My son offered me a glass of this rum from the Esperance distillery in Guadeloupe that produces the Longueteau, Karukera & Papillon brands. This Longueteau Prélude is a blend of relatively young Agricole’s aged in French oak barrels formerly contained cognac. It is a "brut de fût", so it’s bottled without any reduction of the alcoholic strength. It has been released in many batches with minor differences in ABV. This one is batch 11 and at ABV 49,8%. Overall an elegant and soft Agricole that’s giving an impression of being older than it is.

A fairly young blend from Longueteau offering pleasant fragrances of young wood, chili, hazelnut, and vanilla, but with a welcome freshness. Coconut and marmalade or compote aromas add roundness. A fairly simple but tasty profile. The attack on the palate is drier and lively. The spices become more dominant, with chili and cinnamon supporting the sweetness of coconut, caramel, and vanilla. However, the pressure of greener notes is felt, trying to pierce the palate. The influences of the raw product and the cask blend harmoniously. The alcohol is quite well integrated but fairly lively for a profile of this strength. The finish, of good length, plays on a darker note, both coffee, dark chocolate, licorice, ginger, leather, tobacco, and spiciness. The coconut gives some creaminess. A well-executed blend that drinks nicely.

A rum with a discreet nose that doesn't reveal its strong spicy character on the palate. A good rum but doesn't match the great old rums from the Caribbean region. Worth discovering but the quality-price ratio is questionable.
