Wood-and-tannin hunters are the crowd here. This 21-year John Dore pot-still St. Lucia opens with a fruit-heavy nose — sour cherry, cassis, red fruits, menthol — then flips dry and dark on the palate: oak, leather, salty licorice, bitter orange. Several tasters call it "dirty" and charred, one likening it to old Armagnac. The nose and palate don't quite match, which some love and some find jarring.

16.04.2025 Retasting with Fabian in Blåvand. ----------------------- #4155 This is a really nice and heavy Chairman's Reserve. The John Doore still has some tricks up its sleeve and they're really released here. Lightly fruity with roasted wood without it being too dominant. Spicy dry palate nd very good ABV integration. Draws really nice slow moving curtains in the glass and the empty glass is really nice and I can pick up some coffee and leather as well as very light iodine.

After pouring into the glass, the rum immediately takes possession of the surrounding air with thick, heavy swaths. Closer to the glass I find sour cherry, red berries and cassis. The fruit compote is accompanied by very pleasant and balanced roasted and barrel notes. Pleases me excellently. I have compared on the fly with some other St Lucia but this one is a blast on the nose! On the palate, the tannins clearly have the upper hand: lots of spice, oak, leather, salty licorice. The fruit is only subtly in the background and from the bitter category. The rum reminds me of old Armagnac on the palate. The ever-long aftertaste is clearly dominated by barrel and spice. I would have liked the fruits of the nose to reappear but so there is a certain break between nose and palate. The bitter notes, however, are not in the unpleasant range for my sensation. Regardless, an excellent, intense, powerful rum.

RdL vs Kirsch: Great cinema, what arrives here on the nose of RdL: red fruits, chutney, dried fruit, menthol notes, tobacco, caramel. And everything plays together wonderfully homogeneously. One notices the long aging there. The kirsch in the other glass has a completely different profile, which was not so clear to me without the direct comparison: the kirsch comes much more through spices such as allspice, nutmeg, anise (peppernut), also a little towards root vegetables or fennel. On the palate, the RdL comes more over dirty notes and charred barrel. The kirsch is a bit more 'mellow', more on spice. Overall, the RdL clearly came out ahead, on par with the Nectar 15th. The only downer: the blatantly exorbitant price.

On the nose still some dark red fruits, but these are hardly detectable on the palate. Lots of tannins, woodiness, licorice, leather, a high mature (=D) aroma density. The finish is further bitter, woody, and salty. Could fit the Fisherman's slogan: If it's too strong, you're too weak.

On aeration, it becomes slightly pungent, the molasses is flowery, grassy, herbaceous, earthy with tobacco, leather joins, pastry. 8,4:On the palate, the attack is intense dry, slightly tannic, with roasted/charred wood notes like cocoa, caramel, mocha, nuts, burnt, smoky, dirty, spicy with allspice, salty, medicinal with menthol, fruity with raisins(Armagnac hints), bitter orange, orange peel and cherries, as the molasses is flowery, dark with licorice. 8,7:The finish is long, dry&tannic, with roasted oak notes, charred, burnt, smoky, dirty, leather, caramel, mocha, spicy with allspice, fruity with dried, citrus fruits, cherry, as the molasses is grassy, dark with licorice, black tea, medicinal with rubber, phenol and menthol. Another Chairman's Rum with dominant smoky aromas. The complex nose still has a remarkable fruitiness that I really like. But on the palate, it's too one-sidedly dark and bitter for my taste. Dry spicy and still very smoky, vegetal and earthy. Conclusion: Nose 9/10, but mouthfeel and finish more like 8/10.

And the 4th Chairman's in the group, it competes with the Rum&Co. For me they are both on a par, the RDL is slightly more intense, but of the same character (nose: fruity, wood; palate: wood, spice, tannins, finish, wood, spice, fruit), the Rum&Co has a slightly better alcohol integration, for me they are equal, the Chairman's front runner is still the Nobilis in my opinion!

