Here's the surprise: a port finish on a Mauritius molasses rum that actually works. It layers stewed black fruit, cassis and blackberry over the classic Grays mint and cocoa, with an oily, syrupy body. Several tasters expected it to go too sweet or muddy but found it turned drier and more complex instead. A couple still wish more of the raw distillery shone through.

Interesting and complex bottling. The port finish does not overshadow the basic DNA of Grays. Admittedly, quite intense and dominant, but fits well. Good rum, still I prefer bottlings without finish.

Not bad. Nose is pleasant, soft even, sweet. You smell the medeira influence, but the taste is very different! Strong sherry notes, that quickly give way to some obvious spicyness, bitterness, pepper and lighter wood. Burnt sugar. I enjoy oak influences, but perhaps this is just a tad over what I would prefer. ABV is surprisingly present given that it is “only” 52,4 %, though it’s not overpowering.

Once again a Grays. With the finish, which I was once again worried about in advance, it didn't turn out that way after all. I think it fits here and enhances the base rather than ruining it. A solid bottling for me.

Very unexpected flavor profile - the port finish works excellently here and brings out a wonderfully complex spectrum of aromas. Wood, tobacco, menthol paired with dense fruit sweetness, which offers both the heavy depth of the port wine and fresh nuances. Really delicious, Grays is slowly becoming an insider tip for me.

A completely different character to the New Grove Savoir Faire (RX13444) from the same distillation year 2010 and with the same maturation period of 12 years, for which the port-cask finish is certainly responsible, it has done a great job. But this rum from Grays is not bad either, the finish does not make the rum sweeter or mustier as expected, but aromatically more varied and drier. The fruit profile shifts from redcurrant to blackcurrant compared to the unfinished version. A good example of how a port-cask finish can also work with a molasses rum (almost always with sugar cane juice rums anyway) and, in my opinion, is always preferable to a sherry finish. Only the alcohol could be a little better integrated here.

#4821 26.08.2024 A nice evening with both old and new faces in Odense. Nose Round, light wood, faint smoke, berries, faint caramel, light mint, cherry, spice. Palate Round, wood, light tannins, fruits, cherry, raisin, light chocolate, medium spicy, mint, naturally sweet, spice. Finish Medium long, wood, light tannins, berries, light chocolate, faint caramel, spice, mint.

Gray's tasting rx9122 vs. Rx14941 vs. Rx7608 This one is clearly better than the previously tasted rx9122 ... the port finish fits nicely into the profile. It somehow fits together. Perhaps the berry finish is too dominant for me, but that's personal preference.

Nose and palate dominated by port wine... and black currants. At first sniff I thought it was leftover red wine from the evening that stood open all night 🤣🤣... no, unfortunately I don't like it that much. Too bad.

The port maturation fits perfectly here, without completely diluting (or oversweetening 🤣) the distillery's character. I'm always cautious with port and Madeira, but this time we had 3 in the lineup in Odense (one each of port and Madeira full maturation + Madeira finish) and all 3 worked.

Really beautiful Mauritius single cask! Port wine is absolutely perfect here and complements the typical Grays distillery notes of mint, grapefruit peel and cocoa perfectly with cassis, tannins and blackberry, but also some plum and menthol. I think the price is a little too steep compared to other similarly good single casks from the Grays distillery, but this is still an absolutely successful drop!

This is not a bad bottling, but the port finish is too dominant for me. The nice peach note gets lost. Instead very berry-like and for me also a bit too sweet. There is also a mint note.

The port finish can be smelled and also tasted very well. On the palate, the finish integrates well with the typical Grays profile of mint and orange. Fits well together!

Relatively dense and heavy on the nose. At first I had an impression of slight sulfur, but then it is rather thick grape must or raisins. On the palate you can definitely notice the Port finish quite well, but still very harmonious. The heavier fruit aromas from the port cask complement the currant and a slight Tic Tac wintergreen moment well here. The finish is medium length. For me a successful bottling.

Very nice dense and complex Port finish. Fruity towards dark berries, a bit chocolatey and woody. Soft when drinking and in the finish a lot of sweetness, mint and cocoa come out. A tasty drop. Thanks to Gunnar for the sample. Cheers🥃

The nose opens syrupy and port-driven, resulting in an amalgamation of stewed black fruits, such as black cherries, blackberries and cassis, combined with fruity-sweet sirop de Liège. I can smell roasted hazelnuts and malt, but when left undisturbed gardening peat takes its place. On the tongue a thick and oily feeling. Very sweet, with more syrup. Interestingly the black cherries are gone. Instead it presents a rather dried, musty profile in addition to the blackberries and cassis. The port is very present, and so are the accompanying tannins. The black fruits, port and soil notes remain throughout the entire experience. It’s sweet. Borderline too sweet. However at the very end, it does get a little cool, with fresh mint, which takes the edge off. I’m not the biggest fan of port and thus had low expectations, instead I got positively surprised. I would have loved it even more if a little more of the original Grays profile shone through. I picked the bottle up at €75 which was an absolute bargain in hindsight.

I've had this bottle for a while now and at first I wasn't a big fan, but I've come to appreciate it. You get the port notes on the nose and the taste. There is also quite a lot of sweetness in the form of chocolate and butterscotch.
