Bristol Caroni Reserve Rum of Trinidad HTR 1998
The surprise here is how easy it goes down for a Caroni. Tar, tyres and petrol are all present — that dirty engine-room signature this distillery is known for — but they arrive rounded rather than aggressive, with a fresh menthol lift and fruit landing late. At 51.3% the alcohol sits well integrated. Several tasters call it a good place to start with Caroni.

Tasting at the Village'25 Nuremberg. Nice to be able to try another rare but unfortunately overpriced Caroni from Bristol. Of course, it has the expected markers, but unfortunately not a Caroni highlight. Overall, it seems a little thin at the back.

... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing rum at the height of its fame, which was added in a ratio of 1:10 to naval blends. It was too strong and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. In 2000 the distillery ended production and was closed. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who liked the rum precisely for its special taste. And interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of rums "you need to try before you die." I recommend it, Caroni is really a unique rum.

A rum tasted at Rum Depot in Berlin. The bottle is almost empty. Full Caroni nose, tires, petrol and tar with a surprising but very pleasant freshness. The palate has a clean attack, with notes of machine shop first, then comes the freshness (menthol?) sensed on the nose, fruit last. The finish is a little pale in comparison, with fruit and a woodiness that was barely present before. The empty glass shows a lovely balance between fruit and machine shop. A very fine Caroni, too bad its finish is a little weak.

Definitely the highlight of the online Bristol tasting. A not too smooth 98er, complex, slightly dirty notes, alcohol well integrated.
Review by DomM
Very nice on the nose with a nice long lingering aftertaste. On the palate the reduction becomes noticeable in an A/B comparison versus FP Caronis from 98. All in all quite enjoyable - somewhat an easy sipper (when it comes to Caronis) which still delivers on the dirty notes and presents a round profile.
Review by Andi
It has those typical dirty Caroni flavors, but not too overbearing like some other Caronis.
Review by Mentalo
Has nice dirty Caroni notes and they also clearly predominate on the nose and palate. Alcohol is well integrated, but a few more percent would have done him good. It lacks a bit of power due to the alcohol reduction.
