

8,2:On the nose, medicinal with esters, solvents, rubber, smoky, fresh, grassy molasses, citrus and tropical fruits like banana and pineapple, some confectionery, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, the molasses is earthy, floral, fresh with tea, slightly metallic patina is obvious, spicy anise, burnt, meaty tones join, mango, green apple and orange arise. 7,3:On the palate, the attack is medicinal, heavy, sharp, smoky, fruity with tropical, citrus fruits like lemon, green apple, sour, fruit schnapps hints arise, molasses is grassy, vegetal, briny, bitter, mineral and slightly floral, musty, spicy and nutty touch joins, when the rum is well rested, creamy. 7,1:The finish is short, dry, chemical, smoky, meaty with BBQ, bacon, the molasses is green, grassy with hay, earthy, briny, bitter, fruity with overripe tropical, citrus, green fruits, some raspberry, fruit schnapps hints are present.

spannendes Tasting. Einige waren für mich überraschenderweise äusserts lecker und schmackhaft. Die allseits beliebte Destilliere in einem anderen Licht. Das Grundprodukt in dieser Form zu versuchen hat seinen Reiz. Die Reife durch die Lagerung ist dann doch eine andere Hausnummer. Ich hab am Schluss alle 8 Marks zusammen geschüttet und 3 Wochen stehen gelassen, ich muss sagen Top. Alle 8 zusammen ergeben echt ein gutes Profil.

Not quite as good as the LFCH. But of course very similar to it. I taste and smell citrus fruits here. Also, this rum tastes very alcoholic. Probably better enjoyed with cola or used for cooking.

OWH ungelagert gg. OWH 1.Jahr gelagert: Der ungelagerte ist zu Anfang schwer zu trinken. Sehr sprittig und sonst nichts. Mit etwas Standzeit kommen dann zumindest ein paar fruchtige Noten durch. Das eine Jahr im Fass bewirkt keine Wunder, aber die sprittige Noten sind deutlich weniger (vor allem im Abgang noch). Leichte Süße und deutlich mehr Fruchtnoten kommen durch. Hat auf jeden Fall von der Lagerung profitiert.

On the nose it's light and slow to come, but green apple wanders amidst cut grass. On the palate quite a bit of acidity and a eau de vie, calvados side. Finish a bit burnt on plastic, not very pleasant, but a background of pineapple saves the tasting.

The lowest ester mark and the first one of the 8 Marks set tasted. On the nose it brings the classic Hampden profile of tropical fruits - banana, pineapple, mango. Also citrus, a spicyness and vegetal notes. The palate carries the tropical fruits and vegetal but also more citrus/ lemon. Some bitterness and mustyness in the finish alongside some residual fruit notes. Overall not bad, but nothing to write home about and the bitterness in the finish was a detractor.

Hampden 8 Marks Collection - Aged vs. Unaged: The unaged OWH is surprising. Both on the nose and palate fruitier than expected. Has something of a fruit brandy, but overall drinkable. On the palate also quite sweet, plus some spiciness. Conclusion: none of the 16 rums was a pleasure and the rating is only to be understood relatively among themselves. Still very interesting to try all Marks under the same conditions and taste the different expressions of fruit, glue, spice and surprisingly often umami. Soon a set with 3-5 years in cask?

Part of today's 8 marks tasting with Daniele from Velier. For OWH I expected a very light profile given the ester count, still gives you some flavour with alot of sour notes and a mustiness.

... Hampden, the legendary Jamaican distillery that besides rum also produces alcohol for perfumes. In all rums from this distillery, you can feel wild esters, after which your whole body soaks in the scent of yellow tropical fruits - mango, papaya, pineapple, peach. One of the rums you "must try before you die."

OWH is a quality spirit with bright fruity notes. Pineapple peel, fleshy green leaves. There are some hints of aromatic tails. Prickly, but drinkable.

➡️ OWH: nice surprise. Citrus, freshness and perfectly integrated alcohol. ➡️ LFCH: more discreet, flatter. The least convincing of the series. ➡️ LROK: things get serious. Pineapple, ripe fruits, acetone... Complex and already very Hampden. My favorite of the first half. ➡️ HLCF: arrival of varnish notes and the famous "funk." Interesting, but still a bit linear. 🚀 Second series: welcome to the ester stratosphere ➡️ <>H: the heart of Hampden. Exotic fruits, banana, complexity and balance. The typical profile of the distillery. ➡️ HGML: the fruits recede, pastry and almond paste notes take over. ➡️ C<>H: no joke here. Nail polish remover, explosive acidity and impressive aromatic concentration. ➡️ DOK: the legend. An avalanche of fruits, pastry, funk and yet an amazing harmony. My absolute favorite of the evening. ❤️ 🎯 The big surprise? We organized this tasting "for science" expecting to suffer on some ultra-esterified whites. Well... not at all. Certainly, these are not rums for every palate, but overall it remained surprisingly coherent and pleasant to taste from start to finish. A true demonstration of Hampden's know-how.

The nose is characterized by esters, glue, a distinct ballpoint pen ink note, and raspberries floating on top. A clinical, medicinal note reminiscent of wound benzine is clearly perceptible. On the tongue, you taste light ester notes and clearly raspberry. Over time, some cotton candy appears. The mouthfeel is oily. In a blind tasting, it could be perceived as an ambitious raspberry brandy.

Tried at the Hampden Masterclass with Daniele Biondi during Whisky Live. Great experience to deconstruct Hampden, although the individual unaged spirits weren’t that great overall. 1. OWH 6.5 Fragile & light, at the same time rough & wild. Not much flavor going on, needs the time in the wood to develop character.

Interesting to discover this low esters profile in unaged rum. Lots of tropical fruits on the nose, an impression of nice sweetness. On the palate rather light, fruity, slightly herbal. A slight bitterness at the end of the palate, then a fairly short finish.

It’s unusual of course. Unaged but enjoyable, salt, brine and vegetal notes on the nose. The mouth is easy going, fruit schnapps, minerals and tropical fruit. Finish is short salty with tropical fruit. Not my favourite marquee but interesting

Vanilla and a lighter note of nail lacquer. Pours water clear with the slightest tinge of gold. White pepper on the finish. This is the driest, with least esters. So we’ll see where we go from here. First shot on the 8-rum set.
