Tar and heavy oil hit first, then dried fruit, dark chocolate and coffee push through, with a long dry, bitter finish that hangs on for minutes. This is old wooden-pot-still Demerara: leather, tobacco, burnt sugar, a "dirty" note more than a few members single out as the best part. At 51.8% the alcohol sits well integrated. Complex and a touch polarizing.

A warm, full nose. Very mature, smooth and balanced. Complex and spicy. Wood, burnt sugar and spices in the mouth. Not particularly powerful (but far from watered down). Nice finish. A nice, archetypal Demerara, quaffable and enjoyable. For higher consecrations but then lacks the special.

Again a Versailles, which is not immediately recognizable given the color. Lots of tart spiciness, roasted notes and slight bitterness from the wood as well as subtle tea aromas. With a bit more fruitiness, the complexity could have increased even more, but it remains a very nice Enmore/Versailles rum with a lot of Demerara DNA. Successful.

An atypical Enmore / Versailles that stands out from the old bottlings. The nose is deep and very elegant but develops a very particular aromatic profile. You find notes of caramel and burnt sugar, red and dried fruits (raisin, prune), dark chocolate, coffee and a hint of aromatic herbs. Combined with spices (licorice, vanilla), umami, tobacco and smoke, the blend gives an atypical aromatic substance, hard to describe and more pronounced than on other Enmores. Intriguing. The palate continues the profile with the same inexplicable aroma, sometimes fresh, sometimes smoky, a bit umami, woven on warm spices (licorice, vanilla, chili), wood and warm molasses. You find this fruity, dry and red side, a bit ripe and elegant on the palate, as well as coffee and dark chocolate. A dry but oily rum develops on the palate, rather balanced and where the alcohol is very well integrated. The finish is long, dry and bitter. The smoky side stands out a lot with tobacco, wood, spices, leather and umami. Notes of tea emerge while the fruits and cooked molasses round off the edges of a rather complex and delicate rum, which reserves its share of surprises. An original and divisive Enmore that will surely spark debate.

This is a great Guyanese rum from S.B.S. With a lot of nose and flawours. A well balanced and complex 28 year rum that you should try if you're a rum nerd.

... Enmore - drive distillery, now just a functional distillation device. Probably the only wooden distillation device in the world that enjoys great popularity. Enmore rums have flavors of ash, leather, heavy wood, which especially excite lovers of smoky whiskies. And if the producer adds a bit of molasses to the rum in the traditional Guyanese way, you have a unique, very strong and heavy rum in the bottle. One of my favorites.

Nose: Dark and dried fruits, leather and woody notes. Overall very harmonious. Palate: heavy and oily, initially with a tar note, before the dried fruits, cocoa and coffee aromas make their way. The dark fruits come later. Finish: dirty note lingers, tobacco, coffee and bitter notes as well as wood. Conclusion: The mildest rum of the five Enmore in comparison. Especially the dirty note with the tar is pleasing and stands out.

The darkest rum in our tasting series, which is also typical for the 1988 Enmores, probably coming from the Versailles Single Wooden Pot Still and probably colored. On the nose I find freshly caramelized sugar, already slightly burnt, lots of wood, anise, herbs, dark dried fruit, pepper and cloves – a complex nose that I quite like. The alcohol with its 51.8% fills the mouth pleasantly. Very briefly there is a sweetness in the form of caramel, but it immediately shifts into a barely pleasant bitterness. Almost all aromas from the nose are also found on the palate, plus tobacco and some smoke. The finish is long and leaves a bitter taste on the tongue for several minutes. Compared to the TRC Guyana 88 and the SS Guyana 88, you clearly notice the few more vol. % alcohol – neither in a positive nor negative way. For me, the TRC has a slight edge because despite the lower % it has more body. Nevertheless, again a very good rum from S.B.S. 87 points.
