Tasted at the Catawiki stand at the Village in Nuremberg. For the price at the stand, something you can try, but unfortunately really only a sniff of the potential of the 1996 vintage. A lot of what you would expect from a rum, but - given the dilution - of course not what you would expect from a Caroni. But still a good rum.

A sample taken at the German Rum Festival 2024. A beautiful nose, ample with tropical fruits, light wood and gourmand pastry notes. The mechanical workshop is in the background. The mouth is watery, diluted with almost no flavors. I struggle to spot the Caroni markers. The finish is short with slight pastry notes. Not at all a bad rum, rather easy to drink. But in no way up to what one can expect from a Caroni 1996.

This is a cheap Caroni and a brilliant example that you get what you pay for. All the typical Caroni notes of rubber and tar are missing. This is not a bad rum, but in my mind not a Caroni. The nose is thin with light wood, vanilla and some nuts. The is a light roasted note with dried fruit and a faint earthy note. The palate is diluted/thin withe lightly roasted wood, dried fruit, vanilla and a hint of cocoa. Tha finish is medium with light roasted wood, vanilla and raisins. Price to quality is pretty good but it's not a Caroni :-)

Unfortunately very unremarkable. Still Caroni on the nose, then very pleasant on the palate, unfortunately watery and nothing at the back. Tastes like cola rum.

By far the weakest among the Caronis tasted. Very light and way too watery. Missing the power and heaviness one is used to from many other Caronis. However, certainly okay as an entry-level.

Definitely the best Mezan I've had in my glass so far. Despite only 40%, it is still complex and rich in aromas. Much fruitier in the mouth than on the nose, but more spicy-fruity and a little woody than sweet.

... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing rum at the height of its fame, which was added in a ratio of 1:10 to naval blends. It was too strong and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. In 2000 the distillery ended production and was closed. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who liked the rum precisely for its special taste. And interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of rums "you need to try before you die." I recommend it, Caroni is really a unique rum.

A beautiful nose for this rum to start with, and then the rest is clearly less attractive. You can definitely feel the famous Caroni nose, but on the palate, it’s not great. The palate is simple and not complex.