What a board! For me, a familiar profile from Saint Lucia with additional fruity notes. I can smell and taste cherries and oranges. But the orange is rather dry and bitter. Otherwise, the rum is also quite dry and woody, but also somehow sweet like caramel. For me, it's the best Saint Lucia so far. However, around 260 euros for the bottle is hefty.

Tasted during a small birthday round in a 5-rum Chairman’s Flight. For me, a bit too woody. A nice Chairman’s, but also a bit demanding. I'll spare my words about the price asked for it. Not worth the money for me; I'd go for another Chairman’s bottling.

Exciting parallel tasting with the 14yo WDC cask from another still. The DNA is very similar, the 21yo has - of course - significantly more woodspice, the WDC is fresher. However, both casks have this sour cherry note that I couldn't quite grasp at first. The quality of both is top notch!

Frankonian Tasting Gang - 21.03.2025 - Nuremberg: Five Chairman's Reserve in small cross tssting. The Horizon has a very dominant, mega-fruity nose. It's there immediately after pouring, while the others still need some time to develop. After a while, RdL and RA catch up. Similar picture on the palate, the three would be my favorites, while the LMDW is too woody for me and the Cask&Bottle has too much finish.

Really wicked st. Lucia! Fresh, bitter, spicy, fruity and heavy and oily. Cassis, menthol, thyme, salt licorice, strong coffee, bitter cocoa and bitter orange jam, but also almost burnt wood.... Really thick and dirty.... Extremely long finish... Fat!

Super crazy Chairman's with a cool note of sour cherry, Armagnac and leather on the palate. I like it very much. In the Chairman's price comparison maybe a bit expensive but very very good. I would love to have a bottle.

Wonderfully creamy and intense, the wood dominates overall. For my taste, the bottlings with Vendome influence are usually superior to the pure John Dore 1 bottlings, so no top rating here. Considering the steep price, there are better buying opportunities in my opinion...

Typical aroma that Master's rums have. Many technical tones mixed with spices, fruit and barrel wood. Taste-wise it's great. The barrel from bourbon is very noticeable, fruit, menthol and tannins. The finish is a long ride on a menthol-licorice-fruit wave.

It's so old you can't tell it's Chairman's! It's old and musty, musty like old Guyana. All tannins and old wardrobe. Fantastic piece!

Wer das typisch kräftige, medizinisch-würzige Pot-Still-Profil und schweres Eichenholz liebt, kommt hier voll auf seine Kosten. Der Rum balanciert perfekt auf der Rasierklinge zwischen spritziger Fruchtigkeit und einer massiven Holzwürze. Ein Rum mit Ecken und Kanten, der durch seine leichte Bitterkeit für mich ein unvergessliches und intensives Geschmackserlebnis bietet. Die Nase startet intensiv und komplex mit einer wunderbaren Balance aus Frucht und Holz. Reife rote Früchte, saure Kirschen und Cassis dominieren den ersten Eindruck. Dahinter zeigt sich eine feine Kräuternote, gepaart mit deutlich geröstetem Eichenholz und dem klassischen, schweren Profil der Melasse-Fermentation. Sehr facettenreich und tief. Am Gaumen zeigt dieser Rum sein volles Potenzial und ist definitiv nichts für Einsteiger. Extrem trocken, charakterstark und ungesüßt. Die Tannine aus der langen Fasslagerung haben hier klar die Oberhand. Massive Würze, viel Eichenholz, Leder und eine sehr dominante Note von salziger Lakritze. Im Hintergrund blitzt etwas Bitterorange auf. Der Abgang ist gefühlt endlos. Schwer gezeichnet von den Holztönen dominieren hier Röstaromen, verkohltes Holz, Zimt, Nelken und erneut viel würzige Lakritze. Ein extrem wuchtiges und langanhaltendes Finish, das langsam im Glas ausklingt. Für mich ein Meisterwerk aus Saint Lucia.
