Tasters land close to agreement here: a proper Caroni, just leaning a touch more fruity than tarry. The nose is all "garage" — motor oil, diesel, leather, tobacco — before red fruit, mango, orange and vanilla push through. On the palate it's smoky, oily and oaky with caramel and citrus. A few wish it hit harder on tar; one found it slightly less complex than other 1997s.

This is yet another release of the 1997 Caroni and it has just gotten better with even more aging. A nice Trinidad and Tobago blend that shines beside the other 1997 releases. You may want to add a drop or two of water if you think it bites too much or you just leave it to rest for 15-30 minutes. A wonderful nose transferring into a full bodied complex rum with a long warm finish.

For at least 15 minutes after pouring, this Caroni mainly smells of leather, tobacco, and the characteristic "workshop notes" before it grants access to fruits and the gentler, toasted oak aromas. On the palate follows a delicious interplay of spices, tropical fruits, and profound oak, without neglecting the leathery side that the smell announced. A great rum!

My dry January lasted four and a half days but I just couldn’t refuse to sample this Caroni 😂 Lovely dirty nose, more fruity taste wise. A very good Caroni!

On the nose solvents and cherry, some vanilla. In taste more woody and citrusy than the Replica, only other Caroni I had. Somehow less interesting than the other one, less complex, although I do enjoy a more bitter profile.

👃 tout ce que j'aime dans un Caroni 97. Dès l'ouverture, du goudron, huile de moteur, graisse de garage, diesel, solvants industriels. Une jolie fraîcheur s'installe sur des huiles essentielles de menthe et des litchis. Un bel empyreumatique, vif, fumé et frais. A cela s'ajoute une belle crème brûlée, des oranges confites au chocolat au lait et une belle vanille égrainée. Quelques fruits tropicaux (pomme cannelle, goyave, papaye). Puis avec l'aération, une note typique de salaisons de viande, charcuterie italienne. 😋 Vive, huileuse, intense. Accroche goudronnée, fumée de bois, chêne brûlé, sensation en bouche compacte, huileuse (huile essentielle), menthe, thé vert. Caramel liquide dans la casserole, rouleau de réglisse salée, salaisons de viande. Les fruits sont un peu plus timides qu'au nez, toujours del orange confite amère cette fois-ci et des fruits tropicaux qui compotent dans la marmite pour faire de la confiture sans sucre rajouté (mangue, goyave, papaye). ⛳ Chaude, intense, fumée, épicée, boisé. Café juste servi, chocolat noir, vanille fraîche. Des douelles de fût brûlées avec du sucre caramélisé. Amertume lointaine d'agrumes séchés, thé, un peu de feuille de tabac. 💡 Toujours compliqué de ne pas mettre une bonne note à ce genre de profil boisé, empyreumatique et complexe. 87+ N.B. verre vide le lendemain qui dégage une très belle odeur de cacahuète grillée, de chouchou caramélisé et d'épices de marinade. +1pt

Always a nice experience to discover a Caroni. This one is at first quite light on the nose, rather sweet. Then we feel that it rises in power with smoked notes. In the mouth, it is first sweet and caramelized then it becomes heavier and thicker. Solvents, tar, burnt arrive to mark the Caroni territory.Sympathetic tasting :)

A superb nose of wood, spices and citrus. Mango and tropical fruit are also present, along with orange and butterscotch. Very, very good on the palate! Vanilla, caramel and coconut mingle with citrus and wood. A superb bottle with a fairly low ABV, but it's hyper-concentrated! An elegant caroni without being exceptionally dirty.

Cross tasting 1997 Caronis from continental storage: Very close to the sister releases from Bristol, the HTR DNA is clearly recognizable in all. My favorite is the youngest release in the series thanks to its expressive 'youthfulness', but overall we are on a high level.

On sait direct où l’on est ! Le nez tabac cuir garage sale !! Bref très Caroni ce nez ! Du bois aussi pas mal de bois En bouche l’alcool est juste ce qu’il faut ! En bouche C’est brûlé fumé ! Un peu de caoutchouc et une petite fraîcheur légère ! Un très beau rhum bien Caroni mais je préfère un poil plus de fruit

Excellent with its dirty accents, its mechanical, motor-oil side, with wax, camphor, controlled woodiness amidst some red fruit. The only downside is a slightly short finish.
