Velier Caroni 100% Trinidad Rum 15 HTR 1998
Sip this neat and slowly — it opens quiet, almost shy, then rolls into tar, burnt sugar, leather and roasted nuts with a bit of dried fruit and orange peel. At 52% the heat stays in check. Several tasters call it a lighter, rounder Caroni — one even nicknamed it their "daily sipper" — but plenty note it lacks the depth of the 12 or 17.

How does Velier Caroni 100% Trinidad Rum 15 HTR 1998 taste?
Summarized by AI from community reviews.
Softer, tar-and-toffee entry-level Caroni Well-liked as a gentle, rounded entry into Caroni — tar, toffee and leather all there. Many find it flatter and less complex than its siblings, and reduced ABV thins the mid-palate.

Super nice and harmonious nose. Compared to the 12-year-old, there's clearly more caramel and, alongside the spicy woodiness, it almost leans towards a cinnamon direction. There's also a bit of meaty character. On the palate, again lots of spice, leather, and wood, as well as dried fruits and vanilla. Brown caramel and roasted nuts plus cinnamon come through. The finish is long and, like the nose and palate, very complex. Wood, caramel, and fruity notes blend harmoniously with leather and earthy accents. I'm amazed at the big difference three years of aging makes. After just under an hour, I can still detect some cherry on the nose. Thanks to @DanielS for the sample.

Compared to the 12 year old this one is fruitier and it has more complexity and smoothness to it. The nose is typical Caroni and it's rounded and intense with a bit of industrial flavour to it. The palate is very complex and fruity with smoky oak to it. The finish is very long and fruity with smoked oak to it. Price to quality is good.

Epic Velier Caroni Tasting 2023: The HTR profile comes through, overall rather dry, little sweetness. Thanks to the reduction, it's quite accessible without offering huge complexity. Apart from that, a solid Caroni from tropical aging with a classic profile.
Review by Tschusikowsky
Easy sipping Caroni. Just an awesome profile. Relatively round but very pleasing. More fruity than the 12-year-old, with more focus on chocolate. I like this one better than many bottlings currently on the market.
Review by DomM
Intense on the nose with some smoke and dirt/chemical notes taking center stage here. Nice dirtyness, not too much complexity and fruits for me only in the background. Reduction doesn’t hurt too much here. More balanced on the palate with more vanilla and chocolate alongside some dirt. Here the reduction in ABV is quite noticeable regulating in a thin(ish) mouthfeel. Not enough power and complexity to make it to the top of the 98 vintage.
Review by crazyforgoodbooze
Very awesome Caroni. Very intense, balanced and complex. The 12 and 21-year-olds are overall a bit better though. Still it has everything you expect: smoke, fruit, burnt rubber, dirt and a fine minerality.

8,4:On the nose, the first impression we get is with roasted wood and its notes like caramel, burnt sugar, underneath there are dried fruits, tar and an orange peel. After airing the rum, yellow fruits arise and balance the first dull impression, the wood is charred with chocolate, nuts and caramel, spicy with vanilla and molasses waxy. Some meat notes also appear. 8,5:On the palate, the attack is fruity and woody with an orange, tropical fruits and spicy, roasted wood with caramel, perhaps toffee, nuts, vanilla, becomes dry quickly. Then the industrial notes come out quite intensely with bitter notes like tar, rubber, there is some menthol. The molasses is vegetal with mint, dark with licorice, balances the palate nicely and luckily tasty dried apricots, currants, prunes and peaches that improve rather rough, dull start. 8,5:The finish is long, tastier than before, with notes from the palate lingering on and with some new ones, which improve our tasting experience like red fruits with a raspberry and some smoky charred wood with creamy notes. Edit:23.3.25-resting, oxidation helps, 0,1 higher.
Review by Thunderbird
A fairly good Caroni with not quite expressive classic Caroni aromas. That makes it a good entry into the Caroni world, although to me it is a bit too tame. But it is very balanced and easy to drink.
Review by TheRhumhoe
A relatively light Caroni in its constitution. The nose initially lets the gourmandise escape with caramel candy, toffee and burnt sugar. Then a drier, dirtier tone takes over, with rubber, tar, bicycle tire, that singular smoky side, leather, spices, dried fruits. It's an attractive and soft profile, but lacks a bit of length on the nose. The attack on the palate returns to this particular caramel toffee, giving a very marked impression of sweetness. Behind that, spicy and vanilla wood, roasted hazelnuts and dried fruits make their place and confirm the lightness of the profile. Only after a few moments in the mouth does the petrol and smoky side slowly emerge from the palate. The alcohol is not perceptible in this mass of gourmandise. The finish is quite long, sweet and caramelized on the toffee but a bit drier and more bitter with the leather and dirtiness of the Trinidadian profile. The spices (vanilla and licorice notably) are supported by scattered fruits in this velvet cloak. Luckily the label reminds us what we are dealing with, because this Caroni proves very gourmand and easy to drink. It is not as complex and intense as most of its peers, but it has the merit of offering a more sober and soft facet than usual.

Light Caroni with the typical notes. Great aroma but not as complex as many other Caronis. Certainly a good entry point to dive into the world of Caronis. The price is no longer justified here.
Review by cigares
A rum tasted in a restaurant, the bottle is half empty. A nose of fruit, little mechanical workshop and like an acidity. The mouth reveals something carbonic, bitter orange and a slight rubber. The finish is a bit short for a Caroni. The empty glass highlights the woodiness, smokiness and notes of mechanical workshop. The least interesting of the 12-15-17-21-100th series, but still a beautiful Caroni with tropical aging.

