La Confrérie du Rhum HSE Rhum Agricole Extra Vieux (La Confrérie du Rhum) 2007

Anyone who likes an aged agricole that leans wood and dark fruit over grass will feel at home here. Almost 15 years in cask pushes it toward candied orange, plum, dried fruit, vanilla and dark chocolate, with a mocha, "café au lait" edge a few tasters caught. The 47.6% sits well integrated. A couple find the tannins slightly drying and the body could be oilier.

On the nose, lots of candied fruit, citrus/blood orange marmalade, candied apricot, then sweet spices (cinnamon, white pepper, cloves). A lovely sweet cane mixed with subtle woodiness, it's concentrated. This is followed by a touch of brine on the green olive of the ham cake, salty and greedy. A touch of figs too, a toasty/woody edge. On the palate, astonishing, malted barley, on yeast, the sting of alcohol, pleasant, if a little disconcerting. It's powerful, warm, heavy, at which point you can certainly feel the effect of the "copper mist" toasting. The woodiness is present, but very well integrated with the overall flavors of the juice. Now, from the grapes to the alcohol, which evolves towards grandmother's black cherries dipped in eau de vie. Retro-olfaction: light sweet caramel, bitter dark chocolate, dark coffee, roasted hazelnuts and walnuts. Finish: warm candied date, borderline licorice, nutmeg, fine noble wood, returning to dark chocolate. A very fine rhum agricole, almost 15 years old, rustic, powerful yet subtle.

Tasting on a campside in the south of French. Big flavours in the nose. Somewhat acidic. Cherry. Port anf red wine. A bit whisky like too. Red fruits. Nectarine. Bigger than expected with this abv. Taste: very fruity. A bit artificial too. Chartreuse. Groene limonade (Dutch Reine Claude lemonade). Very different than I expected. Weird but nice. Sort of a blind tasting, because no internet here..might be a port cask or something. Challenging dram.

Great bottling with a successful mix of discreet wood, slightly acidic, fresh and present heavy fruit, spices and slight bitterness. The alcohol strength also plays along wonderfully, the integration is excellent and despite the rather low strength, the aroma always remains concise without becoming too thin. Very good.

Considering the price, I was expecting something more concentrated, but this is a West Indian brut de fût, so it could have been a hell of a lot drier. In hindsight, it's a very good tasting rum, but not worth the price it's currently fetching on the net (from 250 to 550€)...

Avg Rating 8.0/10 over 330 Rums

Le Simon is Martinique's ghostwriter. It is the island's most technologically advanced distillery, yet it sells no rum under its own name, runs no public tours, and ages nothing on site. Instead it distils two of the most beloved names in Martinique agricole, HSE and, until recently, Clement, on stills moved here from their original homes. What you taste as HSE is, in fact, Le Simon.
