People who already love Haitian clairin — that briny, grassy, unaged cane-juice world — are the ones who'll get this. It's fresh sugarcane and hay with olive, a little brine and lemon, plus a wild herbal streak. Milder on the olive than Sajous, several tasters note, with fresh cane and anise stepping forward. Cask strength but not aggressive. A few catch a bitter overripe-apple note late.

Overall a pleasant Clairin that works very well neat that I tasted at the Sweden Rumfest 2023. It’s like all Clairins from Haiti and in this case from Sonson Pierre Gilles distillery in Cabaret. It’s produced from the local sugar cane variety, Madame Meuze, that after the cane is pressed is reduced to syrup that after fermentation is distilled in their pot still by Stephan Kalil Saoud.

A rum tasted in a bar in Genoa. Fruity on the nose, with very ripe pineapple, apple alcohol, sour apple and a distinct herbaceous edge. The palate is relatively smooth, still with sour apple and herbaceous notes. The length is there, but the finish develops false bitter tastes of rotten apple and drugs. A pity.

#6042 06.12.2025 Time to continue with all my white samples I got this time while listening to some Goa Trance. Nose Fresh, light smoke, light polish, apple, light berries, banana, light floral, light olive, herbs. Palate Fresh, medium intense, oily, citrus, naturally sweet, light pear, light olive, light salt, light polish, light mineral. Finish Medium long, oily, spice, light mineral, light orange, banana. Empty glass cirtrus, olive, light polih, light sour, light melon.

Another great success! Tasted with Club Lille rum. Olive and brine are present, of course, but not overpowering, giving way to fresh cane, aniseed and perhaps a little ginger. Not an endless finish, but a nice one.

On the nose, I get some fruits and herbal notes, and sugarcane juice in the background. The mouth is already more interesting, it's fresh, fruity, there's some hay. some olive as well, less olive brine than in Sajous, here it's more olive itself. The final is medium short. It finishes in hay. I'm actually positively surprised. I'm coming back to this rum while I'm rating all Clairins, and while I used to think this one was one of the weakest of the 5 unaged, I'm actually putting this one above the Sajous, on par with the Casimir, but my favorite is still the Vaval.

Tasted at the UK RumFest, and not a fully in depth tasting - overall impressions were that it’s a smooth rum and similar but maybe less pronounced briny/olive flavours than the Sajous. The woman on the Velier & LMDW stand was great, really knowledgeable and clearly enthusiastic about their rums.

I loved the 2018 Sonson, a really different nose, much less gourmand than the 2018, with more alcohol and ester than the 2018, it reminded me of Japanese ryoma rum. on the palate it's very iodized, there's some hay, it's astringent, with a hint of ginger, wild, and suave. Overall, I like it a lot less than the 2018, mainly because of the nose, which is a lot even on the palate! But in the end, there's not much difference with the 2018 on the palate, which just goes to show how important the nose is!