Not boozy. Very good carbonation with tar and soft as silk

Review by Timo Groeger
We've definitely got a tasty Caroni here. Tar is the standout feature in both the nose and palate. Otherwise, it's still quite leathery, wood is noticeable, but also roasted notes, smoke, and spices like vanilla.
Review by N’ours
Not being a fan of Caroni, I find it quite pleasant and accessible. Not too tarry with nice fruity and woody notes, even if the typical markers of this distillery are not far away.
Review by Mirco
Typical Caroni rum. However, not very special at a low drinking strength. The aroma is there, but not particularly complex. From the standard series, in my opinion, the weakest of the bottlings. Still, a rum that's fun to drink.
Review by Christoph
The nose is very intense but also very balanced. Wood notes harmonize with charred grilled meat (you wouldn't want to eat it but it smells delicious). On the palate, super tasty oak residues that were overlooked during road tar application and are now part of the road.
Review by Mike H.
Falls a little short of my expectations. I find this Caroni to be a little flat. Most of the usual markers are there but they aren’t pronounced enough for my taste.

Tasted at Whisky Live. A beautiful accessible and easy-drinking Caroni baseline!

Lot’s of leather and I like it. 260306: Three years since last time and I still like it a lot.
Review by alex
A magnificent rum where you can really feel the classic Caroni markers. Even though I preferred the 12-year, this one is more characteristic. I really love this series, but this one might be the least good of the four.
Review by Tim
Nose typical of Caroni with dominant smoke/roasty and tar. Also leather, wood and weak fruits. However, I find the nose rather reserved. On the palate already more intense, additionally the finish is long. Overall probably an average Caroni with high smoke content. Not really what I appreciate in a rum, but I acknowledge that this is a coherent package.
Review by Serge
Falls a bit behind the other tropical aged Caronis I've tried so far. Still very good but a few points lower. The typical markers are there, but just a bit less awesome and less harmonious.
Review by kondgab
Typical Caroni from the standard Velier set. More complex than its younger brother(12yrs). On the nose tar, rubber, you feel yourself in a mechanic shop. In the palate fruits emerge too. The finish is also long.

Review by Florent Apl
To think that this was supposed to be part of a core range, it's quite complexe and very pleasant. There is the signature tar, but rather dim, I guess they included some lighter rum in the blend. It's also quite fruity, very cool product.
Review by Martin Spooner
The nose nicely peaty and woody. Not too intense at all. On the palate then quite unique rubber notes. Maybe really toffee. However, already nicely tasty with a somewhat short finish. Not bad.
Review by Oliver
Very nice entry-level Caroni at a wonderful drinking strength. Roasty and more caramel than the 12-year-old. However, it falls noticeably short compared to the outstanding 1996 vintage.
Review by Werner10
I had this sample for quite some time now, it was a gift from a friend at work. This ond is really nice. Just enough sweetness, oaky and roasted flavors. Finish is long with a smoky profile. Very nice 👌
Review by lars
Today I tasted the leftovers again. I stick to my rather moderate rating. It has the expected caramel note, but compared to my expectation I find it quite one-dimensional and flat. Hardly any fruit, lots of wood. Not a bad rum, but for the money there are better ones.
Review by HenryL
Surprisingly restrained on the nose. Very round, slightly sweetish. A bit of fresh leather. On the palate then clearly more intense, nicely fruity, slightly tarry. The alcohol not optimally integrated but still not unpleasant. A bit rusty. Tasty but not super impressive.
Review by Filip Šikula
Compared to Velier Caroni 12, it's noticeably less technical. The nose has similar notes as the 12, just much softer and rounder. On the palate, the technicality fades very far into the background, instead mint and fruit appear. Finish medium-length, pleasant.
Review by Gil Firth
Tasting at a bar. As of this point in time. I have no experience with these Caroni releases. From the few I have sniffed, I must say the rum is indeed excellent, but there are many releases I find not that captivating. I asked in our rum group which from this series is the best and many answered the 15. So yes, there is something heavy here. Dirty. Woody. Without many fruits and of course the tar and dirt. For me, it is less good than other Caronis I have tasted. Not bad or anything. Just less good.
Review by Shridhar Acharya
What an enjoyable pour of rum. Going in I thought it may not be worth the hype, but it’s an intense flavorful rum that I savored happily
Review by Fuwi
Dilution to drinking strength took the punch out of the Caroni and it becomes a pleasant entry-level Caroni, relatively flat and weak. The typical aromas are present but the expected complexity is lost. Still a tasty rum, even if you would have expected more from the name.
Review by Rum Runner Labs - Will
A really distinct ethyl note followed by deep burnt sugar and sawdust. On subsequent sniffs the burnt sugar gets stronger, almost giving a Demerara adjacent impression. Heavy, but surprisingly gentle on the front of the palate with tons of smokiness, wordiness, burnt sugar, and a touch of currant. The proof really hits at the back of the palate aerating that classic Caroni smokey-rubber. The finish is long, but strikes a balance between the rubber and burnt sugar. Overall incredible—I’m going to have to find some more Caroni :)

Mega lecker!

... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing at its peak a rum that was added in a ratio of 1:10 to the naval blend. It was too strong and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. The distillery ended production and was closed in 2000. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who liked the rum precisely for its special taste. And interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of rums "you need to try before you die." I recommend it, Caroni is really a unique rum.

I was allways wondering, how strawberry would smell and taste in rum. And I think I found one :) So yeah, nice to discover, but overall not that fun.

Rate 8.0 Tasted it a few times back in 2015 or 2016. Was not a big fan of Caroni back then. A lot has changed 😉 31-07-2025 - Rate 8.7 A lot has happened during the last 8 years. Are more found of Caroni. Non the less, it tasted pretty good now. Notes of leather, wood, glue, tar and smoke. Palate is round and nice with mostly wood and tar with a hint of roasted nuts and dried fruit. Medium finish whit hints of tar, leather and wood.
